I have desired to eat This Passover with you before I suffer for I say unto you I will not any more either of until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God and he took the cup and gave thanks and Said take this and divided among yourselves for I say unto you I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come And he took bread and gave thanks and break it and gave unto them saying this is my body which is given for you This do remembrance of me Likewise also the cup after supper saying this cup is the New Testament in my blood which is shed for you But behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table and truly the Son of Man Goeth as it was determined But woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed and they began to inquire among themselves which of them It was that should do this thing and there was also a strife among them Which of them should be accounted the greatest and he said unto them the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them And they that exercise authority upon them are called Benefactors and ye shall not be so but he that is greatest among you Let him be as the younger and he that is chief He that doth serve For what whether it is greater he that sitteth at meet or he that serveth is not he that sitteth at meet But I am among you as he that service ye are They which have continued with me in my temptations and I appoint you a kingdom as my father had appointed unto me that ye may eat and drink and my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel and The Lord said Simon Simon behold Satan hath desire to have you that he may sift you as sweet But I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not and when thou art converted strengthen thy brethren And he said unto him Lord I am ready to go with thee both in a prison and to death and he said I tell thee Peter that cock shall not Crow this day before thou shalt thrice deny That thou knowest me and he said unto them when I sent you without purse and scrip and shoes and lacking anything And they said nothing then said he unto them but now he that had a purse let him take it and likewise his script and he that hath no sword let him sell his garment and buy one and For I say unto you that this that is written must be yet accomplished in me and he was reckoned among the trend aggressors For the things concerning me having in and they said Lord behold here are two swords and he said unto them it is enough and he came out and went as he Want to the Mount of Olives and his disciples also followed him and when he was at the place he said unto them Pray that ye enter not into temptation and he was withdrawn from them about stones cast and kneeled down and prayed saying father if thou willing remove this cup from me nevertheless not my will but thine be done and There appeared an angel unto him from heaven strengthening him and being in an agony He prayed more earnestly and his sweat was as were great drops of blood falling down to the ground And when he rose up from the prayer, he was come to his disciples He found them sleeping for sorrow and he said unto them why sleep ye rise and pray lest he enter into temptation and while he spake while he yet spake behold a multitude and He that was called Judas one of the twelve went before them and drew near unto Jesus to kiss them But Jesus said unto them Judas betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss When they which were about him saw what would follow they said unto him Lord We smite thee with the sword and one of them smote the servant of the high priest and cut off his eat right ear and Jesus answered and said suffer ye thus far and He touched his ear and he healed him Then Jesus said unto the chief priests and captains of the temple and the elders which were come to him Be ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves When I was daily with you in the temple, he stretched forth no hands against me But this is your hour and the power of darkness Then took they him and led him and brought him into the high priest house and Peter Followed afar off and when they had killed kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were set down together Peter sat down among them but a certain man behold him as he sat by the fire and earnestly looked upon him and said this man was also with him and He denied him saying woman I know not and after a little while another saw him and said that weren't also with them and Peter said man I am NOT but and about the space of one hour another Confidently affirmed saying of a truth this fellow also was with him for he's a Galilean and Peter said man I know not what thou sayeth and immediately while he had spake the cock crew and the Lord Turned and looked upon Peter and Peter remembered the word of the Lord how he had said unto him before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice and Peter went out and wet bitterly and the men That held Jesus mocked him and smote him and when they had blindfolded him they struck him on the face and asked him saying prophesy who is it that smote thee and many other things blasphemously spake they against him and as soon as this day the elders of the people of the chief priests and scribes came together and led him into their council saying Art thou the Christ tell us and he said unto them I tell you if I tell you you will not believe me You would not believe and if I also ask you you will not answer me nor let me go Hereafter shall the Son of Man sit on the right hand of the power of God Then said they all art thou then the Son of God and he sent it to them Ye say that I am and they said what need we any further witness for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth Let us pray dear Lord. Please be with the preaching. Let us hear something from your word and Jesus now pray. Amen Amen Amen so you're there in Luke chapter 22 and as you can tell we have 71 verses to get through tonight So I don't really have a whole bunch of cross referencing when it comes to verses I'm just gonna be going through this chapter. I do have some But there's a lot to get into tonight. So Luke 22 In verse 1 here. It says now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew nigh Which is called the Passover and the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him for they feared the people So the Feast of Unleavened Bread The Feast of Unleavened Bread according to the Bible is being equated with the Passover. Okay, and When it comes to this it's important to understand this when you understand just when Jesus died when he was betrayed and all that and getting into the idea of the fact that It was called that whole week of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was called the Passover and Not just the one day that they killed the Passover but So this is a great verse to really just show you that that when we're talking about The Feast of Unleavened Bread that whole event is called the Passover. Okay now I'll show you a little more on that as far as why that's important and all that but go to Luke chapter 22 in verse 3 There it says then entered Satan into Judas Surnamed Iscariot being of the number of the twelve and he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains How he might betray him unto them and they were glad and covenant into him Covenant Covenanted to give him money and he promised and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude so basically Satan himself is entering into Judas and We definitely see there's a strong connection between Judas and The the man of sin as far as like the Antichrist and obviously Satan dealing with him So you kind of see this with the first coming of Christ and then with the second coming of Christ with the Antichrist but Satan himself is Entering into Judas and I know there's a lot of there's there's for some reason a lot of Judas sympathizers out there Even this new film out there or this new show or whatever it is called the chosen It's all about like basically trying to look at Judas Through kind of basically being sympathizing of Judas Judas. It was a horrible person He wasn't just somebody that was like a little confused and oh, you know, he just got mixed up. He chose the wrong side You know or whatever. No Judas had the bag. He was a thief Judas didn't care for the poor Judas was you know, it wasn't a devil and The Bible teaches that he was never saved because in John 664 it says but there were there are some of you that believe not for Jesus knew from the beginning who they were That believed not and who should betray him so he knew from the very beginning that Judas didn't believe he knew that Judas never believed and At least by John 6 in in the timeline of events He that Jesus is calling him a devil because it says that Jesus answered them Have not I chosen you twelve and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon for he it was that should betray him being one of the twelve And you it may seem redundant that it keeps saying he's one of the twelve and Just like being very specific about him. Notice. It's like Judas Iscariot the son of Simon one of the twelve, right because The more you know, I remember reading through the Bible to begin with and I'm just like man It just seems like okay we get it right But there's so much false doctrine out there and so many times that people will try to twist things and say other things like well That's not that Judas is a different Judas, you know, and they'll try to like somehow Just nitpick stuff and pull stuff out and it's like it's very twelve It's very clear that he's one of the twelve Judas Iscariot Son of Simon like it's very clear. Who are we talking about? It does this in the Old Testament to because it'd be talking about Moses and Aaron and it'll talk about their parents But it's that Moses and Aaron. I'm like is there some other Moses and Aaron that's out there, right? That we'd be talking about but it's the Bible is very clear to kind of to make it You know just very distinct on who we're talking about because you know If it wouldn't have said he's up to twelve they would have been like well You know that wasn't the same person that was up to twelve and there'd be some weird false doctrine out there basically surrounding that If you didn't have these details in there to keep people in check I mean there's enough false doctrine out there when they when they when there are details like this Then they still go out there and preach false doctrine You can definitely see how that could happen but Satan himself enters into Judas and if you remember You know Satan also enters into him to do Basically when we get to the Lord's Supper When it comes to him going out and actually doing the deed, but you notice that he's basically trying to get Betray him to where Jesus isn't going to be around the multitude because You notice that there's a theme in Luke where it's like they feared the people they feared the people they feared the people they feared The people so they wouldn't do anything to Jesus as long as he was around the multitudes because You know the the wicked fleet with no man pursue it too, so I mean they're obviously wicked They're trying to do something wicked and they're trying to do it in the dark and later on it's gonna say the power of darkness You know and it talks about You know basically that's they're gonna go out there in secret when no one else is around Like a bunch of cowards and that's when they're gonna take Jesus, right? so Look at Luke 22 in verse 7 It says then came the day of unleavened bread when the Passover must be killed now the thing that I want you to understand here Is that? People will somehow try to say this is like a contradiction or it's like well when was a Passover killed The thing is that the Passover is equated with the days of unleavened bread And what you have to understand you can go back to the Leviticus 23 and look at this but when the children of Israel Came up out of Egypt. It was the 14th day that night is when they killed the Passover and They put the blood on the doorpost Right and on the the lentil and then the next day that morning they went out and that was the 15th day And then they had this feast of unleavened bread, right? It's basically saying there's not gonna be any leaven in your house, but What it's stating here is that the 14th day is considered a day of unleavened bread Even that 14th day now what I believe is going on here Is that Jesus is killed the next evening, right and when you look in the book of John It's constantly saying they want to eat the Passover. So they don't want to get like the Jews want to eat the Passover So they don't want to defile themselves, right? So what's going on here? Is that the Bible doesn't explicitly tell you in in You know and you can correct me if I'm wrong on this But I've looked at all the different passages on this when it comes to it It says that on the evening of the 14th day the Passover is to be killed now what you have to understand Is that that's when the day would start and stop with them right and what's even that's when the Sun is eat Even with the horizon. Okay, that could be morning. That could be night, right? but If you remember they wanted to take them off the the they want to take them off the cross because the Sabbath grew on right It was ready to be the Sabbath. So that means that the next day Would have been you know, basically at even when they were having to get the bodies off the cross and all that stuff, right? So the next day would start at even so if you think about it, usually I mean right now actually it's more like 930 But if you were to look at like a 12-hour day and just to look at it all all things being equal Six o'clock in the morning Sun rises six o'clock in the evening Sun sets right all things being equal just for simplicity. Okay? Now we know that he obviously was on the cross from six to not, you know Like from sixth hour to ninth hour, but it depends on where you're taking that time from right? now anyway That being said is that what I believe happens here is that? When Jesus is eating the the Passover with his disciples It's the even that starts the 14th day Okay, so even it's the 14th day and it goes through the night he's betrayed that that night and then it goes on to the next portion of the day and at even at the end of the 14th day is when he he dies on the cross That makes sense. So Because what you have to understand is that? Jesus was crucified on the Passover, but he's also eating the Lord. He's eating this supper with his disciples on the Passover, right? So, how does that work? You got the even of the beginning of the 14th day he's eating The Passover with his disciples and it's actually not contradictory to what the Bible says because that even on the 14th day, right? but then when When you look at the story of Moses that's really when Jesus dies on the cross is at the end of that 14th day Going into the 15th day and the reason that the next day was a Sabbath is because that for that 15th day That next day after they kill the Passover was considered a Sabbath day They weren't to do any work. So this whole idea of like Jesus dying on a Friday is a hoax He died on a Thursday night, I believe and then that Friday was a Sabbath day But it was a special Sabbath day and actually John says this is a high day This Sabbath day was a high day meaning that it wasn't just the typical end of the week Sabbath And then the next day after that was a Sabbath as well And that means that Jesus that gives you your three days and three nights and he rose early the first day of the week Okay So that got a little deep for no reason I guess because I'm not preaching on that right now But you know things like this where it said where he quaited the Feast of Unleavened Bread with the Passover and he's eating his past He's eating the Passover on the day of Unleavened Bread. Someone's looking at me like well the Passover must be passed then, right? Because you're trying to separate those two, but the Bible actually equates them meaning the 14th day is included in the Feast of Unleavened Bread And it's also all considered the Passover Okay, so I don't put those as two different feasts. I put those as the same feast It's just that that 14th day where they're killing the Passover starts that thing off if you will so But they go to eat the Passover with the Lord and in Luke 22 and verse 8 here Luke 22 and verse 8 it says and he sent Peter and John saying go and prepare us the Passover that we may eat The thing with this is that it never says that they kill a lamb or do anything like that I'm not saying they don't okay what you have to understand is that they're still technically in the Old Testament so You know it wouldn't be out You know kind of makes sense that they were actually doing the actual Passover with the lamb and all that But what he does with the bread and and the juice after that is after they eat the Passover Okay, so it's kind of like here's the Old Testament Passover. Here's the New Testament Passover and It doesn't say it just says they eat the Passover and to me That's the Passover, right? I Tend to believe that they're actually doing the Old Testament ordinance because all the way up to this point He's saying go to the priest, you know Give your gift before the altar like it says in the law Moses right and he's customs and everything He's saying keep this keep that but obviously once he dies on the cross all of that stuff's done away now There's no more doing sacrifices or anything like that. Okay? It doesn't say specifically that they slayed a lamb or that they ate the lamb or all that but it does say they ate the Passover and If you're looking in the Bible as far as eating the Passover, that's what you're gonna find But then it goes on to talk about You know them Doing what we still recognize today, which is eating the bread and drinking the juice and everything So but keep reading there verse 9 it says and they said unto him Where wilt thou that we prepare? And he said unto them behold When ye are entered into the city There shall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water follow him into the house where he enterth in And ye shall say unto the good man of the house the master saith unto thee Where is the guest chamber where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples and he shall say he shall show you a large upper room Furnished and there make ready and they went and found as he had said unto them and they made ready the Passover Okay, so to me when you're dealing with that I think you're dealing with the actual Passover that they're actually doing You know what they were to do throughout the whole Testament when it comes to the Passover now We know that Christ is our Passover, but he hasn't been offered yet. It's literally the same day, right? so this is Basically going from the old to the new Within this feast that they're doing here and in verse 14 It says and when the hour was come he sat down and the twelve apostles with him. So Judas is there with them It's actually very evident because he's gonna basically state that one of them's a traitor But Judas is there with them. I Don't believe they sat at the table where they're all facing like one direction like in da Vinci's painting They also probably didn't look like women, you know, at least John didn't look like a woman According to that painting Jesus didn't have long hair, you know all that stuff But I know when you think of like the the Last Supper That's what you think of right Jesus in the middle and everybody just kind of like this just staring into the abyss Right because that's how we eat, you know We get on one side of the table. We just look ahead like we're at a bridal You know, like we're at a wedding banquet or something like that, you know Like we had the whole wedding party and everybody's just looking this direction. Like who do they looking at, you know Anyway, it doesn't say how they were sitting they are obviously sitting together though but Yeah, don't take the Vinci Leonardo da Vinci or any of the Ninja Turtles As being authoritative when it comes to what Jesus looked like or what they look like or how this whole event happened, okay Let me let me get Leonardo out for you Is he in here yeah, don't take this guy's opinion right here This Guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Okay. Now there's a lot of questions you have right now Why do you have a Ninja Turtle in your pulpit Well for illustrations like that you never know so but But let's keep reading here because It's it states here in verse 15 it says and he said unto them with desire I have desire to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. Okay, so he's about to go to the cross and Obviously the Passover I mean That is if you were to think about a passage in in the Old Testament or something of the Old Testament That pictures Jesus and what he's gonna do is the Passover The Passover lamb the blood all of that and obviously how God will pass over us like death passes over you the destroyer will pass over you if you had the blood applied But then it says in verse 16 for I say unto you I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God and he took the cup and gave thanks And said take this and divide it among yourselves For I say unto you I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come So, you know what people try to say? Well, you know you you Baptist over there drinking grape juice, you know Can't handle that hardly. You can't handle wine, you know, they don't say hard liquor because you know, that would seem a little nefarious Like oh you can't handle you can't handle a little wine It's like, you know, Jesus drank wine, you know at the last it's like no actually You know the the word wines used a lot in the Bible and we could all have Discussions on whether it's alcoholic or non-alcoholic and that in those contacts, but here it doesn't say wine in any of the Gospels Not one doesn't say wine. It says the fruit of the vine But yet how many people get this wrong Catholics and Then all you know, the Reformed Baptist the beer churches Just All these people that just want to drink wine. It's like it doesn't even say wine there It actually clarifies and said the fruit of the vine, you know what that is juice That's grape juice is what that is and so You know, obviously they're drinking grape juice here and It says that he took bread and gave thanks and break it and gave unto them saying this is my body Which is given for you this do in remembrance of me Likewise also the cup after after supper saying this cup is the New Testament in my blood which is shed for you So what you have to understand is that this is kind of happening after the dinner, right? So that's why I believe personally that they're probably actually eating the Passover and then at after that Which what comes after the Old Testament the New Testament right that after that he takes, you know The cup and he's basically stating that he's not gonna drink this until after you know He comes into his kingdom and all that but he breaks the bread because it's talking about you know His body was broken for us, but then also that the the fruit of the vine represents his blood the blood in the New Testament And It says in verse 21 It says behold and but behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is With me on the table and truly the son of man goeth as it was determined But woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed and they began to inquire among themselves Which of them it was that should do this thing and if this is obviously where everybody's just like is that I said I and Obviously the disciple whom Jesus loved I believe John obviously is is saying who is it, you know? and And Judas even says is that I? Right after he literally hands it because in the other Gospels it'll basically state he he said whosoever dip it You know his basically stops in my dish, right? That's who is the one that betrayed him and he literally takes it gives it to Judas When he says is it I and he gives it to him right and then he go and he says what that you know, what that'll do is do quickly right and And he goes out and then all the disciples are just like well, you know, maybe he's just going out to go Get something for the poor get something, you know for whatever right? They just clueless, right? That's how That's how much that's how much of a cloak Judas had on all the disciples That even after he's like is whoever stops in my dish, right? Whoever I give this up to right and he hands it to Judas and says what the hell do is do quickly, right? And they're just still like no idea But that should be a warning to us That there are people out there that are literally wolves in sheep's clothing You know, that's that's a the whole point is that they're in sheep's clothing There's a lot of people that are more just like wolves right, you know, typically just be like that's a wolf, right? You don't look at the Catholic Pope and be like there's a wolf in sheep's clothing He's not wearing any sheep's clothing now to the unsaved person and to the maybe the baby Christian I guess But like to the typical Christian, they're not looking at the Pope as being like authoritative or like thinking that they're actually saved So Judas obviously he betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver and He's basically going to Find a way to do that now during this time I I personally believe this is after Judas leaves That now if you're in and I think it's in John basically when Judas leaves says now is the son of man glorified It's like kind of like got rid of that dog, you know got rid of that you know devil and then it was just save people there with the Lord and and then there's this discussion about who will be the greatest in heaven and Notice that they're not saying like who's going to heaven It's got you sometimes when you look at these passages you have to really just see that they're not talking about like hey Who's gonna make it? Because that's what the world thinks right is that no one knows where they're going to heaven and you know No one could know that They're not having a discussion about like who's gonna make it or like what we need to do to keep our salvation or anything like That they're they're already on another level saying like okay who's gonna be greatest though in the kingdom of heaven You Know get into the mindset of a saved person when they're looking at this and the fact that They all know they're going to heaven. They all know they have eternal life, but the question is You know who will be the greatest? In verse and you think about John the Baptist and that whole discussion as far as being greatest in the kingdom of heaven or being least but in Luke 22 in verse 24 It says and there was also a strife among them which of them should be accounted the greatest And if you remember that in another passage you see John and James and the mother gets involved, right? And this is kind of just typical of mama's boys. I don't know. I just think of that I think about when James and John's mother steps in and just like Like kind of speaking for them like hey, you know Grant that my sons, you know, it's like they can speak for themselves You know, like it's just kind of just strikes me as that where the mom is like stepping in for the son and Kind of like that mama's mama's boy type of thing going on there But sometimes they're saying it and in this case, they're all just talking about it, right? So this is discussion that happens multiple times where they're talking about who's gonna be the greatest who's gonna be All that, you know what before I you know read this though Is that you know what the Bible says is judge nothing before the time is that we shouldn't be worried about who's gonna be the greatest and you know who's above who I mean think about it just on a level of like people in the church right now and You're just looking at everybody be like, okay this and you were like Let's rank everybody from the greatest Christian to the least in our church You realize how foolish that is? because No one in here could know that anyway Right We're not I'm not seeing what you do when you're not here at church You're not seeing what I do when I'm not here at church There's no way for you to know that Only God can know like where everybody's at when it comes to that and you know what it's better off that you don't even know that Because if if you were way up here on the scale you may say hey, I've done my I've done my job I Could just start slacking a little bit now Instead you should be thinking I don't have anything really to show for you know Like kind of just in the mindset of like I need to get to work Because who knows if I even have any rewards for me up there right now and so But notice what he says here in verse 25 It says he said unto them the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors but Ye shall not be so He that is greatest among you let him be as the younger and he that is cheap as He that doth serve for weather is greater He that sitteth at meet or he that serve it is not he that sitteth at meet But I am I am among you as he that serve it So when you think about this What most people would think is that hey you need to be in Authority in this in this life, but really if you want to be greatest in the kingdom come you need to be Servant of all right, so The more you serve now the more you'll be an authority in the next life That's what I believe is being taught here You want to be the greatest you want to have the greatest authority then serve the most now I? Mean Jesus is serving them and if you remember Also during this time that of this this supper and doing the Passover he literally washes his disciples feet So I mean The king of kings and Lord of lords is washing his disciples feet washing the feet of like fishermen and a public and you know I mean like think about that and the fact that how he had humbled himself and put him He was made and the likeness of men and he became a servant, right? and he didn't come to be ministered unto but to minister and That should be our mindset if you want to be the greatest then you have to be The servant of all right you need this you need to be You know basically humble and bring yourself low in this life in order to be great in the kingdom of heaven Obviously this has nothing to do with whether you go to heaven or not but You know that's because people are just like well if you're saved and you can't lose your salvation Then why would you ever want to do anything else? You know why would you ever want to serve the Lord? Well, maybe because I want to be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven Maybe because I want I don't want to be the lowest or the least in the kingdom of heaven That's another term for another day to really get into all the different things of how to do that But you know the Bible says that if you keep these the least of these commandments to teach other so you'll be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, but if you Basically cause those to break the least of these commandments. You'll be called the least in the kingdom of heaven, so But all those people are still going to heaven right Whether you keep the commandments or whether you don't keep the commandments you're still going to heaven But whether you keep the commandments or whether you break them will determine whether you're greatest or least And I don't know about you, but I would I personally for all eternity would like to have a high authority than Being like the doorman or the janitor right? I think the doorman and janitor will be glad that he's in heaven, right? but obviously There's rewards for those that serve him now look at verse 28 there He says ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations? And I appointed and I appoint unto you a kingdom as my father had appointed unto me That you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones Judging the 12 tribes of Israel now. I do believe that this is Personally going to be the 12 apostles basically You know reward here is that and job is to judge the 12 tribes of Israel I? Don't believe that's just for every believer because that wouldn't make any sense because who's if it's every believer then they be judging themselves When you're talking about the 12 tribes of Israel you say well judas isn't in that number. Well, that's because Matthias is so And I do believe Matthias is the 12th apostle right? I don't believe it's like I should have been paul No Matthias is the 12th apostle his name will be written on the foundations of New Jerusalem He will be judging one of the 12 tribes of Israel and now it does talk about how we'll be judging Nations, and we'll be judging angels and all that but as far as the 12 tribes of Israel go that honor will be given to the 12 apostles and Specifically because they continued with them through his temptations and even when the thighs was picked he had to be picked He had to be there from the baptism of John To where they were at okay there were stipulations on that So I believe Matthias was there through all this stuff. It wasn't just that my thighs was just like hey What are you guys doing? You know can I be one of the 12? now he was there through all that other stuff and Obviously, there's some cases where some of the 12 weren't even around when Jesus speaking I mean think about it when he the all of a discourse, right? There's only four of them there the mountain transfiguration. There was only three And a lot of cases are just the three the top three that are there So it's not like even all the twelve were there for every single event that was there So, I don't know where Matthias was during that whole time, but he was there Had to be that that that was the requirement for him to even be even worthy of that This isn't a sermon about Matthias, but I do believe that he's legit that he is the 12th apostle and he's one of those It's gonna be do it Judging 12 tribes of Israel now go to Luke chapter 22 in verse 31 We get here where where Jesus is gonna foretell some things about Peter And that's what it says in verse 31 It says the Lord said Simon Simon behold Satan hath desired to have you they may sift you as wheat But I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not and when thou art converted Strengthen thy brethren now I personally believe that this these two verses right here are dealing with after Jesus's resurrection when you're dealing with the fact that he's saying I go a-fishing Because then later on that's literally when he says feed my lambs feed my sheep feed my sheep You know love us thou me more than these But what's interesting about that is that the next thing he's gonna state here is something that's gonna happen as far as Peter denying him three times that night okay, and He denies him three times and then he has to say that he loves them three times with the other thing and so I personally believe when he's talking about Satan's trying to sift you as wheat and basically that you don't That you're not faithless That you continue right and he says when thou art converted strengthen thy brethren So he's kind of giving him a key like you're going to you're gonna you're gonna get right You know what I mean, and he's praying for him. I mean imagine that Jesus is saying I have prayed for thee And I have prayed for you imagine the Lord of Lords the King of Kings, you know, the Lord Jesus Christ saying I prayed for you. I Mean that's powerful stuff right there when you think about Just that that attention the Son of God This is praying for you by name to God the Father But you know what? We can attach all our names to that You know what? Jesus even says I say that I'll pray for you to the Father For the Father himself loveth you Right. So I mean think about how powerful that is. It's like no, this is that Jesus is stating the Father wants to give you this It's not like I have to like ask him and like really beg him to do this. The Father loves you and so But then it goes on to say in verse 33 it says and he said unto him Lord I am ready to go with thee both into prison and to death And he said I tell thee Peter the cock shall not crow this day Before that thou shalt thrice deny thou knowest me now Obviously the cocks talking about a rooster But specifically I believe it's talking about a time of day because in market we'll talk about the cocks and not crow twice till out has to deny me thrice and Both passages are right and I do believe that a rooster literally crows When he denies him the third time so don't give me don't take that out of the equation But know this is that roosters are crowing all the time. I know because I have one and Fufu the snoo is just like crowing all the time. Okay But you know what he does do he does do he does crow in the morning as well, you know at dawn or whatever but That being said is that we're dealing with the fact that it's going to be this night It's not gonna be the next day yet. It's not gonna be dawn Before you've denied me. So think about that. They're like in the night. They're having the supper anything saying It's not even gonna dawn to the next day before you've denied me thrice when you said you're gonna go to prison and you're gonna go and you're gonna die for me and Obviously we know that later on the chapter that actually happens but going on from that There's other information and the thing about this is that in Luke and in John we see other things that are going on around this Time of this this last supper if you will and John you see You know him washing his disciples feet and you see a lot of the stuff to these preaching and we think about that happens in John 13 and in John 14 15 16 and 17 are all happening before the the Garden of Gethsemane But in this passage we see something else that's stated here He kind of gives them a warning that hey things are gonna change a little bit once when Jesus dies and after the resurrection It's not gonna be the same as when he was here on the earth walking around on the earth okay, and this is important to know because Sometimes people will look at passages about when Jesus is walking around kind of like the same thing where they say well see Jesus said go take that to the priest and you know go do this according to the law of Moses and you'll have these Judaizers out there that'll be like see Jesus said do that, but that was under the Old Testament The New Testament started the moment Jesus died because the death of the testator is when the New Testament starts and Also, they'll maybe look at passages Where I'll be like well when you go into the city basically just Like you should just expect that people are gonna put you up. They're gonna feed you right you go out soul-willing It's like don't take anything with you. Don't take any food. Don't take any money You don't take any, you know extra code or anything like that and they'll be they'll say well you should do that then Right, we should go there with no money and just expect people to take care of us No in Jesus day when he was walking on the earth. Yes That's the way it was and that's what happened. And obviously Everything was taken care of with them But notice what it says here in verse 35 and he said it to them when I sent you without purse and script and shoes Lacked you anything and they said nothing So obviously that all came true when he sent him out there everything was provided for them Then said he unto them but now As he hasn't even gone to the cross yet, but he's already stating like now it's gonna be different But now he that hath a purse let him take it and likewise his script And he that hath no sword let him sell his garment and buy one for I say to you that this That is written must yet be accomplished in me and he was reckoned among the transgressors For the things concerning me have an end He's talking about going to the cross and being between the transgressors on the cross And it says and they said Lord behold here are two swords and he said unto them it is enough Now if you remember when he states this is that going out without her script or anything like that He's sending him to but to and to isn't he? He's sending them to and to both in I believe Luke 9 is the 12 and then in Luke 10 It's the 70 others and they're all being sent out to and to and then they said they have two swords, right? You know what that is a sword for each person, right? Now if you want to have two swords on each person, I think that's a good interpretation, too Is that your your dual wielding, you know now obviously the sword in our day is is a gun Hey, I Don't believe this is like saying hey go out and buy claymore and go walk in the streets like William Wallace Right. I mean, you're probably gonna get the cops called on you and people aren't gonna want to talk to you. Okay? But I do believe this is talking about we're talking about a sword we're talking about modern weaponry and modern weaponry would be like a pistol or a gun of some sort and You know that's what we're dealing with today and When people say well, you know as a Christian, you know because well, I will go out so winning and I carry and a lot of the men in here carry and sometimes We won't be completely concealed And I've had I've had people say, you know, why are you carrying? You know, don't you believe that the Lord's gonna protect you? You know, you shouldn't have to carry a sword and listen that chosen garbage show that's out there that that garbage Mormon You know LGBT loving Show that's that's supposed to be about Jesus It's basically telling you know his disciples the the so-called Jesus telling is basically tell him to throw a sword he throws his little dagger into the Into the pond or whatever that was next to him and says you won't you won't need this anymore now listen We're not fighting You know a physical battle, but he didn't say He didn't just say like hey, you know, maybe you should have a sword He says if you don't have a sword sell your garment and buy one Now listen, you know what Jesus says he says take no thought what you shall wear Or what you shall eat and drink Right because he's promising us food and raiment. So if he's saying to you If you say well, I can't afford it Listen, if you promise you food and raiment you have to sell your garment to buy a sword. He'll give you another garment That's how essential it is. Okay. Now I'm not telling people to go out there and just start carrying a gun If you don't know what you're doing, you need to prove your weapons Okay, be like David don't go to battle and don't be carrying a gun If you don't know what you're doing with it, and you can't be safe with it but When people are just like, oh you shouldn't care, you know, you're not trusting in the Lord I actually am trusting in the Lord more than that person is because I'm actually doing what he said Because He said it's specifically dealing with soul-winning, right Now again, I'm not saying that you're wicked if you don't carry a sword out soul-winning If you don't if you don't if you're not carrying when you're going out soul-winning, but I'll say this is definitely biblical And I Believe we should be prepared to defend ourselves and that's coming from the Lord Jesus right before he goes to the cross And so That's another sermon for another day there So he basically says, you know, basically sell your garment buy one they have two swords He says it is enough so you don't need to be armed to the T You don't need to have an armory necessarily, right? It's not don't go too far with it though You know, it's fun to have some things, you know But I don't think it's wrong to have more than two swords amen But That was a weak. Amen. It's not wrong to have to sort more than two swords, right? All right. There we go We're in West Virginia, aren't we? But I I know I just came back from California So don't don't don't be bringing this California and garbage back, you know or like around me where it's just like, oh, we don't need guns So in Luke chapter 22 here and verse 39 So he states this and then it says and he came out and went as as he would was want To the Mount of Olives and his disciples also followed him And when he was at the place, he said unto them pray that ye enter not into temptation now As he as he was want, you know, it's kind of like basically what's typical, right? It's just like this is a typical thing that he does he goes out to the Mount of Olives Now in Matthew for example, it says that Jesus was with them unto a place called Gethsemane here It just says unto the place at the place now it may be that that the Garden of Gethsemane is in the Mount of Olives, but it may just be like on the way to The Garden of Gethsemane, right? It's kind of like they came I mean wouldn't it be true But he said, you know as he won he went to the Mount of Olives and they came to the place It wouldn't be it wouldn't be wrong To say he came to the Mount of Olives if he had to go through that or pass that to get to the Garden of Gethsemane could also be true that the Garden of Gethsemane is on the Mount of Olives, right? Either way. It's near it It's in that direction, right? So and you say it doesn't say garden doesn't say anything like that Well in John it talks about them being in the garden so and it was so you put everything together It's near the Mount of Olives. It's the Garden of Gethsemane That's where they're at and this is where we get some interesting information About where Jesus is praying there now in other Gospels You'll see where he goes three times comes back to his disciples and each gospel has a different perspective as what's going on there Here it doesn't really kind of get into those details as far as him coming back multiple times Finding his disciples sleeping, but it focuses on something else. It focuses more on Jesus and and basically The agony that he's going through when he's praying to the Father Notice what it says in Luke 22 and verse 41 and it says and he was withdrawn From them about the stones cast kneel down and prayed saying father if thou be willing remove this cup from me nevertheless not my will but thine be done and There appeared an angel unto him from heaven strengthening him Notice this in being an agony He prayed more earnestly and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood Falling down to the ground and when he rose up from prayer and was come to his disciples He found him sleeping for sorrow and he said unto them Why sleep ye rise and pray? Lest ye enter into temptation and the next breath is basically as he's saying this they're coming So this is showing you kind of at the end of those three times But it gives you a little more information here. Is that is he was in agony? He's praying more earnestly and It says that his sweat was as it were great drops of blood Now you could look at that and say well as it were it's kind of like that But you know what there's places where it says as it were the son of man and it is the son of man, right? I saw on the cloud as it were the son of man Well, it is now some take sometimes as it works more kind of like a figurative. It's kind of like a you know Just kind of representing what you're dealing with there But you may ask yourself. Is it possible to sweat blood and it actually is I was actually looking up the medical condition on this and it's called Hema Tedrosus Which actually You know, you don't need basically a lot of these medical terms come from Greek But but Hema it comes from like Emma which is blood and I drosis is like sweat So it's literally like blood and sweat put together into the same thing. Okay, so that's where that word comes from So don't get scared with that, but it's basically It says it when you just look this up it says is a condition in which Capillary blood vessels that feed the sweat glands rupture Causing them to execute excute blood. It is it occurs under conditions of extreme physical and emotional stress So if you want to know what I believe I believe it was literally drops of blood that he was sweating I mean it happens with people today and Under those conditions, I mean doesn't that just line up perfectly with what you're dealing with there. He was in agony He's praying more earnestly. I want you to look another place that this I believe describes this This this this event. Okay, go to Hebrews chapter 5 Hebrews chapter 5 Hebrews chapter 5 7 Hebrews chapter 5 verse 7 Jesus you know when we get into we're talking about this oneness stuff out there, right and This really I mean this this passage of the Garden of Gethsemane really just debunks this oneness stuff because you have Jesus saying not my Will but thine be done This isn't just putting on a different hat Jesus has his own will It's saying not mine, but thine be done and it even says that I came down not to do mine own will But the will of him that sent me I mean It's very clear and he's pleading with the father saying if there's any other way Now ultimately, you know what the answer is. There is no other way It had to be that Jesus was the only way That the Son of God had to become one of us and that he had to be the propitiation for our sins That was the only way if there was any other way that he even says all things are possible and to be If there's any other way He says not my will but thine be done But think about this passage in Hebrew chapter 5 verse 7 It's talking about Jesus It's talking about him being after the order of Melchizedek, but it says in verse 7 who in the days of his flesh When he had offered up prayers and supplication with strong crying and tears So that definitely would describe the garden of Gethsemane, right? Notice this it says unto him that was able to save him from death was heard and that he feared Though he were a son yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered And being made perfect he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him called of God and high priest after the order of Melchizedek Now let me answer something That actually I'm always like I'm always like bragging on Steven Crowder But I just need to stop watching him when he is ever talking about anything considering the Bible But he's talking about how he believes that Jesus was afraid And he thinks that Jesus was afraid when it came to Going to the cross and stuff like that, okay It says in that he feared But who did he fear? Was it man or was it God? And here here's what you got to think about Jesus despised the shame of going to the cross He despised you know, it's not like he enjoyed getting spit on and being mocked and being crucified But you know what? I believe He was sweating great drops of blood for Is being made sin for us When he's on the cross saying my god my god why hast thou forsaken me when his soul was in hell for three days and three nights and his soul's made an offering for sin and Out of the belly of hell cried I and the earth with her bars was about me forever Dealing with Jesus soul, you know what he was about to do There was darkness on the earth of three hours while he's on the cross When he's on the cross and I believe it says he who his own self bear our sins and his own body on the tree That when that that's what he's thinking about. He's thinking about the wrath of God Almighty being on him That he had laid on him the iniquity of us all Yes, man bruised him yes, man beat him Yes, that was horrible and that was all on top of what he what God the Father put on him So when Jesus was sweating great drops of blood It's not that I don't believe is because well what man was gonna do to me tomorrow, right? Because of getting beat or being crucified or anything like that I believe it was about what he had to accomplish to pay for our sins as far as What God God the Father was gonna put on him? The wrath of God was put on him that he paid an eternity of hell for every single person That ever lived or ever would live Think about that when he's in the Garden of Gethsemane when he's saying not my will but thine be done and And the love that that Jesus had for and still has for us So don't make a mistake Jesus was not afraid of man He's not afraid listen if he's telling you not to fear him that is able to kill the body Then he obviously wasn't afraid of those that could kill the body he's the Son of God He was not afraid of what man could do on him He's not afraid what flesh can do unto him, but you know who he was afraid of God the Father because that's godly fear And so it is true that Jesus fear, but he feared God the Father and the agony and The stress and the emotional stress and that turned into physical stress It's just another layer of what our Savior went through to pay for our sins and You know obviously Sometimes we need to think about just how much he loved us now in Luke chapter 22 This is where Judas comes up Judas comes and comes to betray him in verse 47 says and while he yet spake behold a multitude and He that was called Judas one of the twelve went before them and Drew near unto Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said unto him Judas betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss now I have to eat crow because at one point I said that There wasn't a place where he was called Judas by name By Jesus, but there's one place where he's called Judas by name, and it's right here now There's other plate the other place where he's talking to him. He says friend Betrayest thou the Son of Man with the kids you know it says Jesus said unto him friend Wherefore art thou come then came they and laid hands on on Jesus and took him You say why is he calling him friend? well There's a prophecy that's mentioned in the New Testament, but it's in it's in Psalm 41 in verse 9 It says yea my own familiar friend and whom I trusted which did eat of my bread had lifted up his heel against me So What you're dealing with there is that remember he says to his disciples I call you no more servants, but friends I Mean you're talking about the inner twelve right the inner twelve apostles Judas was supposed to be a friend and He betrayed him He didn't just get betrayed by you know the Pharisees Obviously they don't like him But Judas is the traitor. That's what he's called. It's called the traitor and from the very you know from the very beginning we read through the gospel is like Judas which betrayed him the traitor and Don't have sympathy for Judas Judas had I believe had an opportunity to believe and he rejected it, and he was hardened just like Pharaoh and He became a devil But go to Luke chapter 22 and verse 49 Because this chapter is long so we got to keep going here I refuse to do two partners tonight Verse 49 here They're obviously they're coming to take Jesus and it says when they were and when they which were about him saw What Would follow they said unto him Lord shall we smite with the sword and one of them smoked the servant of the high priest And cut off his right ear and Jesus answered and said suffer ye thus far and he touched his ear and healed him Then Jesus said unto the chief priests and captains of the temple and the elders which were come to him Be ye come out as against the thief with swords and staves when I was daily with you in the temple He stretched forth no hands against me But this is your hour and the power of darkness notice that that that you may have that cloak of darkness They could do all this wickedness and darkness and get away with it But do you know who smote off this high priest the servant of the high priest's ear? Peter Remember that he just told Jesus. He's like I'll go to prison. I'll die for you. So he kind of starts off strong It's not like he just runs away immediately. I mean, he's literally like ready to go ready to throw down and And Simon Peter's the one that drew the sword and Bible trivia. Do you know who the person who the high priest named the servant the high priest? Malchus so So when you when you look at this Peter's kind of like, oh, okay, you know, he's and Jesus basically says, you know put put the sword back in the chief, right? And in other places, they'll say, you know Basically that he could send the God the Father can send legions of angels that protect him right now But then everything wouldn't be fulfilled So they all they all scatter after that all his disciples scatter But in verse 54 here This is where Peter's gonna come and he follows he follows Jesus they take Jesus and he follows them and he's basically outside of where they're doing this whole like kangaroo trial if you will In verse 54 here says then they took him I'm sorry then took they him and led him and brought him into the high priest house and Peter followed afar off and when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were set down together Peter sat down among them but a certain maid Beheld him as he sat by the fire and earnestly looked upon him and said this man was also with him And he denied him saying woman I know him not so he's afraid of a little girl that well, I guess she's a woman technically right, but this maid that comes up to to him and he says I know I'm not so number one denial It says in verse 58 and said after a little while another saw him and said thou art also of them And Peter said man, I am NOT Verse 59 and about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed saying of of a truth this fellow also was with him for he's a Galilean and Peter said man, I know not what thou sayest and immediately while he yet spake the cock crew Now That's kind of a typical storyline that's going on You know that you'll see any other Gospels but this next verse is probably one of those chilling things that to think about here In verse 61 he's in proximity They're right there where he's being judged and apparently they can see each other Because it says in verse 61 and the Lord turned and looked upon Peter Think about that for a second That he denied him that third time the cock crows And then Jesus looks up at him I Mean just a shame that obviously I'm sure Jesus was disappointed although he knew it was gonna happen But it's like his friend, you know Peter's his friend and Now when you think about that Aspect of it it says and Peter remembered the word of the Lord How he had said unto him before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice and Peter went out and wept bitterly Okay, he didn't just weep he wept bitterly. I mean think about that He denied his Savior. He denied his friend. He denied him three times just like he said he would and The third time when that cock crows he looks up at him. I Mean I can't imagine That shame but you know what we need to be thinking about that when we think about denying our Savior Listen he can see us Think about him looking at you right in those in those times of trials and tribulations Just think about your Savior staring at you and listen you say well, is he there looking at you? Well, he's standing at the right hand of God the father when Stephen was stoned Yes, I do believe that Jesus is there watching you when you're going through those tribulations and trials But if you deny him, I mean think about think about that situation with Peter and I'm not giving it any you know Justice as far as The way they should be preached because when I read this it's just like it just sends chills down my spine when I'm reading this It's just like oh That would be painful Just that that amount of shame and just disgust with yourself Like what have I done? How could I do that? And then Jesus is continued to be mocked so I mean think about this he's betrayed by Judas who's supposed to be a friend and Then Peter denies him three times while he's being on this kangaroo court And then he's just being mocked and then he just continued to be mocked and notice what it says in verse 63 It says and the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him and when they had blindfolded him They struck him on the face and asked him saying prophesy. Who is it that smoked thee and many other things? blasphemously spake they against him Now Jesus didn't enjoy this stuff obviously it says that You know, he endured such contradiction of sinners and he despised the shame Though he actually hated it He hated the shame and all this stuff that's being put upon him But he did it because he loved us and he saw the hope that was set before him and Obviously he knew what he had to do now in verse 66 here to end the chapter they're questioning him and No, so it says in verse 66 and as as soon as it was day the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together and let him into their counsel saying Art thou the Christ tell us and he said unto them if I tell you you will not believe and if I also Ask you you will not answer me nor. Let me go which is the truth I mean, it doesn't really matter what he says because they're gonna get some reason like it's a kangaroo court It's just it there there it doesn't they don't care about truth in Verse 69 says here hereafter, but Jesus answers him here says and hereafter shall the Son of Man sit on the right hand of the power of God Now what you have to understand here is that that's a strong statement because he's saying the Son of Man is Sitting at the right hand of the power of God he's stating that a man is gonna be seated at the right hand of God the Father and They don't understand that Listen by the way the Jews still don't understand this That God is a hundred percent man hundred percent God that he's the root and the offspring of David They didn't understand that that's why the one of the last thing he says to the Pharisees in the public is the fact that You know, how is David? How is Christ David's son if he in the spirit calls him Lord? right If Christ is the son of David, then why would how could David why would David call his son Lord? Because he's the root and offspring of David because he's the Son of God and the Son of Man and so he's he's stating a statement that they are obviously just Not getting and they they think they obviously think it's blasphemous that they're stating it but even today You know the Jews don't understand The idea of God becoming a man great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh and In verse 70 there and said and he said and he said then said they all art thou then the Son of God And he said unto them Ye say that I am And they said what need we any further witness for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth now And in Mark it says I am he literally just says I am This is a different statement though, okay, I don't believe it's just the same statement. It's just said differently. I Believe what he's saying is that I am but you also say that I am Because he's basically saying like everything that you know about the Christ and what you're saying and what your scribes say and what everybody and what? The law says and everything you're saying is saying that I'm the Christ, you know that that's what Jesus saying to him Like you say that I am Then now they don't admit that Right but what he's saying is that Everything that you that you're saying of who the Christ is. That's that's Jesus. And so he's basically putting it on them like You know, it's uh, obviously making them angry It's kind of like if you're in an argument with somebody and then you and you disagree with me on something and I'm just like well You say that I'm right Do you see how that would make you angry you see now But if you were saying like all the things that affirm what I'm saying, right? And I'm just like you're saying what? What I'm saying, right? And you know, you can see how they'd be like just renting their garbage We're not saying that and so You know, obviously they're wicked and they're all burning in hell right now But We're gonna be getting into Luke 23 next week Lord willing into the crucifixion and And I love the book of Luke there's just so many unique stories and different perspectives in Luke that you don't see any other Gospels and just different things that maybe you didn't notice maybe you have noticed but But definitely Jesus looking at Peter when he denies him that third time That's strong Jesus sweating great drops of blood That's strong. Right? That's some that's some detail there to just kind of get you like if you were there. What were you seeing? And so let's end with a word of prayer. Dear Heavenly Father we thank you for today. Thank you for your word Thank you for the book of Luke and Lord just pray that you to help us to Appreciate what you've done for us and Lord.
