I've definitely considered that as a possibility. 39:23.000 --> 39:26.900 But, you know, this evening I really just want to focus in on what the Bible says 39:26.900 --> 39:29.600 and what the justifications were from the American Revolution, 39:29.600 --> 39:31.800 what they believed were their justifications. 39:31.800 --> 39:35.800 Of course, we can then make our own interpretation of the facts and say, 39:35.800 --> 39:38.400 hey, what do I personally believe about that? 39:38.400 --> 39:42.400 But, you know, I'm going to basically side with, you know, in my opinion, 39:42.400 --> 39:44.600 that mostly what they were doing seemed right. 39:45.000 --> 39:48.100 and some of the principles that the Bible lays out 39:48.100 --> 39:49.600 and what their justifications were. 39:49.600 --> 39:52.200 Now, we kind of have hindsight as well 39:52.200 --> 39:54.400 to look at how things went. 39:54.400 --> 39:56.960 And we can see that America as a nation 39:56.960 --> 40:00.360 seemed pretty blessed post the American Revolution 40:00.360 --> 40:02.800 and that God has used the American Revolution 40:02.800 --> 40:06.600 to create a Christian nation and a lot of Christianity 40:06.600 --> 40:09.160 and a lot of missionaries and a lot of prosperity. 40:09.160 --> 40:11.160 And while we don't necessarily judge everything 40:11.160 --> 40:13.000 by circumstance or by prosperity. 40:13.000 --> 40:15.240 It's definitely something to at least consider. 40:15.600 --> 40:19.440 and it's something to think about and if we look at a conflict between Britain 40:19.440 --> 40:23.120 and America and we see one nation becoming more Christian 40:23.120 --> 40:27.040 and another nation becoming less Christian, one nation becoming more blessed 40:27.040 --> 40:31.360 and another nation becoming less blessed over time, well we at least should consider 40:31.360 --> 40:36.080 those circumstances and consider those as factors as to how God perceives things. 40:37.040 --> 40:42.640 Obviously, you know, when we talk about, you know, these situations as a nation, 40:42.640 --> 40:43.600 There's not something in 40:43.600 --> 40:48.720 the Bible that directly says submit to Britain or submit to a king or to break away. 40:48.720 --> 40:52.560 So we have to basically just take principles in the Bible and try to apply them the best 40:52.560 --> 40:53.560 as we understand them. 40:53.560 --> 40:58.840 Now here in Romans 13 the Bible is very clear that there is a hierarchical structure to 40:58.840 --> 41:02.040 power and authority on this earth. 41:02.040 --> 41:03.840 And that authority stems from God. 41:04.200 --> 41:08.280 that all power and authority ultimately goes up to the Lord and that He is the 41:08.280 --> 41:09.280 ultimate judge, 41:09.280 --> 41:13.400 the ultimate ruler, the ultimate God. He's the God of God, the King of Kings, the Lord of 41:13.400 --> 41:14.040 Lords, 41:14.040 --> 41:18.240 and that we are to appeal to the higher power in all cases. 41:18.240 --> 41:22.440 It says here in verse 1, let every soul be subject under the higher powers 41:22.440 --> 41:26.680 for there is no power but of God. The powers that be 41:26.680 --> 41:30.440 are ordained of God. So in some ways it seems like God 41:30.440 --> 41:32.140 is giving a- 41:32.200 --> 41:37.200 authority to every power that exists as a kind of a carte blanche idea. 41:37.200 --> 41:42.600 It's just kind of a general principle, meaning that whoever's in charge in this world, it's 41:42.600 --> 41:45.520 kind of like God saying, well, I'm letting this person be in charge. 41:45.900 --> 41:53.100 Now, does that mean that God is endorsing every bad leader that's ever existed and every bad decision they've ever made? 41:53.100 --> 41:54.500 No, I don't believe that. 41:54.500 --> 42:01.100 And obviously the Antichrist will be in power one day, but God's allowing the Antichrist to be in power at least, at the minimum. 42:01.100 --> 42:01.700 Okay. 42:01.700 --> 42:04.100 Now, do we have to obey an Antichrist? 42:04.100 --> 42:07.600 Do we have to obey a Chinese tyrant dictator? 42:07.600 --> 42:11.800 Do we have to obey some North Korean dictator and do everything that they say? 42:11.800 --> 42:13.800 No, the Bible teaches that we're supposed to appeal to... 42:13.900 --> 42:20.200 the higher power. So even if you have an earthly authority that is a legitimate authority, 42:20.200 --> 42:24.380 that does not mean you always obey every single thing that they say or do. We have a higher 42:24.380 --> 42:29.740 authority and we appeal to that which is higher. So if there's an earthly authority higher 42:29.740 --> 42:35.420 than another earthly authority, we obey that one. So you have maybe a cop, local law enforcement, 42:35.420 --> 42:38.300 that's an authority. We're supposed to obey them, generally speaking. 42:38.600 --> 42:47.100 Then you have above them their sergeant or you have their captain or you have the chief of police or then you have potentially depends on what state and what city and all the different circumstances. 42:47.100 --> 42:54.600 You may have other municipalities. You may have mayors. You may have governors. You may have the district attorney. 42:54.600 --> 42:57.600 Then you have, you know, in America beyond state. 42:57.800 --> 43:04.600 powers and authorities. You have federal authorities. You could have Supreme Courts. You could have presidents. You could have all kinds of other governing bodies. 43:05.000 --> 43:12.840 Technically in America, in theory, the Constitution is kind of like the highest of the law of the land that we should abide by and listen to. 43:12.920 --> 43:18.800 But even above that, as a Christian, we're supposed to go above the Constitution, even to God himself, 43:18.960 --> 43:24.120 and we're supposed to obey God the Father as the highest authority. So no matter what 43:24.600 --> 43:25.800 authorities exist on the 43:25.800 --> 43:29.760 this earth, they're supposed to be subject to anything that's above them. 43:29.760 --> 43:30.920 And notice we're supposed to be subject. 43:30.920 --> 43:33.960 Let every soul be subject under the higher powers. 43:33.960 --> 43:37.520 So you know, you children, you obey mom. 43:37.520 --> 43:40.000 She's your, you just submit yourself to mom. 43:40.000 --> 43:44.120 But here's the thing, technically if there's a conflict between mom and dad, you obey dad. 43:45.000 --> 43:48.800 And then it's like, hey, if there's powers and authorities above your parents, 43:48.800 --> 43:52.100 then you obey the power authority above your parents. 43:52.100 --> 43:56.000 If you get married, you know, as a young lady, you obey mom and dad. 43:56.000 --> 43:57.100 But let me tell you something. 43:57.100 --> 44:00.600 If you get married, your husband is now a higher power than your dad. 44:00.900 --> 44:05.300 He goes above your dad, he replaces your dad in that hierarchical structure and you obey 44:05.300 --> 44:07.700 your husband over you would obey your father. 44:07.700 --> 44:10.460 And so there's going to be all kinds of different scenarios. 44:10.460 --> 44:16.660 So from an American perspective, you know, if we go back to 1776, you know, they are 44:16.660 --> 44:17.700 under British rule. 44:18.100 --> 44:20.900 and they have a monarchy, they have a parliament, 44:20.900 --> 44:22.500 and they have other things that are going on with their government, 44:22.500 --> 44:24.300 but generally speaking, they have a king, 44:24.300 --> 44:25.900 and they're supposed to obey that king, 44:25.900 --> 44:27.900 they're supposed to be subject under that king. 44:27.900 --> 44:30.700 But here's the thing, the king is not the final stop 44:30.700 --> 44:33.900 for every single person, it's God. 44:33.900 --> 44:36.500 God still goes above a king. 44:36.700 --> 44:40.100 And so, we're supposed to obey the powers that be, generally speaking. 44:40.100 --> 44:41.100 We're supposed to obey the king. 44:41.100 --> 44:43.820 If we had a king, we're supposed to obey him. 44:43.820 --> 44:49.780 But not ultimately, if there's a conflict with him and God's Word, then we should appeal 44:49.780 --> 44:51.540 to the higher power, which would be God. 44:51.540 --> 44:53.940 This is a principle that we're learning in Romans 13. 44:53.940 --> 44:54.700 He says in verse 2, 44:54.700 --> 44:58.380 "...who soever therefore resisted the power, resisted the ordinance of God, and they that 44:58.380 --> 45:00.100 resist shall receive to themselves damnation." 45:00.100 --> 45:03.100 So it's like God's basically saying, hey, if you resist the legitimate authorities, 45:03.100 --> 45:04.300 it can lead to your ultimate death. 45:04.700 --> 45:06.100 to a consequence of death. 45:06.100 --> 45:07.860 And of course, historically speaking, 45:07.860 --> 45:10.940 you go against the king, it's usually off with his head. 45:10.940 --> 45:12.620 And we see a lot of different rebellions. 45:12.620 --> 45:16.180 We see a lot of different people that are traitors or treasonous 45:16.180 --> 45:18.740 against their political situation. 45:18.740 --> 45:21.020 And they do die as a result of being 45:21.020 --> 45:24.100 against that legitimate power, that legitimate authority. 45:24.500 --> 45:28.340 said, verse 3, for rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. 45:28.340 --> 45:30.100 Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? 45:30.100 --> 45:32.500 Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same. 45:32.500 --> 45:34.500 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. 45:34.500 --> 45:37.380 But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the sword in vain. 45:37.380 --> 45:41.540 For he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 45:41.540 --> 45:46.580 So again, the Bible's saying governments are ordained of God and their legitimate authorities 45:46.580 --> 45:48.100 to punish evildoers. 45:48.100 --> 45:52.340 And as long as they're doing such a thing, there's really no reason why you should ever 45:52.500 --> 45:54.500 never not be subject to them. 45:54.500 --> 45:59.500 Okay, there would be no reason not to be subject to them as they're punishing evil doers. 45:59.500 --> 46:03.500 And again, you know, generally speaking, governments are doing this. 46:03.500 --> 46:05.500 Generally speaking, I get there's exceptions. 46:05.500 --> 46:07.500 I get there's bad people. 46:07.500 --> 46:09.500 I get that there's corruption in our government. 46:09.500 --> 46:15.500 But can't we honestly be honest that if someone goes out and shoots somebody in America, 46:15.500 --> 46:17.500 cops will be called and cops will have to deal with that situation? 46:18.100 --> 46:20.900 And you know, I'm glad that I don't have to deal with that situation. 46:20.900 --> 46:22.900 I'm glad that we're not calling you and saying, 46:22.900 --> 46:24.500 hey, there was a murder down the street. 46:24.500 --> 46:25.900 Let's go deal with it. 46:25.900 --> 46:29.300 Like, I kind of appreciate that there's somebody else dealing with that situation. 46:29.300 --> 46:34.000 That they're dealing with the general rapists and drug dealers and a lot of the evil. 46:34.000 --> 46:36.500 Now again, are they doing an awesome job? 46:36.500 --> 46:38.700 Are they catching all of the criminals? 46:38.700 --> 46:41.300 Is there, is there, when they catch them, 46:41.300 --> 46:44.800 is our judges always giving a biblical punishment? 46:44.800 --> 46:45.300 No. 46:45.300 --> 46:46.060 Obviously there's pro- 46:46.100 --> 46:50.800 But generally speaking, you know, our government's the one dealing with the nasty, gross people of this world. 46:50.800 --> 46:53.000 They're the ones having to deal with a lot of the problems. 46:53.000 --> 46:59.500 Now again, do they allow cartels and drug traffickers and people that they like to still kind of do their thing? 46:59.500 --> 47:01.600 And yes, I get that there's corruption. 47:01.600 --> 47:03.100 Nobody's denying corruption. 47:03.100 --> 47:10.600 But we also have to admit that there are legitimate police officers and FBI and whatever that are dealing with some really bad people. 47:10.600 --> 47:12.400 And I don't want to have to deal with them. 47:12.400 --> 47:14.000 And so you know what? We can't just... 47:14.100 --> 47:19.300 completely throw out all of the good that they're doing just because of all the bad 47:19.300 --> 47:21.300 that's also going alongside of it. 47:21.300 --> 47:25.700 But you know, you call the cops basically when someone's killing somebody or it's really 47:25.700 --> 47:26.700 extreme, you know. 47:26.700 --> 47:30.540 We don't want to get them involved in petty, minor disputes or whatever. 47:30.540 --> 47:34.140 We get them involved when someone needs to die, basically. 47:34.140 --> 47:37.100 And again, that's kind of what the Bible's saying, like, hey, these guys are there to 47:37.100 --> 47:41.200 be your avenger and to basically punish people that are worthy of death, and they should 47:41.200 --> 47:41.700 be doing that. 47:42.100 --> 47:45.520 We should have the death penalty for murderers and rapists and child molesters and all this 47:45.520 --> 47:46.520 kind of stuff. 47:46.520 --> 47:49.020 They should be punishing these people. 47:49.020 --> 47:53.260 So again, appeal to the king because he's punishing evil people. 47:53.260 --> 47:56.080 What happens if he's not punishing evil people? 47:56.080 --> 47:57.980 What if he's endorsing the evil people? 47:57.980 --> 47:59.740 What if he's sickening the evil people on you? 48:00.200 --> 48:04.900 But then you have to ask this question, like, do I still have to obey or do I appeal to the higher power? 48:04.900 --> 48:08.400 And we'll get to that question in a moment. Go to Acts chapter 4, go to Acts chapter 4. 48:08.400 --> 48:14.300 We're going to see in the New Testament a conflict of obeying the higher power and obeying the Word of God. 48:14.300 --> 48:17.700 Now, I think, you know, when we're going to look at this example, 48:17.700 --> 48:25.700 it's easier to look at the example we're going to say and say this was a clear object or a clear situation where you would just rebel. 48:25.900 --> 48:30.260 You know, if it's the Christian doctrine or if it's preaching the gospel, well then we 48:30.260 --> 48:31.260 shouldn't obey. 48:31.260 --> 48:32.260 And that's what the Bible teaches. 48:32.260 --> 48:34.020 Look at Acts chapter 4 verse 14. 48:34.020 --> 48:38.140 And beholding a man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against 48:38.140 --> 48:39.140 it. 48:39.140 --> 48:41.580 But when they commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 48:41.580 --> 48:44.460 saying, What shall we do to these men? 48:44.460 --> 48:47.820 For that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them, is manifest to all them that 48:47.820 --> 48:49.540 dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 48:49.900 --> 48:54.140 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straightly threaten them, that they 48:54.140 --> 48:58.440 speak henceforth to no man in this name. 48:58.440 --> 49:02.700 And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of 49:02.700 --> 49:03.380 Jesus. 49:03.700 --> 49:05.640 But Peter and John answered and said to them, 49:05.640 --> 49:09.100 whether we write in the sight of God to hearken unto you more 49:09.100 --> 49:10.300 than unto God, judge ye. 49:10.300 --> 49:12.420 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen 49:12.420 --> 49:12.700 and heard." 49:12.700 --> 49:14.780 He says, hey, why don't you just figure this out? 49:14.780 --> 49:17.580 If God told me to do something and you're contradicting it, 49:17.580 --> 49:18.900 who do you think I should obey? 49:19.500 --> 49:23.760 And the answer is a rhetorical question, a rhetorical statement of it should obviously 49:23.760 --> 49:25.920 be that we should obey God rather than men. 49:25.920 --> 49:30.440 And I think for most of us we could at least admit, hey, if they're telling us not to preach 49:30.440 --> 49:36.920 the Bible or to denounce Jesus Christ or to go against our Christian faith, then we are 49:36.920 --> 49:41.500 to take a stand and we are to stand for the Lord Jesus Christ and to preach the gospel 49:41.500 --> 49:44.040 and to obey God rather than men. 49:44.040 --> 49:46.500 And that is a biblical principle. 49:46.500 --> 49:47.500 How far does this stretch? 49:47.500 --> 49:51.880 You know, look at chapter 5 and look at verse 27. 49:51.880 --> 49:55.060 Acts chapter 5 verse 27, and when they brought them, they set them before the council and 49:55.060 --> 49:59.220 the high priest asked them, saying, Do we not straightly command you that you should 49:59.220 --> 50:01.220 not teach in this name? 50:01.600 --> 50:04.640 And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine and tend to bring this man's 50:04.640 --> 50:06.560 blood upon us. 50:06.560 --> 50:11.320 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than 50:11.320 --> 50:12.320 men. 50:12.320 --> 50:13.320 So here's just a clear statement. 50:13.320 --> 50:17.280 The first time they kind of give a rhetorical question, which should be obvious. 50:17.600 --> 50:22.040 Second time, after they've done, after they've actually disobeyed the order, they've gone 50:22.040 --> 50:27.080 against the governmental command, their legitimate authorities command, and they have preached 50:27.080 --> 50:31.560 Jesus, when told not to preach in Jesus' name, they did it anyways, and not only did 50:31.560 --> 50:36.320 they do it, they filled all of Jerusalem up with that doctrine, and they said, hey, we're 50:36.320 --> 50:38.640 going to obey God rather than men. 50:38.640 --> 50:39.400 Do what you want to do. 50:39.900 --> 50:44.140 And of course then they, afraid of killing them because of the uprising that would happen 50:44.140 --> 50:47.460 amongst the people, they basically just beat them and send them away. 50:47.460 --> 50:52.180 Now they go home rejoicing for having suffered for the cause of Christ and suffered for the 50:52.180 --> 50:53.180 Lord Jesus Christ. 50:53.180 --> 50:55.740 So here's a clear example of where we ought to obey God rather than men. 50:55.740 --> 50:59.900 And I think this principle would then apply in many circumstances. 50:59.900 --> 51:02.780 You know, if a wife is... 51:03.100 --> 51:08.300 Having to choose between going to church or not going to church because her husband doesn't want to go to church 51:08.300 --> 51:10.300 I think she should just go to church 51:10.540 --> 51:15.920 Okay, and you know if it's if a husband is asking his wife to commit sin 51:16.900 --> 51:20.340 You know, like, hey, let's lie to the Holy Ghost. 51:20.340 --> 51:24.020 You know, I don't think that Sapphira should have lied under the Holy Ghost. 51:24.020 --> 51:27.300 She should have not done what her husband Ananias had done. 51:27.300 --> 51:32.420 She should have said, hey, Ananias and I, we didn't, we didn't sell the land for this much. 51:32.420 --> 51:35.620 We actually sold it for more. We've kept that part of the price. 51:35.620 --> 51:39.060 Please forgive me. Maybe she wouldn't have suffered a consequence. 51:39.060 --> 51:42.980 But I've even heard, and I haven't heard with my own ears, I've just heard people tell me, 51:42.980 --> 51:44.740 there's been preachers that got up and said, 51:44.900 --> 51:49.980 that what she did was right by lying and just doing what her husband had told her to do. 51:49.980 --> 51:52.580 And you know what? That's weird, okay? 51:53.000 --> 51:56.400 I don't believe in that. I don't agree with that whatsoever. 51:56.400 --> 52:01.900 And, you know, I've even heard people tell me that they signed up for marriage counseling from a Baptist church, 52:01.900 --> 52:06.100 and the marriage counseling document literally says in it, 52:06.100 --> 52:11.200 you have to obey your husband in everything, even if he asks you to sin, you have to do that. 52:11.200 --> 52:15.900 And at least, praise God, they walked away and said, we're not getting married by this guy. 52:15.900 --> 52:19.700 Okay. You know you can walk away, all right? He can leave, okay? 52:20.100 --> 52:24.300 But here's the thing, like, I wouldn't want a wife that believes that. 52:24.300 --> 52:25.600 That's weird, okay? 52:25.600 --> 52:28.700 I want my wife to love Jesus, okay? 52:28.700 --> 52:32.100 My wife's first loyalty should be the Lord Jesus Christ and not to me. 52:32.100 --> 52:36.100 And here's the thing, if she's loyal to Jesus, then I think she's going to be a great wife. 52:36.100 --> 52:39.300 You know, she's loyal to you, you know, that's weird. 52:39.300 --> 52:41.100 How is she going to be more loyal to you than God? 52:41.500 --> 52:44.700 Okay, so if she's claiming that she's gonna be more loyal to you than God, 52:44.700 --> 52:47.700 she's not being honest, then she actually won't be. Okay. 52:47.700 --> 52:51.700 The person that's actually appealing to God is gonna be the best Christian husband or wife, 52:51.700 --> 52:56.500 and so we should always put our first loyalty to God and not our spouse. Okay. 52:56.500 --> 53:00.100 If you want to make it second, go for it. But you should, and I agree with that, 53:00.100 --> 53:04.100 but I'm not saying that you should ever sin against God. 53:04.100 --> 53:08.700 We should obey God rather than men, no matter what authority that we have. Okay. 53:09.800 --> 53:15.200 So, here's the thing, when the framers of our Constitution and when the Americans decided 53:15.200 --> 53:18.080 to rebel against Britain, what did they do? 53:18.080 --> 53:24.020 Well, in the Declaration of Independence, they quote, are appealing to the supreme judge 53:24.020 --> 53:27.520 of the world for the rectitude of our intentions. 53:27.520 --> 53:31.560 So number one point that I have this evening is about what the American Revolution did, 53:31.560 --> 53:33.920 is they appealed to God in their decision making. 53:34.400 --> 53:38.400 They did not say, we're rebelling because we don't like the King of England. 53:38.400 --> 53:39.900 They didn't say, you're a cult leader. 53:40.200 --> 53:43.400 They didn't say, oh, you're just mean and I don't like you. 53:43.400 --> 53:47.000 They said, hey, we're appealing to the supreme judge of the world. 53:47.000 --> 53:51.400 We're asking God to judge our actions as if they're right or not. 53:51.400 --> 53:54.600 Just like I would assume that you see here in Peter and them, they're saying, hey, 53:55.560 --> 53:58.200 let's judge. Should I obey God or man? 53:58.200 --> 54:00.680 And guess what? I'm going to appeal to God here. 54:00.680 --> 54:03.720 A wife saying, hey, husband, I will do everything you say, 54:03.720 --> 54:07.080 but ultimately I'm going to do what God wants me to do first. 54:07.080 --> 54:08.200 and I'm gonna obey God for. 54:08.200 --> 54:12.940 And I'm going to appeal to God to be my justifier in my action here because I want to appeal 54:12.940 --> 54:13.940 to Him. 54:13.940 --> 54:15.780 So they appeal to God. 54:15.780 --> 54:19.500 Number two, in their declaration of allegiance, they say, quote, with a firm reliance on the 54:19.500 --> 54:21.660 protection of divine providence. 54:21.660 --> 54:25.260 So say, we're appealing to the Supreme Judge. 54:25.700 --> 54:33.140 to judge our situation and we're putting our protection, our lives, our winning this particular 54:33.140 --> 54:39.700 conflict in His hands that He be the one that protect us from whatever evils are the fallout 54:39.700 --> 54:40.900 of this conquest. 54:40.900 --> 54:45.220 You know, if someone's appealing to God to protect them, you know, it's kind of weird 54:45.220 --> 54:49.700 for them to be protected and then to just not appeal or say that, hey, God had a hand 54:49.700 --> 54:50.200 in that. 54:50.400 --> 54:54.240 Right, if you're appealing to the God of the Bible to protect you and then you're protected, 54:54.240 --> 54:57.580 you would kind of think like, hey, maybe the God of the Bible approved of that and the 54:57.580 --> 54:59.360 God of the Bible did protect them. 54:59.360 --> 55:06.540 But they for sure appealed to the God of the Bible as their justification for what they 55:06.540 --> 55:07.540 were doing. 55:07.540 --> 55:10.460 Okay, so they were not saying, I'm going to go against God. 55:11.000 --> 55:16.000 Now, you go to the Museum of the American Revolution, which I went to in Philadelphia. 55:16.000 --> 55:24.000 Cool museum, lots of interesting artifacts, all kinds of historical things that you can look at, see. 55:24.000 --> 55:30.000 You got to get towards the end of this particular museum exhibit, and they have this like sodomite flag. 55:30.000 --> 55:36.000 And they're like, oh, this inspired, you know, this sodomite revolution in the 60s. 55:36.000 --> 55:37.400 Here's the thing. 55:37.800 --> 55:40.040 This is not the same as the American Revolution. 55:40.040 --> 55:41.000 You know why?
