We pray amen 00:11.100 --> 00:17.180 Okay, we are in Genesis chapter 37 from here on out up until Genesis chapter 50 00:17.580 --> 00:23.100 The focus really shifts to just being all about joseph and so from chapter 37 to 50 00:23.420 --> 00:28.780 It's basically the chronicles of joseph with the exception of chapter 37 00:29.180 --> 00:34.860 That really focuses on that weird story with juda. Okay, if you've read through genesis, you know what i'm talking about 00:34.860 --> 00:37.500 We'll we'll deal with that later. I'm sorry chapter 38 00:38.220 --> 00:39.100 Where it talks about? 00:39.100 --> 00:42.380 Judah and Onan and Ur and so forth. 00:42.380 --> 00:44.520 And one of the reasons I think that that story 00:44.520 --> 00:47.380 is kind of just inserted within the chronicles here 00:47.380 --> 00:50.380 of Joseph is because of the fact that Joseph ended up 00:50.380 --> 00:54.380 being a better representation of Jesus Christ 00:54.380 --> 00:55.580 far more than Judah. 00:55.580 --> 00:57.740 And of course we know that Judah, 00:57.740 --> 01:00.600 that's from where Jesus Christ is gonna come from, 01:00.600 --> 01:05.420 but he isn't necessarily a typology of Jesus Christ. 01:05.420 --> 01:07.100 Joseph actually operates far better. 01:07.100 --> 01:10.500 Far greater of a typology of Jesus than Judah. 01:10.500 --> 01:15.680 But Judah is mentioned in chapter 38 because from Judah you have pharez and pharez essentially 01:15.680 --> 01:18.700 comes into the genealogy of Jesus Christ. 01:18.700 --> 01:20.920 So it's all still about Christ. 01:20.920 --> 01:25.180 And so the Lord is trying to help us to realize that, you know, he's using imperfect men. 01:25.180 --> 01:28.800 There's imperfect people within the genealogy of Jesus. 01:28.800 --> 01:32.420 But that's why I believe Genesis 38 is being mentioned there. 01:32.420 --> 01:35.100 from Genesis 37 and on. It's all about... 01:35.100 --> 01:39.820 Joseph and quite frankly, I'll be honest with you, this is probably my favorite part of the 01:39.820 --> 01:41.240 book of Genesis. 01:41.240 --> 01:44.260 When I read through the story of Joseph, it's very emotional. 01:44.260 --> 01:50.480 There's a lot going on and it's just a lot of great representations, typologies, illustrations 01:50.480 --> 01:51.840 of Jesus Christ. 01:51.840 --> 01:52.840 So let's start in verse number one. 01:52.840 --> 01:58.180 It says, and Jacob dwelled in the land wherein his father was a stranger in the land of Canaan. 01:58.180 --> 02:00.720 These are the generations of Jacob. 02:00.720 --> 02:03.100 of being 17 years old was feeding the... 02:03.100 --> 02:07.660 with his brethren and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of 02:07.660 --> 02:13.500 Zilpah, his father's wives, and Joseph brought unto his father their evil 02:13.500 --> 02:18.860 report. So right off the bat we're seeing that Joseph is obviously reporting to 02:18.860 --> 02:22.660 his dad regarding the deeds of his brethren, specifically says that he's 02:22.660 --> 02:27.220 bringing up their evil report. Whether that means that they're dishonest, 02:27.220 --> 02:30.980 they're doing things that are not right, they're doing things that would be 02:31.100 --> 02:35.100 Displeasing in the eyes of the father and this is one of the reasons why? 02:35.940 --> 02:39.300 Joseph's brethren despised him we're gonna see later on some other reasons 02:39.300 --> 02:45.780 But primarily we also see here that it's because of the fact that he's testifying of their evil report 02:45.780 --> 02:51.860 So the first illustration representation of Christ here is that Jesus just as Joseph 02:52.260 --> 02:59.000 Also came to Israel and he testified of their evil deeds, right? Go to John chapter 2 if you would 02:59.100 --> 03:01.940 John chapter 2, hold your place there in Genesis 37. 03:01.940 --> 03:03.580 And let's go to John chapter 2. 03:04.800 --> 03:10.480 As you're turning there, I'm going to read to you from John chapter 3 and verse number 20 03:10.480 --> 03:15.440 It says for everyone that doeth evil, hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds 03:15.760 --> 03:21.680 Should be reproved, but he that doeth truth come into the light, that his deeds may be made manifest that they are wrought in God 03:21.800 --> 03:25.900 Look at Genesis chapter 2 if you would and verse number 23 03:25.900 --> 03:31.420 It says now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover in the feast day many believed in his name 03:31.900 --> 03:35.080 when they saw the miracles which he did. 03:35.080 --> 03:39.540 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men. 03:40.100 --> 03:46.980 And it says here, and needed not that any should testify of man, for he knew what was in man. 03:46.980 --> 03:52.260 And of course, we know that Jesus throughout his ministry was constantly calling out the Jews. 03:52.260 --> 03:57.140 He was constantly calling out the Pharisees. He was bringing up their evil report. The fact that 03:57.140 --> 04:01.700 they were teaching for doctrines, the commandments of men, the fact that they didn't really believe 04:01.700 --> 04:07.060 in Moses because they rejected him. He was constantly preaching against them, right? 04:07.060 --> 04:08.100 And so we see this. 04:08.100 --> 04:14.660 parallel with Joseph that the first illustration typology that we come across is his ability 04:14.660 --> 04:16.060 to bring up the evil report. 04:16.060 --> 04:19.220 Now let me just say this is when it comes to preaching that's what we're supposed to 04:19.220 --> 04:19.420 do. 04:19.800 --> 04:25.920 We're obviously supposed to exhort people, build people up, comfort people, but the Bible 04:25.920 --> 04:30.440 says that we're also supposed to bring up the evil report of others, correct others. 04:30.440 --> 04:35.360 The Bible says to preach the word, be instant in season, out of season, reprove, rebuke, 04:35.360 --> 04:37.960 and exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 04:38.300 --> 04:44.100 Meaning that it's our job as preachers, pastors, to bring up the evil report of this world. 04:44.100 --> 04:49.800 To preach against the fornication, preach against drunkenness, preach against the sins of society. 04:49.800 --> 04:52.600 And you know what? That's one of the reasons why people are going to hate us. 04:52.600 --> 04:55.600 That's one of the reasons people are going to hate you. 04:55.600 --> 04:59.700 Maybe your family and friends have separated you from their company. 04:59.700 --> 05:03.600 It's not necessarily because there's something wrong with you, it's because there's something wrong with them. 05:03.900 --> 05:08.860 And it's because of the fact that you're exposing the sinfulness of their actions, 05:08.860 --> 05:14.780 what they believe or their deeds and so forth. And so we can't expect to be loved by the world. 05:14.780 --> 05:21.020 We can't expect to live a godly life and not have people criticize us or be angry with us, 05:21.020 --> 05:25.820 because it's our job to call out the sin, to bring up that evil report. 05:25.820 --> 05:28.460 So we can look at Joseph and say, oh man, he's just a little snitch. 05:29.200 --> 05:33.360 You know, he's just ratting on his brothers, he's bringing up the evil report. 05:34.300 --> 05:38.860 And no one likes a snitch for sure, but let's just be honest, he's probably telling the dad 05:39.500 --> 05:45.420 about things that they're doing that are bad, right? They're wicked, they're being dishonest, 05:45.420 --> 05:50.780 maybe they're doing things that are sinful, and Joseph's coming back and he's bringing this report 05:50.780 --> 05:55.020 like, hey, you know, they're doing some wicked stuff over there, I just want to let you know. 05:55.020 --> 05:59.660 They're being lazy, maybe they're not working, you know, they're claiming that they're doing 05:59.660 --> 06:01.900 one thing, but they're actually doing the exact opposite. 06:02.300 --> 06:06.860 And, you know, obviously when you're in the world, no one likes a snitch, but at the end 06:06.860 --> 06:08.900 of the day the Bible tells us to be honest though. 06:09.200 --> 06:18.200 Okay, to be truthful, to be honest, to expose lies, and you know, to make sure that we are individuals of integrity 06:18.200 --> 06:24.700 and you know, not being this individual that just, well, I don't want to get in trouble, I want to be liked by my co-workers, 06:24.700 --> 06:30.700 I want to be liked by my family and friends, so I'm just going to turn a blind eye to sinfulness and criminal acts or whatever it may be. 06:30.700 --> 06:34.700 It's not right to do. We need to be like Joseph and bring up the evil report to the Father. 06:35.100 --> 06:40.540 Verse 3 says, now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the 06:40.540 --> 06:45.020 son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors. 06:45.700 --> 06:51.020 Joseph is favored of his father Jacob and we see there because of the fact that it's 06:51.020 --> 06:56.100 the child of his old age and the parallel that we can derive from this is the fact that 06:56.100 --> 07:01.260 you know God told Jesus this is my beloved son and whom I am well pleased right he loved 07:01.260 --> 07:06.180 the Lord Jesus Christ that is his son and it specifically says that he made his son 07:06.180 --> 07:08.100 a coat of many colors. 07:08.400 --> 07:10.800 So he made him this coat. 07:10.800 --> 07:14.400 It's kind of, you know, it's a raid with a variety of 07:14.400 --> 07:15.280 different colors. 07:15.280 --> 07:16.480 Not my style, right? 07:16.480 --> 07:19.600 But, you know, hey, maybe his dad meant well or whatever. 07:19.600 --> 07:21.840 And you think to yourself, what's the? 07:22.000 --> 07:25.860 What is the parallel there to Jesus Christ? How does this relate to Jesus Christ? 07:25.860 --> 07:28.320 Well, we're gonna see what's gonna be done to the coat later 07:28.580 --> 07:34.000 But I personally believe that the reason he gave him that coat of many colors and why it parallels Jesus Christ 07:34.000 --> 07:39.740 It's because Jesus was made in the likeness of sinful flesh and when we talk about sinful flesh 07:39.740 --> 07:43.860 We're talking about everyone in this world. No matter what color you are, right? 07:44.400 --> 07:48.240 You know, red and yellow, black and white, they are all precious in his sight. 07:48.240 --> 07:51.120 So he took upon himself the form of sinful flesh. 07:51.120 --> 07:55.760 And then later on we see that the same coat is dipped in what? Blood. 07:56.000 --> 07:59.440 Why? Because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. 07:59.440 --> 08:07.280 And so every kindred and tongue and nation is given the opportunity to be covered in the blood 08:07.280 --> 08:11.120 of the Lamb of God who should take away the sins of the world. So I believe that this 08:11.120 --> 08:16.640 coat of many colors represents all nations, kindreds and tongues. Look at verse four here. 08:16.640 --> 08:21.680 It says, and when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, 08:21.680 --> 08:22.680 They hated him! 08:23.100 --> 08:26.860 and could not speak peaceably unto him. 08:27.700 --> 08:30.200 They don't like that he's favored above everyone else 08:30.200 --> 08:34.400 And obviously, you know, if we're to address this in a practical way 08:34.400 --> 08:39.000 It's never good to show favoritism to one child over the other, right? 08:39.000 --> 08:43.000 You should love your children equally and not show some sort of favor 08:43.000 --> 08:46.800 Because you don't want to cause resentment in your other children 08:46.800 --> 08:50.600 Because if you favor one over the other, your other children are going to know about it, right? 08:50.600 --> 08:54.000 They're going to know that you're kind of lenient with this person 08:54.000 --> 08:55.700 You are favoritism 08:55.700 --> 08:58.700 You're favoring them, you bless them more, 08:58.700 --> 09:02.100 you despise the other, and that's not right to do. 09:02.100 --> 09:05.740 I believe that we as parents should make sure 09:05.740 --> 09:07.940 that we equally love all our children. 09:07.940 --> 09:09.740 And here's the thing, I have six kids, 09:09.740 --> 09:10.860 I have a lot of kids. 09:10.860 --> 09:13.060 I got six, and I can honestly tell you 09:13.060 --> 09:17.220 with integrity of heart that I love all my children equally. 09:17.220 --> 09:19.420 And I don't favor one over the other. 09:19.420 --> 09:21.260 If you're like, if you could just lose one, 09:21.260 --> 09:22.100 what would you lose? 09:22.100 --> 09:22.400 None of them. 09:23.100 --> 09:28.100 I love all my children and I can't picture my life without any one of them, you know 09:28.100 --> 09:33.820 And it's not like when I'm showing affection to one it's just like oh, yeah, this is my favorite one right here now 09:34.020 --> 09:38.100 Grandparents have a tendency to be that way towards their kids, you know kids sometimes 09:38.100 --> 09:41.300 They're just like this is the one but parents shouldn't be that way, you know 09:41.300 --> 09:43.900 We need to make sure that we favor our children 09:43.900 --> 09:48.180 You're like what if I think one is cuter than the other or something like that, you know 09:48.800 --> 09:52.600 We need to just recognize that they're all beautiful in their own way, okay? 09:52.600 --> 10:00.600 And, you know, we need to favor them and not, you know, cause- provoke them to feel a sense of resentment because 10:00.600 --> 10:04.000 Oh, I just like this one more than the other or something like that. It's wrong to do. 10:04.000 --> 10:05.400 Jacob shouldn't do this. 10:05.400 --> 10:09.400 And, you know, it's wrong for him to do this because, you know, he's obviously causing 10:09.400 --> 10:15.400 his other sons to have bitterness not only towards Jacob but more so towards Joseph. 10:15.500 --> 10:21.880 Joseph's not doing anything wrong right and so don't be the parent that just shows favoritism towards one over the other 10:22.360 --> 10:28.960 Because of well, you know we just get along better or you know, I just like this one more or something like that 10:28.960 --> 10:31.760 Well, if that's true, just don't verbalize it, okay? 10:32.720 --> 10:39.700 Don't verbalize it and work on loving your children equally because it's not right to have one favored over the other 10:40.500 --> 10:49.500 Now, it says here that they hated him and could not speak peaceably with him, meaning that they're angry at him, they're bitter towards him, they don't want him to be in their company 10:49.500 --> 10:58.500 It says in verse 5, and Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren, and they hated him, yet the more 10:58.500 --> 11:04.500 So what does this mean? You know, obviously we're going to look at the dreams that he's having, and they're very prophetic dreams 11:04.500 --> 11:07.500 These are dreams that are being given to him by God 11:07.700 --> 11:12.360 But let's address the practical aspect of this passage and then we're going to get into the application 11:12.900 --> 11:16.660 What this is actually illustrated in a spiritual way. The practical thing is this, you know 11:17.060 --> 11:19.940 If you are an ambitious person, right? 11:20.580 --> 11:25.620 And you know your ambition, you know, you got to be careful who you share your ambitions with 11:26.420 --> 11:28.440 Why because sometimes people are just haters 11:29.600 --> 11:33.280 You share your ambition, your goals, and what you want to do. 11:33.280 --> 11:34.160 And you know what? 11:34.160 --> 11:38.720 Sometimes people are, they're just like, they just don't like the fact that you want to succeed. 11:39.680 --> 11:42.400 You know, you share your dreams, so to speak. 11:42.400 --> 11:46.080 And then people, all they have to do is just want to criticize you 11:46.080 --> 11:49.840 and try to stop you from succeeding, stop you from going forward. 11:49.840 --> 11:53.120 You know, make sure you share your ambitions with ambitious people 11:53.120 --> 11:55.440 or people that are in support of your success. 11:56.200 --> 12:01.360 Now look, obviously, if you come to me and share your ambition and it's a stupid idea, 12:01.360 --> 12:03.760 I'm going to tell you. 12:03.760 --> 12:07.400 I think I'm going to open a lottery shop or something. 12:07.400 --> 12:08.520 That's a stupid idea. 12:08.520 --> 12:10.360 It's sinful. 12:10.360 --> 12:14.880 Obviously we need to be realistic about goals and dreams and visions. 12:14.880 --> 12:18.920 When I say vision, I'm talking about a dream, some sort of ambition that you might have. 12:19.600 --> 12:26.600 But at the end of the day, you know, you need to make sure that you share your dreams and your ambitions with the right kind of people. 12:26.600 --> 12:31.600 Because I'm just going to tell you right now, in this world, even amongst Christians, you have haters. 12:32.700 --> 12:36.820 People who oh man this guy he wants to do this or he has this ambition 12:36.820 --> 12:40.380 I don't think that's gonna work. You're not you shouldn't do that 12:40.380 --> 12:44.540 I wouldn't try that if I were you you can't even do this or that and the other 12:44.580 --> 12:50.020 You know when those types of words come out of someone's mouth just mark it down. This person is filled with envy 12:51.140 --> 12:54.480 What happened to Joseph's brothers? I guess you're wrong. 17:54.700 --> 17:59.700 Okay? And people think like, oh, you're just like a one-trick pony. You know, he didn't know that Judah was supposed to be the one to really represent the 54:01.520 --> 54:05.840 Lord Jesus Christ. But obviously, chapter 38, he messes that up. 54:06.600 --> 54:10.920 So God ends up turning his attention towards towards Joseph and Joseph just ends up becoming 54:10.920 --> 54:16.120 this beautiful picture of Jesus and everything that he went through.
