Titus chapter 2 and verse 14 says, 00:06.400 --> 00:13.560 who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purifying to himself a peculiar people, 00:13.560 --> 00:21.320 zealous of good works. I want you to notice there that it says that he's redeeming to himself a peculiar people. 00:21.320 --> 00:28.000 Okay, this is referring to the fact that God is separating us as his people as being holy. 00:28.000 --> 00:31.840 as being separated, as being different than everyone else. 00:31.840 --> 00:35.480 And make no mistake about it, God wants us to be distinctly different 00:35.480 --> 00:38.160 from not just the world, that's obvious, 00:38.160 --> 00:41.440 but even from other Christians, even from other churches, 00:41.440 --> 00:45.760 even from different individuals that claim to be believers. 00:45.760 --> 00:48.000 He wants us to be distinctly different 00:48.000 --> 00:50.880 and He wants us to demonstrate that in our personal lives. 00:50.880 --> 00:53.840 Go with me if you would to 1 Peter chapter 2 if you would. 00:53.840 --> 00:55.600 1 Peter chapter 2. 00:56.300 --> 01:01.020 1st Peter chapter 2, let me start off by saying that God wants us to be a peculiar people 01:01.020 --> 01:04.820 and it specifically says that he wants us to be zealous of good works 01:04.820 --> 01:07.620 so that's one way that God wants us to be different 01:07.620 --> 01:12.460 is not just in the works that we do, but that we do them zealously, right? 01:12.460 --> 01:19.660 passionately, that we would be zealous over the ministry, over the things of God, over the preaching of the word of God 01:19.660 --> 01:24.300 this means that we can't be lukewarm, this means we can't be apathetic towards the things of God 01:24.300 --> 01:29.260 We can't be apathetic towards church towards the Bible the Bible commands us to have 01:29.780 --> 01:36.620 Fervency right be fervent in business the Bible says to be passionate to have a cloak of zeal 01:36.940 --> 01:41.940 When we serve the Lord why because we're saved right we have the Bible we have Christ 01:42.100 --> 01:48.220 We have the right gospel we have salvation. We are a treasure unto the Lord therefore 01:48.460 --> 01:50.460 Whatever we do we should do with all our might 01:51.300 --> 01:57.840 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do with thy might the Bible says and obviously we could apply this to your job 01:57.940 --> 02:04.840 You can apply this to your family, but just being a Christian in general requires for us to have some zeal about ourselves, right? 02:05.400 --> 02:09.080 He says be zealous of good works. He said well, you know pastor 02:09.080 --> 02:13.960 I know this one false religion and they seem to be very zealous over the things that they do 02:14.280 --> 02:17.160 Well tithes chapter one and verse 16 says this 02:17.960 --> 02:26.200 Excuse me. They profess that they know god but in works they deny him being abominable and disobedient and unto every good work reprobate 02:26.520 --> 02:30.920 So just because someone participates in what we would consider to be an outward expression of works 02:31.160 --> 02:33.320 Doesn't mean that they're words that god accepts, right? 02:33.400 --> 02:38.860 And it doesn't mean that just because they're zealous it means that it just lends veracity to their message 02:39.020 --> 02:43.280 Lends veracity to their beliefs because at the end of the day, you know the Apostle Paul 02:43.720 --> 02:50.340 Prior to him being saved the Bible says that he was zealous of his forefathers religions of the Jews religion 02:50.340 --> 02:52.360 And we obviously know that he was in the wrong, right? 02:52.460 --> 02:56.080 So just because someone is zealous and passionate about their false religion 02:56.080 --> 03:01.400 It doesn't lend veracity to it just because they get a burning in the bosom when they claim to read their fault 03:01.400 --> 03:06.920 book just because they give their lives to just devotion to their lies and to 03:06.920 --> 03:11.380 their religion to their church doesn't mean it's true. God wants us to be 03:11.380 --> 03:15.200 zealous of good works and good works according to the Bible are referring to 03:15.200 --> 03:19.820 that which is done in Christ that which is done in salvation that which is done 03:19.820 --> 03:25.600 by saved people right the Bible says in 1st Peter look at chapter 2 if you would 03:26.300 --> 03:29.960 1 Peter chapter 2 and verse 9 it says here, 03:29.960 --> 03:35.300 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. 03:35.600 --> 03:42.520 Peculiar people that you should show forth the praises of him with called the out of darkness into his marvelous light 03:42.520 --> 03:49.300 This is obviously a quotation from the Old Testament when God would address and describe his people 03:49.400 --> 03:55.120 He wanted everyone to know that there were the chosen people of God that there were a peculiar treasure unto him 03:55.320 --> 03:58.320 Based upon that Old Covenant. Well now we're in the New Testament 03:59.100 --> 04:05.160 And as Peter is writing to those in Cappadocia, Bithynia, Pontius, Galatia 04:05.160 --> 04:08.780 Obviously this is referring to Gentile believers, not referring to Jews 04:08.780 --> 04:13.420 You know, this transitions over and says that we are the chosen people of God 04:13.420 --> 04:16.160 We are the royal priesthood 04:16.160 --> 04:18.960 We are the holy spiritual nation 04:18.960 --> 04:21.640 And it says that we are the peculiar people, okay? 04:22.400 --> 04:28.240 And it specifically says at the end of verse 9, it says that you should show forth the praises of him 04:28.240 --> 04:31.680 who hath called thee out of darkness into his marvelous light. 04:31.680 --> 04:34.880 Meaning that obviously God views us as his chosen people, 04:34.880 --> 04:37.720 but God wants us to demonstrate that to the world as well. 04:37.720 --> 04:39.400 Through our light, right? 04:39.400 --> 04:42.520 The Bible tells us, let your light so shine before men 04:42.520 --> 04:46.720 that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 04:46.720 --> 04:50.000 That means that there's Christians out there that have a dim light. 04:50.100 --> 04:54.800 They're not necessarily shining forth the praises of him who have called them out of darkness 04:55.060 --> 04:59.420 They're still involved in sin. They're living godless and worldly lives 04:59.500 --> 05:04.120 They're not necessarily allowing their minds to be reformed according to the Bible 05:04.120 --> 05:07.700 And so when the world looks at them, they don't really see anything different about them 05:08.100 --> 05:13.460 And in fact, in a lot of ways, sometimes they're a bad testimony to Christianity, right? 05:13.460 --> 05:18.020 Why? Because they're living a godless life, maybe they're involved in fornication, 05:18.020 --> 05:23.300 they're involved in drunkenness, they're involved in drugs, they're not in church. 05:23.300 --> 05:26.820 And so when people find out that they're Christians but they're living a certain way, 05:26.820 --> 05:29.940 it causes people to kind of think, why are you being such a hypocrite? 05:30.600 --> 05:35.160 And what God's will is for us is for us to show forth that light. 05:35.160 --> 05:41.160 Show forth the light of holiness, of righteousness, as His peculiar people. 05:41.160 --> 05:42.780 Go to Leviticus chapter 20 if you would. 05:42.780 --> 05:43.780 Leviticus chapter 20. 05:43.780 --> 05:46.160 The title of the sermon is, Be Different. 05:46.600 --> 05:51.240 The goal for us as Christians is that we would be distinguished from everyone else 05:51.800 --> 05:56.140 Not just in how we believe but also in our conduct our conversation 05:56.920 --> 06:02.760 God wants the world to look at us and say there's something different about them leviticus chapter 20 06:03.560 --> 06:08.940 And let's look down at verse number 23. It says and you shall not walk in the manner 06:09.600 --> 06:14.420 Leviticus chapter 20 verse 23 and you shall not walk in the manner of the nation 06:14.740 --> 06:19.680 Which I cast out before you for they committed all these things and therefore I abhorred them 06:20.160 --> 06:22.160 So one of the first things that God 06:22.280 --> 06:27.680 Essentially teaches his people when being different as he's saying hey don't be like the other nations 06:28.120 --> 06:33.860 Don't try to emulate the other nations and when he says other nations we can interpret this in the New Testament to being like 06:33.860 --> 06:35.700 the unsaved right 06:35.700 --> 06:40.180 Don't be you know you're the spiritual nation made up of a spiritual house 06:41.100 --> 06:47.200 Built up a spiritual house and so forth. Don't be like the other houses. Don't be like the other nations 06:47.200 --> 06:49.220 This is similar to what the Apostle Paul said 06:49.220 --> 06:55.960 I testify in the Lord that you walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their minds having their understanding 06:56.360 --> 07:02.720 Darken, you know being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them because of the blindness of their heart 07:02.720 --> 07:09.100 God saying hey, don't emulate or copy the way unsafe people live. Don't be like the other nations. Don't copy their 07:09.100 --> 07:14.580 customs you know the Bible also says in Jeremiah chapter 10 be not dismayed at 07:14.580 --> 07:19.060 the signs of heaven for the heathen are dismayed at them right basically saying 07:19.060 --> 07:24.060 like hey don't copy the customs don't copy the practices the ideologies the 07:24.060 --> 07:28.060 philosophies of this worldwide because you're a spiritual nation supposed to 07:28.060 --> 07:33.620 be different okay he says and by the way he also says in verse 23 for I I 07:33.620 --> 07:34.700 abhorred them 07:35.000 --> 07:40.960 Okay, let me explain to you what a poor means. You know today. We don't necessarily use that word a whole lot. We just say hate 07:41.760 --> 07:45.640 Okay, so the Bible is telling us here that God hated the Canaanites 07:45.640 --> 07:51.280 And you know you have this this idea here that God loves everyone and in general 07:51.560 --> 07:55.700 We know that he does because God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son 07:55.760 --> 07:58.680 But hold on a second we need a balanced view of this as well though 07:59.200 --> 08:08.200 And often that position is fomented so much that that automatically means in the minds of people that God doesn't hate. 08:08.200 --> 08:12.200 But folks, hell exists and hell is God's ultimate expression of hate. 08:12.200 --> 08:16.200 Because you don't send someone to hell that you love. 08:16.200 --> 08:20.900 And there's multiple examples in the Bible where God specifically says, I hate them. 08:21.600 --> 08:27.500 The Bible tells us in Psalm 5,5, the wicked shall not stand in thy sight. Thou hatest all workers of iniquity 08:27.760 --> 08:31.420 You know, you don't need to go to the Hebrew to try to figure out what he means by that. It's pretty clear 08:31.920 --> 08:38.780 Okay, he abhors them. He hates them. We also see I believe it's in Hosea chapter 9 verse 15 08:38.880 --> 08:45.240 He specifically tells Israel, you know, therefore I have hated them and in case you didn't understand what that meant 08:45.240 --> 08:47.240 He says I will love them no more 08:48.080 --> 08:49.100 Okay 08:49.400 --> 08:55.820 And so we see here that these nations that he's removing from Canaan land 08:55.820 --> 08:59.860 in order for Israel to occupy the land, he's saying, man, I hate these people because 08:59.860 --> 09:05.700 they're full of infanticide, sodomy, bestiality, all manner of abominations 09:05.700 --> 09:07.340 Therefore don't act like that 09:07.340 --> 09:12.620 Don't act like some homo, don't act like some heathen, don't act like some idolater 09:12.620 --> 09:14.860 I hated them, that's the reason I removed them from the land 09:16.700 --> 09:20.300 He said, you shall not walk after the manner of the nation which I cast out before you 09:20.300 --> 09:22.780 for they committed all these things and therefore I abhorred them 09:22.780 --> 09:25.700 and what is that? It's kind of like a threat he's giving 09:25.700 --> 09:28.100 He's like, you know, if you start acting like that I'm going to throw you out too 09:28.100 --> 09:32.260 Verse 24, but I have said unto you, you shall inherit their land 09:32.260 --> 09:34.980 and I will give it unto you to possess it 09:34.980 --> 09:37.580 a land that floweth with milk and honey 09:37.580 --> 09:40.580 I am the Lord your God which have separated you 09:40.580 --> 09:42.180 from other people 09:42.700 --> 09:44.200 Now I want you to notice verse 25 09:44.200 --> 09:48.600 Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beast and unclean 09:48.600 --> 09:51.100 and between unclean fouls and clean 09:51.100 --> 09:55.600 and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast or by foul 09:55.600 --> 09:58.800 or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground 09:58.800 --> 10:01.500 which have separated from you as unclean 10:01.500 --> 10:04.700 This is often referred to as the dietary laws of the Bible, right? 10:05.700 --> 10:08.600 And you know, this is essentially saying because there's not 10:08.800 --> 10:15.920 anything inherently wrong with what the Bible would classify as an unclean animal because we see if that was true 10:16.080 --> 10:18.880 You know then God's causing his people to sin in 10:19.400 --> 10:23.220 Genesis chapter 9 when he specifically said you could eat the unclean animals, right? 10:23.240 --> 10:28.440 This is obviously a law that he instituted at this particular time in this era 10:29.400 --> 10:34.400 In order to symbolically represent that he wanted his people to be separated from the unclean 10:35.400 --> 10:41.400 Which is why he talks about, hey, don't be like the other nations, I abhor them, I'm gonna give you their land 10:41.400 --> 10:45.900 And then he says in verse 25, ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean beasts 10:45.900 --> 10:51.900 In other words, a way to remember how separated I want you to be from the other nations 10:51.900 --> 10:55.400 Is that you're gonna abide by these dietary laws that will remind you of that 10:55.600 --> 11:00.600 So it's just like, hey, don't be like the Canaanite because the Canaanite in God's eyes is like the shrimp. 11:00.600 --> 11:06.100 It's like the swine. It's like these unclean animals that you're not supposed to touch. 11:06.100 --> 11:12.600 And when you abide by that law, you're reminding yourself, hey, I'm not supposed to be like the other nations and so forth. 11:12.600 --> 11:15.600 And obviously we know that that changes in the New Testament. 11:15.600 --> 11:20.600 The New Testament tells us that every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving. 11:20.600 --> 11:23.600 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 11:23.600 --> 11:30.200 chapter 4. He goes on to say verse 26, and ye shall be holy unto me, for I the Lord am 11:30.200 --> 11:38.120 holy and have, I want you to notice this, severed you from other people that ye should be mine. 11:38.120 --> 11:42.760 So he's saying here, you're my people, I want you to be separated, you shall not be like 11:42.760 --> 11:46.360 the other nations. And then he just says, look, just put it this way, I've kind of cut 11:46.360 --> 11:47.680 you off from everyone else. 11:48.000 --> 11:55.840 I've severed you from everyone else, demonstrating that God wants us to be different, separated, 11:55.840 --> 11:58.960 holy unto Him, away from everyone else. 11:58.960 --> 11:59.960 Okay? 11:59.960 --> 12:01.120 Go to Deuteronomy chapter 4 if you would. 12:01.120 --> 12:02.240 Deuteronomy chapter 4. 12:03.500 --> 12:11.340 The title of the sermon is, Be Different. We should endeavor as God's people to be holy, righteous, and different. 12:11.340 --> 12:14.280 Distinctly different from everyone else. 12:14.280 --> 12:19.180 Distinguished in this world based upon the principles and doctrines of the Bible. 12:19.180 --> 12:21.180 Look at Deuteronomy chapter 4. 12:22.180 --> 12:23.480 And look at verse number 5. It says, 12:23.480 --> 12:28.320 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, 12:28.320 --> 12:31.200 that you should do so in the land whether you go to possess it. 12:31.500 --> 12:36.740 keep therefore and do them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, 12:36.740 --> 12:42.500 which shall hear of these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 12:42.700 --> 12:48.300 So you know, God is blessing Israel at this particular time with knowledge and wisdom, 12:48.940 --> 12:56.060 amazing statutes of civil law, and all these precepts that he's laying out in the Old Testament. 12:56.060 --> 13:00.380 And he's like, I'm doing it for your benefit, but I'm also doing it so that other nations can be 13:00.380 --> 13:02.540 attracted to you. Okay. 13:03.400 --> 13:10.560 Want them to see that you are a wise and understanding people that you're valuable that you are that treasure 13:11.120 --> 13:14.980 Unto the Lord he goes on to say in verse 7 for what nation is there so great? 13:15.800 --> 13:22.200 Who hath God so nigh unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon him for. 13:22.200 --> 13:28.920 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, 13:28.920 --> 13:32.920 which I set before you this day?" So in other words, he's like, I want people to look at this 13:32.920 --> 13:38.120 nation and be like, man, Israel is just an amazing nation. Not because there's anything amazing 13:38.120 --> 13:43.720 inherently about them, but because of their God, because of what they believe, because of... 13:43.800 --> 13:49.320 their convictions because of their laws. You know in like manner there's nothing inherently 13:49.320 --> 13:55.920 great about us. Now we're God's people. We are that treasure. Yes we're peculiar unto 13:55.920 --> 14:00.600 the Lord but it should be a reflection of the laws of God in us, right? It should be 14:00.600 --> 14:05.120 the fact that they see what we believe and see something different. 14:05.400 --> 14:14.600 And think to themselves, I want what that person has because of what they believe, what they abide by, the statutes that they hold to, the convictions that they have. 14:14.600 --> 14:18.400 Go to Deuteronomy chapter 14. Look at Deuteronomy chapter 14 if you would. 14:18.400 --> 14:27.200 Deuteronomy chapter 14. Title of the sermon is, be different. This is all introduction here. Deuteronomy chapter 14. 14:28.200 --> 14:34.480 Verse 2 it says this, for thou art in holy people unto the Lord thy God and 14:34.680 --> 14:39.360 The Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself 14:40.000 --> 14:43.580 Above all the nations that are upon the earth 14:43.580 --> 14:48.260 So again, we see here that God is explicitly saying you're supposed to be peculiar now 14:48.980 --> 14:52.400 Peculiar the way we would use it today is like you're kind of like weird, right? 14:52.400 --> 14:55.760 and I'm gonna get into that particular point later on but 14:56.400 --> 15:00.240 In the Bible, when the Bible says peculiar, obviously it could have that connotation 15:00.240 --> 15:05.280 but it's more closely related to just different, separated, holy unto himself. 15:06.320 --> 15:09.760 So there obviously has to be some sort of characteristics, some attributes that you have 15:09.760 --> 15:14.480 about your life that makes you peculiar. And this morning I kind of want to go through some of the 15:14.480 --> 15:18.720 things that God wants you to be different in. Number one, go to Matthew chapter seven if you 15:18.720 --> 15:23.280 would. Matthew chapter 7, Matthew chapter 7 if you would. 15:24.000 --> 15:27.760 Too many Christians today are just kind of worldly, right? 15:27.760 --> 15:29.600 And when we think of worldly, we think of, 15:29.600 --> 15:32.400 oh, it's because they listened to Drake or something, right? 15:33.300 --> 15:36.500 Which, you know, that's just gay and all that 15:36.500 --> 15:44.800 But I'm just, when the Bible says worldly, it's actually referring to the fact that you're just conformed to the ideologies, practices of this world 15:44.800 --> 15:48.000 The Bible says, love not the world, not the things that are in the world 15:48.000 --> 15:51.200 If any man loved the world, the love of the Father is not in him 15:51.200 --> 15:58.300 You know, to be a worldly Christian is someone who's been spoiled through philosophy and vain deceit, right? 15:58.800 --> 16:00.920 and not after Christ. 16:00.920 --> 16:03.800 It's someone who essentially has allowed 16:03.800 --> 16:06.520 the philosophies and ideologies 16:06.520 --> 16:09.720 to essentially take preeminence over the Bible. 16:10.200 --> 16:16.000 And the Bible is always telling us, you know, cast down imaginations, every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God. 16:16.000 --> 16:19.600 It tells us to allow the word of Christ to dwell in you richly. 16:19.600 --> 16:25.900 It obviously tells us, hey, man should not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God. 16:25.900 --> 16:29.600 I have esteemed the words of thy mouth more than my necessary foods. 16:29.600 --> 16:38.200 So it's obviously constantly emphasizing the importance of having God's word above everything else and filtering everything that we do and believe based off of 16:38.200 --> 16:41.940 the Bible. This is why we say that the Bible is our final authority for all 16:41.940 --> 16:46.840 matters of faith and practice. What about the Church Fathers though? They're 16:46.840 --> 16:50.180 dead I don't know I don't really care what they believe. I'm not a Church 16:50.180 --> 16:53.980 Fathers guy. Why would I appeal to an inferior authority when I already have 16:53.980 --> 16:58.120 the living Word of God in front of me? I don't need to compare notes with some 16:58.120 --> 17:02.700 dead dude who was alive a thousand years ago to substantiate what I believe. 17:02.700 --> 17:08.260 Because I have the Word of God right here and the Bible says that the anointing which you have in you abideth in you and 17:08.260 --> 17:10.260 need not need not that any man teach you 17:11.800 --> 17:18.180 You know that we have the Word of God we have the living Word we have the Holy Spirit that brings us into all truth 17:18.600 --> 17:23.240 You know the spirit searches all things ye the deep things of God the Bible says 17:23.800 --> 17:27.720 And you know what? Obviously there's truths that have been hidden from this world 17:27.720 --> 17:32.000 I have not seen, neither ear have heard, neither have entered into the heart of man 17:32.000 --> 17:34.000 the things that God has prepared for them that love him 17:34.000 --> 17:36.000 but he has revealed them unto us! 17:37.000 --> 17:40.000 So you know what? There's a lot of wisdom and statutes 17:40.000 --> 17:43.600 that yeah, people a thousand years ago, 1500 years ago might have believed 17:43.600 --> 17:45.600 but guess what? I can have those truths too 17:46.400 --> 17:49.280 And I don't need to read, I don't need to get a book of it. 17:49.280 --> 17:51.520 Let's see what so-and-so said about this particular, 17:51.520 --> 17:53.360 I don't need to know because I have the Holy Spirit, 17:53.360 --> 17:54.480 and I don't need to dust him off. 17:55.600 --> 17:58.720 He abides within me through salvation. 17:58.720 --> 18:00.000 I have the word of God. 18:01.040 --> 18:06.320 And there's this idea out there that just being in close proximity to the first century AD 18:06.320 --> 18:08.720 automatically means that it's just true. 18:09.900 --> 18:15.900 Like, oh, so you're just going to disregard hundreds of years of church... 18:15.900 --> 18:17.900 Yeah, if they're heretics. 18:17.900 --> 18:23.900 Yeah, and you know, just because someone's in close proximity to Jesus physically doesn't mean they're right. 18:23.900 --> 18:27.900 Hey, you know, how about this? Judas Iscariot. 18:27.900 --> 18:31.900 Should we just lend veracity to him and say that he was right? Because he was with them for three and a half years. 18:32.900 --> 18:39.900 He ate the food that he ate, he slept where he slept, he participated in his ministry, but the guy was a damn double heretic, he was a child of the devil. 18:39.900 --> 18:49.900 And you know what, there's plenty of people that have existed thousands of years ago who claim to be adherents to the word of God, to the religion of God, but they're lying. 18:49.900 --> 18:54.900 Well how do we know what's true and what's not?
