Let's pray. 46:43.360 --> 46:47.200 Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that you fill Pastor Oz with your Spirit, 46:47.200 --> 46:51.400 help him to preach an edifying sermon for us this evening, and help us to receive it. 46:52.900 --> 46:57.060 We're starting a brand new Bible study through the Gospel of Mark. 46:57.060 --> 47:00.860 I'm excited to be back in the New Testament. 47:00.860 --> 47:07.020 And the Gospel of Mark, it's really a book that is highlighting the works of Jesus Christ. 47:07.020 --> 47:10.700 It's very much so a narrative driven book. 47:10.700 --> 47:15.980 You're not going to just find the huge excerpts of Jesus' sermons all in a row like you would 47:15.980 --> 47:17.300 in Matthew. 47:17.300 --> 47:20.820 not as focused on the doctrine of salvation as. 47:20.900 --> 47:27.460 John is, it's really a book that's just highlighting the works that Jesus Christ did in this earth. 47:27.460 --> 47:30.880 And if you go to Mark chapter number 10, I want to show you what I believe to be really 47:30.880 --> 47:35.700 like the theme verse of the gospel of Mark. 47:35.700 --> 47:39.620 Mark chapter number 10, when you're there look at verse number 45. 47:39.620 --> 47:41.460 Here's the theme of the whole book right here. 47:41.460 --> 47:47.060 for even the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister. 47:47.300 --> 47:50.500 To give his life a ransom for many 47:50.500 --> 47:56.060 So really just gonna spend the next who knows how many weeks or months just looking at the works 47:56.180 --> 48:01.960 Looking at Jesus Christ being that suffering servant giving himself in service to us 48:02.680 --> 48:06.980 Now just some background as far as like the who what when where why of this book? 48:07.500 --> 48:13.660 The author of this book internally, if you just only read the Gospel of Mark, it's internally 48:13.660 --> 48:19.740 anonymous, but of course most of church history has attributed this to John Mark. 48:19.740 --> 48:21.660 That's what it's referring to there as Mark. 48:21.660 --> 48:24.780 But honestly, who cares who the human author is? 48:24.780 --> 48:28.220 A lot of people get really hung up on who the human author of the book is. 48:28.220 --> 48:32.060 We all know that all scripture is given by inspiration of God. 48:32.060 --> 48:35.260 And so I could not care less if it was Mark. 48:35.500 --> 48:38.460 or Peter or you know, Bob for all I care, 48:38.460 --> 48:39.540 as the human author, 48:39.540 --> 48:41.980 because really it's God that's the author. 48:41.980 --> 48:44.100 And it's the words that are inspired. 48:44.300 --> 48:45.800 Now when was this written? 48:45.800 --> 48:48.700 Most people place this gospel as being written 48:48.700 --> 48:52.900 somewhere between the late 50s and late 60s 48:52.900 --> 48:54.300 of the first century. 48:54.300 --> 48:56.700 But it's for sure before 8070 48:56.700 --> 48:58.900 because the events of 8070, 48:58.900 --> 49:01.300 the destruction of the temple and of Jerusalem, 49:01.300 --> 49:04.100 it's seen as a future event when Mark is writing this. 49:04.100 --> 49:06.100 So we know it's for sure written before that. 49:06.100 --> 49:07.900 Here's why I bring that up is because a lot of people 49:07.900 --> 49:10.300 will try to discredit Christianity 49:10.300 --> 49:12.100 and discredit the gospels. 49:12.300 --> 49:14.860 because they'll say like, oh, you know, the gospels were written 49:14.860 --> 49:19.900 decades and decades after the events of Jesus's ministry. 49:19.900 --> 49:22.980 You know, how can we possibly know that it was accurate? 49:22.980 --> 49:24.620 Well, here's one way we can know. 49:24.620 --> 49:27.740 For holy men of God spake as they are moved by the Holy Ghost. 49:27.740 --> 49:31.100 There's this thing called inspiration that is a miracle. 49:31.100 --> 49:32.780 And that's what's happening with the authors. 49:32.780 --> 49:34.460 They're inspired by God. 49:34.460 --> 49:37.900 But even if you took inspiration out, which we would never do, 49:37.900 --> 49:40.300 but let's just placate the foolish atheist for a moment. 49:40.300 --> 49:44.120 Even if you took inspiration out, you know the distance in time 49:44.560 --> 49:51.720 Between when the gospel of mark was written and the events of Jesus Christ is so much closer than the diff the distance between 49:52.480 --> 49:56.560 Narrative accounts we have of great figures like for example Alexander the great 49:57.160 --> 50:02.780 No atheist is gonna be like I don't even believe Alexander the great is a real person, you know, how can we know? 50:03.460 --> 50:06.500 Alexander the great was a real person. Here's the thing 50:07.400 --> 50:13.160 For comparison, the closest surviving written account of the life of Alexander the Great 50:13.160 --> 50:18.920 was written between 260 and 290 years after his death. 50:19.600 --> 50:23.960 I don't see all the atheists freaking out about the validity of Alexander the Great 50:23.960 --> 50:30.280 But they do want to over Jesus why because the fool have said in his heart. There is no God. They're just fools 50:30.280 --> 50:37.040 They're just being willingly ignorant. It's not like the gospel the Bible lacks evidence or it's nonsensical 50:37.040 --> 50:39.360 It's just that wicked people don't want to believe it 50:39.520 --> 50:42.520 They have no problem believing in Alexander the great that he was a real person 50:42.920 --> 50:47.200 Even though those written accounts happen 260 years after 50:47.600 --> 50:53.340 Whereas this happened 20, 30 years after the events of Jesus Christ. 50:53.340 --> 50:54.860 Now where was this distributed? 50:54.860 --> 50:58.920 Likely first in Rome or Gentile areas. 50:58.920 --> 51:05.100 The reason why I believe that is because in the gospel of Mark he details Jewish customs 51:05.100 --> 51:06.940 like the Pharisees washing their hands. 51:06.940 --> 51:11.440 He kind of like explains that as if the reader didn't already know those customs were there. 51:11.440 --> 51:14.320 So that makes sense that this is more towards like a gentile audience. 51:14.800 --> 51:24.800 Now why is this written? Like I said, it's less about the doctrine of salvation and it's more about strengthening the faith of people who already believe in Jesus Christ. 51:24.800 --> 51:34.800 And that's everyone in this room. That's why I'm really excited to get into this gospel because really it's just going to show the great example that Jesus gave us of the suffering servant. 51:34.800 --> 51:37.540 This book is really going to emphasize, you know, 51:37.540 --> 51:41.580 counting the cost and realizing that persecution 51:41.580 --> 51:42.800 and trouble and hardship. 51:42.800 --> 51:47.980 is going to happen to you if you actually decide to not just get saved but actually become a 51:48.260 --> 51:53.540 Disciple of Jesus Christ. I mean John the Baptist the first person who's paving the way for him 51:53.540 --> 51:58.280 How did he end his life being beheaded being killed? So let's go ahead and get into it here 51:58.800 --> 52:05.000 Mark chapter 1 verse 1 the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I love this the Son of God 52:05.600 --> 52:11.520 Right so mark starts off the gospel and he says hey, let me just tell you what i'm going to explain to you throughout this whole book 52:11.840 --> 52:14.880 I'm going to tell you about a guy and you know, he's not just a good teacher 52:15.120 --> 52:21.360 He's not just a good prophet. He wasn't just a good philosophizer. He wasn't like what's that guy a canadian guy? 52:22.000 --> 52:23.680 uh the 52:23.680 --> 52:29.060 Jordan peterson he wasn't just like jordan peterson. Hey, i'm going to tell you about the son of god 52:29.700 --> 52:35.900 You know what that makes us different than the Muslims who they quote believe in Jesus 52:36.120 --> 52:40.820 But they believe in a different Jesus because you know what mark chapter one says hey 52:40.820 --> 52:46.560 He's the son of God and if you deny that Jesus is the son of God you are not saved 52:47.000 --> 52:53.280 Even if you say like oh, I like his teachings. Oh, I think he's a good guy. Look you have to believe he's the son of God 52:53.280 --> 52:58.360 That's the whole record that mark is handing over to us right off the bat saying hey, he is the son of God 52:58.360 --> 53:03.500 Now, what does it mean? What does this phrase mean the son of God go to Luke chapter number one? 53:03.500 --> 53:08.280 I feel like this is a phrase that we often use we use it out soul-winning 53:08.280 --> 53:11.720 But it's really important that you actually know what this phrase means 53:12.500 --> 53:17.660 Okay, because the Muslims sure don't understand what this means. Okay, I submit to you that it means many things 53:18.020 --> 53:23.020 One thing that it means that Jesus is the son of God is that he was born of a virgin 53:23.420 --> 53:29.660 That's one aspect of being the son of God is that he's born of a virgin. Hey, he's born of a virgin. It's interesting. What does he tempt him with? 01:45:29.980 --> 01:45:32.140 One of the things he tempts him with is suicide 01:45:32.740 --> 01:45:36.680 You know that's something to think about because suicide is not a topic that's talked about a lot 01:45:36.740 --> 01:45:39.740 But you know if the devil thought he could tempt the Son of God with suicide 01:45:39.820 --> 01:45:45.720 You know, I'm pretty sure that no person is above just ever being tempted with something like that if the devil would bring that 01:45:46.200 --> 01:45:51.000 to the Lord Jesus Christ. You know, you got to be careful. There's people, I mean, doesn't everyone 01:45:51.000 --> 01:45:54.840 say when suicide happens, like, oh, I never saw it coming, never knew it was coming. And it's like, 01:45:54.840 --> 01:45:59.480 look, that's a real temptation. Man, don't ever get to that dark place and just seclude yourself 01:45:59.480 --> 01:46:05.800 or be alone. Get help.
