father-in-law is because 00:52:52.000 --> 00:52:57.010 somehow they can try to you know trick you into marrying their daughter to uh do bad things in 00:52:57.010 --> 00:53:05.270 your life and in uh Samuel 18 verse 23 it says in Saul's servants spake these words in the ears of 00:53:05.270 --> 00:53:11.840 David and David said, "seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son-in-law seeing that I am 00:53:11.840 --> 00:53:18.270 a poor man and lightly esteemed." So it's crazy that David says he's lightly esteemed when he's 00:53:18.270 --> 00:53:24.910 already been anointed by Samuel to be you know king so obviously you know he's greatly esteemed 00:53:24.910 --> 00:53:31.780 but in his mind you know he he has a low uh level of ego and it says, "and the servants of Saul 00:53:31.780 --> 00:53:40.890 told him saying on this manner spake David and Saul said thus shall you do to David the king 00:53:40.890 --> 00:53:49.060 desireth not any dowry but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines to be avenged of the king's enemies." 00:53:49.060 --> 00:53:55.370 And then here's the key, "but Saul thought to make David fall by the hands of the Philistines." 00:53:55.370 --> 00:54:02.170 So Saul thinks that David's gonna die and this is his theory to like protect his family and 00:54:02.170 --> 00:54:10.270 give them the kingdom is like, "hey, let's David go do this and kill the Philistines and he's gonna 00:54:10.270 --> 00:54:17.510 die. He's not gonna marry my daughter." But obviously David is a great warrior and he does it and 00:54:17.510 --> 00:54:21.930 obviously he's gonna keep causing bad things throughout his life because Saul is gonna try 00:54:21.930 --> 00:54:26.520 to keep killing him over and over again and then he has to run and Saul takes his daughter back 00:54:26.520 --> 00:54:35.640 and marries her to another guy and you know just a terrible individual in regards to what he did to 00:54:35.640 --> 00:54:46.450 King David. So if you'd flip over to 1 Samuel 24, obviously Saul is terrible. He's treating his son 00:54:46.450 --> 00:54:50.800 a lot of bad. Even from the beginning he's trying to trick him. He's trying to get him to marry his 00:54:50.800 --> 00:54:57.280 daughter for him to die and you know he just has a really bad spirit, a bad attitude. But King David 00:54:57.280 --> 00:55:04.250 is like the perfect example of having patience, even when suffering the most you know extreme 00:55:04.250 --> 00:55:11.910 forms of tribulation or affliction in your life. And in 1st Samuel 24-3, David has the opportunity 00:55:11.910 --> 00:55:17.700 to end Saul's reign and to take over himself because I mean obviously he's been anointed 00:55:17.700 --> 00:55:23.350 already by Samuel so you know he could be king. But in verse number three it says, "And he came 00:55:23.890 --> 00:55:30.540 to the sheep-cots, by the way, where was a cave. And Saul went in to cover his feet. And David and 00:55:30.540 --> 00:55:38.790 his men remained in the sides of the cave. And the men of David said unto him, Behold, the day of 00:55:38.790 --> 00:55:47.340 which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemies into thine hand, that thou 00:55:47.340 --> 00:55:55.910 mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's 00:55:55.910 --> 00:56:02.940 robe privily. So, you know, David could have killed Saul, but instead he just cuts off a piece, or 00:56:02.940 --> 00:56:09.160 cuts off, sorry, the skirt of Saul's robe. And he just cuts off a piece of Saul's skirt there, 00:56:09.160 --> 00:56:13.980 and, you know, a piece of clothing, and doesn't kill him. And it says in verse number five, 00:56:13.980 --> 00:56:21.350 just doing this, hurt David. It says, "And it came to pass afterward that David's heart smote him, 00:56:21.350 --> 00:56:27.160 because he had cut off Saul's skirt." So, because he cut a piece of Saul's clothing off, 00:56:27.160 --> 00:56:32.250 David's heart smote him, and he felt bad, and he obviously wished he wouldn't have done it. 00:56:32.250 --> 00:56:38.250 And in verse number six says, "And he said unto his men, 'The Lord forbid that I should do this 00:56:38.250 --> 00:56:45.080 thing. Unto my master the Lord's anointed to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the 00:56:45.080 --> 00:56:51.220 anointed of the Lord.'" So obviously 99% of men in the world, right, if you had a father-in-law like 00:56:51.220 --> 00:56:57.430 this trying to throw javelins at you, took, you know, the wife back and gave it to another guy, 00:56:57.430 --> 00:57:04.750 like 99% of people would have probably smote Saul there and had no feeling about doing it, right? But 00:57:04.750 --> 00:57:11.220 it just shows us that David is just a great man. He's got tons of patience. It doesn't matter what 00:57:11.220 --> 00:57:16.430 afflictions Saul wants to throw at him. It doesn't matter what Saul wants to do to him. 00:57:16.430 --> 00:57:22.790 David calls him his master and doesn't want to harm him in any way. And if you'd flip over to 00:57:22.790 --> 00:57:36.710 1 Samuel 31 verse number 3, 1 Samuel 31, David wants to let God, you know, judge Saul. He wants 00:57:36.710 --> 00:57:42.330 to let God take Saul out in God's time. He doesn't want to be the one to stretch forth his hand 00:57:42.330 --> 00:57:48.950 against the Lord's anointed. And even after Saul dies, most people, if they wouldn't have slew Saul, 00:57:48.950 --> 00:57:52.430 they would have been like, "Man, you know, my father-in-law is finally out of the picture. 00:57:52.430 --> 00:58:00.930 That dude is crazy." But instead of that, David has an attitude of feeling bad for Saul and actually 00:58:00.930 --> 00:58:08.180 avenging, you know, this guy tells a lie, but he avenges what he thinks in his mind as the guy who 00:58:08.180 --> 00:58:15.540 took out Saul. So in 1 Samuel 31 verse number three, it says, "And the battle went sore against Saul, 00:58:15.540 --> 00:58:23.890 and the archers hit him, and he was sore wounded of the archers. Then said Saul unto his armor bearer, 00:58:23.890 --> 00:58:31.050 'Draw thy sword and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through 00:58:31.050 --> 00:58:37.980 and abuse me.' But his armor bearer would not, for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword 00:58:37.980 --> 00:58:43.270 and fell upon it." So we hear, hey, Saul committed suicide, right? And obviously Saul still went to 00:58:43.270 --> 00:58:49.140 heaven, so you know a lot of people think suicide sends somebody to hell, but obviously, you know, 00:58:49.140 --> 00:58:53.430 it's not true because once you're saved you're always saved, and Saul fell upon a sword here. 00:58:53.430 --> 00:59:00.270 But obviously Saul killed himself, so the guy who says he killed Saul, it wasn't true. Saul died by 00:59:00.960 --> 00:59:07.520 suicide. And in verse number five it says, "And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, 00:59:07.520 --> 00:59:13.590 he fell likewise upon his sword and died with him." So Saul died and his three sons and his 00:59:13.590 --> 00:59:21.460 armor-bearer and his men that same day together. So, you know, David didn't have to take Saul out. 00:59:21.460 --> 00:59:26.480 David didn't have to avenge himself. He didn't have to do any self-defense when Saul threw the 00:59:26.480 --> 00:59:31.430 javelin and, you know, pull out his bow and arrow and shoot Saul and be like, "Well, he's self-defense 00:59:31.430 --> 00:59:39.680 right, Second Amendment." He just allowed Saul to do whatever he wanted and he just escaped and would 00:59:39.680 --> 00:59:46.850 come back and escape, come back and allowed God to take him out and trusted God to take care of 00:59:46.850 --> 00:59:53.800 Saul. And he just had the patience to suffer that affliction and tribulation in his life and just do 00:59:53.800 --> 01:00:05.920 the best he could in that situation. So you guys can flip over to 2nd Samuel chapter 1. 01:00:05.920 --> 01:00:18.510 I'm going to read one verse from Proverbs 20 verse 22. It says, "Say not thou I will recompense evil, 01:00:18.510 --> 01:00:23.840 but wait on the Lord and he shall save thee." So that's the same thing we've seen in David's 01:00:23.840 --> 01:00:31.210 life, right? I mean David didn't have to recompense evil. He waited on the Lord and God saved him out 01:00:31.210 --> 01:00:37.680 of that. So in 2 Samuel 1 verse number 11 we're going to see David's attitude when he found out 01:00:37.680 --> 01:00:44.890 Saul died and see if he was glad and happy that Saul was taken out who's his enemy, who's literally 01:00:44.890 --> 01:00:51.500 causing like all the problems in David's life. It says in 2 Samuel 1 verse 11 it says, "Then David 01:00:51.500 --> 01:00:58.900 took hold on his clothes and rent them and likewise all the men that were with him and they mourned 01:00:58.900 --> 01:01:06.700 and wept and fasted until even for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord 01:01:06.700 --> 01:01:12.880 and for the house of Israel because they were fallen by the sword." So you know he wasn't hoping 01:01:12.880 --> 01:01:19.570 and praying and wanting God to just kill him and judge him and you know he had the exact opposite. 01:01:19.570 --> 01:01:26.790 He was sad, he was mourning, he didn't want bad things to happen to Saul and especially you know 01:01:26.790 --> 01:01:32.840 when you sin other people are going to be affected right and David maybe you know even if he did not 01:01:32.840 --> 01:01:38.380 like Saul he loved Jonathan and guess what Jonathan died right so you know David loved 01:01:38.380 --> 01:01:43.130 Jonathan so much where he probably wished like even if he did hate Saul he'd be like as long as 01:01:43.130 --> 01:01:49.400 Jonathan didn't die I don't care what happens you know like it's a bad thing when when people sin
