01:25.700 --> 01:27.540
Is the offering place going around?

01:27.540 --> 01:32.940
Would you please turn your Bibles to Jeremiah chapter number 38, the book of Jeremiah chapter

01:32.940 --> 01:33.620
number 38.

02:41.900 --> 02:48.780
Jeremiah chapter number 38. The Bible says, Then Shefataiah the son of Matan and Gedaliah the son of

02:48.780 --> 02:55.420
Pasher and Jucal the son of Shelamiah and Pasher the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah

02:55.420 --> 03:01.500
had spoken unto all the people saying, Thus saith the Lord, he that remaineth in this city shall die

03:01.500 --> 03:07.500
by the sword, by the famine and by the pestilence. But he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live.

03:08.100 --> 03:11.940
for he shall have his life, for I pray and shall live.

03:11.940 --> 03:17.460
Thus saith the Lord, this city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army,

03:17.460 --> 03:23.460
which shall take it. Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be

03:23.460 --> 03:29.220
put to death, for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city,

03:29.220 --> 03:32.900
and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them.

03:33.300 --> 03:37.460
For this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

03:37.460 --> 03:41.060
Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand.

03:41.060 --> 03:44.260
For the king is not he that can do anything against you.

03:46.980 --> 03:51.460
Then took they Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hamilach

03:51.460 --> 03:55.700
that was in the court of the prison. And they let down Jeremiah with cords.

03:55.700 --> 04:00.660
And in the dungeon there was no water but mire. So Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

04:01.300 --> 04:05.940
Now when Ibed-Malek the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was of the king's house,

04:05.940 --> 04:11.300
heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon, the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin,

04:11.300 --> 04:15.460
Ibed-Malek went forth out of the king's house and spake to the king saying,

04:15.460 --> 04:20.660
My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet,

04:20.660 --> 04:25.540
whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is,

04:26.340 --> 04:28.180
for there is no more bread in the city.

04:28.900 --> 04:32.420
Then the king commanded Ibed-Malek the Ethiopian, saying,

04:32.420 --> 04:38.340
Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he died.

04:38.340 --> 04:43.620
So Ibed-Malek took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury,

04:43.620 --> 04:51.220
and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

04:52.000 --> 04:54.960
And Edbed-Malek the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah,

04:54.960 --> 04:57.760
Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags

04:57.760 --> 05:00.120
under thine armholes under the cords.

05:00.120 --> 05:01.840
And Jeremiah did so.

05:01.840 --> 05:04.080
So they drew up Jeremiah with cords

05:04.080 --> 05:06.160
and took him out of the dungeon,

05:06.160 --> 05:08.600
and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

05:09.800 --> 05:12.720
Then Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet

05:12.720 --> 05:14.640
unto him into the third entry

05:14.640 --> 05:16.100
that is in the house of the Lord.

05:16.300 --> 05:21.260
And the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing, hide nothing from me.

05:21.260 --> 05:27.180
Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, if I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death?

05:27.180 --> 05:30.940
And if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?

05:30.940 --> 05:37.820
So Zedekiah the king swears secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the Lord liveth that made us this soul,

05:37.820 --> 05:42.460
I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

05:43.700 --> 05:45.700
Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah,

05:45.700 --> 05:49.500
Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel,

05:49.500 --> 05:53.900
If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes,

05:53.900 --> 05:58.500
Then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire,

05:58.500 --> 06:00.800
And thou shalt live and thine house.

06:00.800 --> 06:04.300
But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes,

06:04.300 --> 06:07.400
Then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans,

06:07.400 --> 06:11.700
And they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

06:12.500 --> 06:15.100
And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah,

06:15.100 --> 06:18.540
I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans,

06:18.540 --> 06:21.900
lest they deliver me into their hand and they mock me.

06:21.900 --> 06:24.740
But Jeremiah said, they shall not deliver thee.

06:24.740 --> 06:27.380
Obey, I beseech thee the voice of the Lord,

06:27.380 --> 06:28.940
which I speak unto thee.

06:28.940 --> 06:32.940
So it shall be well unto thee and thy soul shall live.

06:32.940 --> 06:35.460
But if thou refuse to go forth,

06:35.460 --> 06:37.600
this is the word that the Lord has showed me.

06:38.000 --> 06:45.000
And behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes.

06:45.000 --> 06:49.740
And those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee.

06:49.740 --> 06:53.820
Thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.

06:53.820 --> 07:00.820
So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

07:00.900 --> 07:05.860
but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon, and thou shalt cause this city to be

07:05.860 --> 07:12.020
burned with fire. Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, let no man know of these words,

07:12.020 --> 07:17.060
and thou shalt not die. But if the prince is here that I have talked with thee, and they come unto

07:17.060 --> 07:22.260
thee and say unto thee, declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us,

07:22.260 --> 07:25.780
and we will not put thee to death. Also what the king said unto thee,

07:26.600 --> 07:31.960
Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would

07:31.960 --> 07:36.280
not cause me to return to Jonathan's house to die there.

07:36.280 --> 07:40.160
Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah and asked him, and he told them according to all

07:40.160 --> 07:42.460
these words that the king had commanded.

07:42.460 --> 07:46.300
So they left off speaking with him, for the matter was not perceived.

07:46.300 --> 07:51.200
So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken, and

07:51.200 --> 07:53.000
he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

07:53.000 --> 07:53.680
Let us pray.

07:55.100 --> 07:57.300
Dear Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for this day.

07:57.300 --> 07:59.540
I thank you for the souls that were saved today.

07:59.540 --> 08:04.220
Father, I thank you for St. Fast Baptist Church, and I ask you to please bless the preacher

08:04.220 --> 08:06.140
that will be delivering your word to us now.

08:06.140 --> 08:08.100
Please fill him with your Holy Spirit.

08:08.100 --> 08:10.140
Please also give Pastor Shelley safe travels back home.

08:10.140 --> 08:11.140
In Jesus' name, amen.

08:11.140 --> 08:12.140
Amen.

08:12.140 --> 08:17.140
I want to thank Pastor Shelley for the invitation to preach here in the evening service.

08:17.140 --> 08:20.060
We're starting in Jeremiah 38.

08:20.060 --> 08:22.460
We're going to leave it and come back to it momentarily, but...

08:23.000 --> 08:24.600
I want to just set the stage here.

08:24.600 --> 08:25.600
Look at verse 6.

08:25.600 --> 08:34.480
Then took they Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah, the son of Hamalech,

08:34.480 --> 08:35.720
that was in the court of the prison.

08:35.720 --> 08:38.360
And they let down Jeremiah with cords.

08:38.360 --> 08:41.640
And in the dungeon there was no water but mire.

08:41.640 --> 08:43.520
So Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

08:43.900 --> 08:48.700
Now the thing about Jeremiah is that he preached judgment against Judah.

08:48.700 --> 08:54.300
And what he was talking about is the fact that because of their evil, wickedness, and

08:54.300 --> 08:59.620
their sin, and their spiritual adultery, and all the sins that they committed, you know,

08:59.620 --> 09:01.460
the Bible tells us there was no remedy.

09:01.460 --> 09:07.580
It got to a point where the Babylonians were going to invade and occupy the land, and they

09:07.580 --> 09:09.600
they were gonna disperse.

09:10.100 --> 09:15.100
the Jews and many would be taken captive as well for 70 years.

09:15.100 --> 09:24.100
Now the thing is, is this message that Jeremiah preached was unpopular because of the fact that his fellow countrymen

09:24.400 --> 09:28.000
They looked at it like, hold on a minute, which side are you on?

09:28.000 --> 09:32.400
And they accused him of weakening the hands of the men of war through his message.

09:32.400 --> 09:37.700
The point is that he preached truth and he faced opposition for preaching truth.

09:37.700 --> 09:40.000
To the point that he was physically afflicted.

09:40.000 --> 09:42.000
He was persecuted for it.

09:42.000 --> 09:43.400
For preaching judgment.

09:43.400 --> 09:47.000
For talking about the coming Babylonian captivity.

09:47.000 --> 09:51.600
And the princes of the land are angered as a result of this.

09:52.000 --> 09:57.800
And they didn't want to hear this because folks, this is the cost of preaching truth is you're going to be afflicted.

09:57.800 --> 09:59.300
You're going to be persecuted.

09:59.300 --> 10:02.000
You'll have enemies coming against you.

10:02.000 --> 10:03.700
And Jeremiah was no exception.

10:03.700 --> 10:07.700
And it made Jeremiah like someone.

10:07.700 --> 10:15.100
It made him like Jesus, in fact, because Jesus made many enemies for preaching the truth and doing good.

10:15.100 --> 10:16.000
and

10:16.200 --> 10:18.200
Who were those enemies? The Jews.

10:18.200 --> 10:23.800
And in the same way, Jeremiah made enemies of his own countrymen of Judah, the Jews.

10:23.800 --> 10:28.760
In the same way, there are so many parallels between Jeremiah and Jesus,

10:28.760 --> 10:34.040
and specifically in this chapter, we see what I think are some of the more powerful pictures

10:34.040 --> 10:38.360
of Christ as Jeremiah sinks in the mire.

10:38.360 --> 10:43.160
How in the world does he find himself in this situation?

10:43.900 --> 10:48.860
Well, I'll expound a little bit more on that, but the title of my sermon is Jesus in the

10:48.860 --> 10:51.260
life of Jeremiah.

10:51.260 --> 10:53.020
Jesus in the life of Jeremiah.

10:53.020 --> 11:00.940
Now, because of the enormity of the subject, and there are so many types that I could cover,

11:00.940 --> 11:03.540
I'm just going to look at this from a macro perspective.

11:03.900 --> 11:08.400
and talk about how Jeremiah pictures Jesus.

11:08.400 --> 11:11.100
And then we'll come back to Jeremiah 38

11:11.100 --> 11:14.700
and really dive into it from a New Testament perspective

11:14.700 --> 11:16.700
through the lenses of what we know

11:16.700 --> 11:18.300
that the New Testament says

11:18.300 --> 11:21.300
and what Jesus did, the gospel of Christ.

11:21.300 --> 11:23.400
That's how you should read the Old Testament,

11:23.400 --> 11:25.900
is trying to find Jesus on every page.

11:25.900 --> 11:27.300
And Jeremiah for sure...

11:28.100 --> 11:31.200
you know, you'll find Jesus practically on every page,

11:31.200 --> 11:33.800
and especially, I think, in chapter 38.

11:33.800 --> 11:35.600
So we'll get back to it, but first of all,

11:35.600 --> 11:37.300
let's look at some background here.

11:37.300 --> 11:39.100
Who is Jeremiah?

11:39.100 --> 11:42.900
And we'll start in Jeremiah 1, Jeremiah chapter 1.

11:42.900 --> 11:44.800
So he's the son of Hilkiah.

11:44.800 --> 11:46.600
He is a prophet of God.

11:46.600 --> 11:50.200
He preached an unpopular message,

11:50.200 --> 11:51.800
and he was hated for it.

11:52.700 --> 12:00.220
Now the words of the Lord come to him in the 13th year of Josiah's reign and it continues through

12:01.500 --> 12:09.420
through Jehoiakim and Zedekiah and then through all the way to the carrying away of the children of

12:09.420 --> 12:16.540
Judah. Now here in the very first chapter you don't have to go far before you see the first way

12:16.540 --> 12:20.060
that Jeremiah pictures Jesus. Let's look at verse four.

12:20.500 --> 12:23.440
Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

12:23.440 --> 12:27.240
Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee,

12:27.240 --> 12:31.140
and before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee.

12:31.140 --> 12:36.540
And notice this here, I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

12:36.540 --> 12:41.340
So the calling of Jeremiah is something that occurred.

12:41.340 --> 12:44.740
The Bible is saying even before he was in the womb.

12:45.000 --> 12:51.000
And before he came out of the womb, he's ordained to be a prophet.

12:51.000 --> 12:54.000
How is this possible? The foreknowledge of God.

12:54.000 --> 13:00.000
Now in the same way, Jeremiah had a calling before he came forth from the womb.

13:00.000 --> 13:07.000
Well, the Lord Jesus Christ also had a calling before he came forth from the womb as well.

13:07.000 --> 13:10.600
And what was his calling that he would be the Savior of the world?

13:11.200 --> 13:14.500
and especially those who believe, the Bible says.

13:14.500 --> 13:19.400
There was a call and a plan for Jesus, like Jeremiah,

13:19.400 --> 13:21.900
before he came forth from the womb.

13:21.900 --> 13:27.300
Now, of course, the difference being Jesus always existed.

13:27.700 --> 13:31.140
And obviously I'm not making that case for Jeremiah.

13:31.140 --> 13:33.300
Jesus is eternally existent.

13:33.300 --> 13:34.980
He's from everlasting.

13:34.980 --> 13:37.060
He's always been the son of God.

13:37.060 --> 13:40.340
He's always been the second person of the Trinity.

13:40.340 --> 13:42.420
He's always been a man, the Bible says.

13:43.140 --> 13:44.580
He's always existent.

13:44.580 --> 13:46.980
Jesus Christ is eternally existent.

13:46.980 --> 13:52.740
But we see that there are there were many prophecies concerning his ministry in the

13:52.740 --> 13:53.460
Old Testament.

13:53.460 --> 13:55.000
One of them...

13:55.400 --> 14:00.400
would, I think, pertain to the fact that he's Abraham's seed in Genesis 12.

14:00.400 --> 14:04.400
Galatians 3 acts as a commentary on that,

14:04.400 --> 14:07.400
that Jesus is the true fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant.

14:07.400 --> 14:09.400
He is Abraham's seed.

14:09.400 --> 14:15.400
And there was a calling on him that existed before he put on mortal flesh.

14:15.400 --> 14:17.400
That's the point I'm trying to make.

14:17.400 --> 14:20.400
Now let's look at Lamentations 3. Lamentations 3.

14:21.500 --> 14:29.500
So right off the bat, there's similarities that exist between Jeremiah and Jesus.

14:29.500 --> 14:35.500
And here's another one. We see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah through his emotion.

14:35.500 --> 14:38.500
Okay? Through his emotion.

14:38.500 --> 14:41.500
As you turn to Lamentations 3, I'll read this for you.

14:41.500 --> 14:45.500
Jeremiah said, Oh, that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears

14:45.500 --> 14:48.300
that I might weep day and night for the slain.

14:48.400 --> 14:53.480
He's known as the weeping prophet because he just openly admits that he's weeping for

14:53.480 --> 14:58.520
the slain, for those who he knew were going to be judged by God.

14:58.520 --> 15:04.360
He did preach a negative message for sure and that affected him.

15:04.360 --> 15:05.300
He kind of felt...

15:05.800 --> 15:13.120
very emotional about this and and he felt agony about Jerusalem's future judgment and in Lamentations 3

15:13.120 --> 15:19.440
We see the same thing where the Bible said in verse 48. Let's look at verse 48 together

15:20.320 --> 15:27.480
Mine I runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people

15:27.720 --> 15:29.840
He knew what their end would be

15:30.500 --> 15:32.800
and he was upset about it.

15:32.800 --> 15:36.100
Now that's why he's referred to as the weeping prophet.

15:36.100 --> 15:37.600
It says in the next verse,

15:37.600 --> 15:40.100
I trickle it down and cease it not

15:40.100 --> 15:42.400
without any intermission.

15:42.400 --> 15:47.100
So he's weeping, he's crying, is what I mean by that,

15:47.100 --> 15:50.600
because of the future destruction that would come to Jerusalem,

15:50.600 --> 15:51.800
and it ceases not.

15:51.800 --> 15:53.200
There's no intermission.

15:54.500 --> 15:56.500
He's not taking a break is what he's saying.

15:56.500 --> 15:59.700
It's like he's really emotional about what's going on.

15:59.700 --> 16:00.700
He feels heartbreak.

16:00.700 --> 16:03.400
He feels sorrow.

16:03.400 --> 16:05.320
And we see the same thing with Jesus.

16:05.320 --> 16:07.600
Look at Luke chapter 19 and I'll show you.

16:09.900 --> 16:12.200
what I mean by that, Luke chapter 19.

16:14.100 --> 16:15.500
Now, what does this mean for us?

16:17.100 --> 16:17.700
You know,

16:18.900 --> 16:21.300
I think that it is appropriate

16:22.100 --> 16:25.700
to feel a certain kind of sorrow and sadness for the lost.

16:26.200 --> 16:26.600
Okay.

16:27.900 --> 16:29.300
Because the reality is,

16:29.500 --> 16:32.300
the vast majority of people are going to hell.

16:33.200 --> 16:34.100
Broad is the way.

16:35.600 --> 16:39.200
And, you know, Brother Furr mentioned this in the morning service,

16:39.200 --> 16:43.600
and I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I kind of, you know, talked about it too, all right?

16:44.160 --> 16:45.360
Ripped him off a little bit here.

16:46.400 --> 16:51.600
But, you know, he said like, hey, if you're struggling to have zeal for soul winning,

16:51.600 --> 16:54.960
why don't you think about the faces that are going to end up in hell

16:54.960 --> 16:56.560
because you didn't preach them the gospel?

16:57.120 --> 16:58.880
And look, I want to echo that sentiment.

16:58.880 --> 17:00.320
I want to say the exact same thing.

17:01.200 --> 17:04.720
And by the way, I was going to say it regardless of what he preached, all right?

17:06.240 --> 17:13.360
But seriously, if you're lacking in your zeal for soul winning, if you find yourself struggling

17:14.000 --> 17:19.280
to feel excited about preaching the gospel, then maybe you need to be a little bit more

17:19.280 --> 17:24.400
sorrowful about all the souls who are going to die and go straight to hell for all of eternity.

17:24.900 --> 17:30.500
Maybe you need to be a little bit more sorrowful about that neighbor living right next to you that you haven't given the gospel to yet.

17:30.500 --> 17:40.500
Maybe you need to feel sorrowful about the communities in South Dallas and some of these cities that we're going to here as a church that have yet to be reached by the gospel of Christ

17:40.500 --> 17:45.900
and be sorrowful about the fact that the vast majority of those people are going to die and go to hell

17:45.900 --> 17:51.500
and that they are just waiting for you to knock on their door to preach them the gospel of Jesus Christ.

17:52.000 --> 17:54.900
You'll feel sorry about that and sad about that.

17:54.900 --> 17:58.900
Feel sad for the unsaved and it'll help you with your zeal for soul winning.

17:58.900 --> 18:02.820
I think we should also feel some sadness for

18:02.820 --> 18:06.300
individual unsaved people we know in our life.

18:06.300 --> 18:09.740
You know one person I can think of that immediately comes to mind

18:09.740 --> 18:14.460
would be my father and I did literally weep for him but when I prayed to God and

18:14.460 --> 18:16.200
I asked him...

18:16.500 --> 18:20.180
vehemently to give me an opportunity to get him saved.

18:20.180 --> 18:24.740
I just wanted to open that door because I know how powerful the word of God is.

18:24.740 --> 18:29.300
And I just wanted 10 minutes to preach him the gospel.

18:29.300 --> 18:33.780
He's an advanced age, I'll say.

18:33.780 --> 18:35.540
That means he's old, folks, all right?

18:35.540 --> 18:39.540
And the thing is, like, you know, when somebody's at that stage of their life...

18:40.100 --> 18:44.500
you start to worry, because I'm not trying to scare old people,

18:44.500 --> 18:47.100
but you know, who knows, maybe something could go wrong.

18:47.100 --> 18:51.100
And so I prayed about it, I wept over it,

18:51.100 --> 18:54.900
I really wanted the opportunity, I just needed 10 minutes with them,

18:54.900 --> 19:00.700
and you do, you feel sorrow, and you feel kind of pain and agony and emotion over it,

19:00.700 --> 19:04.000
but praise the Lord, He did answer that prayer a few years ago,

19:04.000 --> 19:06.200
and I was able to get Him saved.

19:06.200 --> 19:07.100
But I would just...

19:07.900 --> 19:13.400
I would just encourage you if you struggle with zeal for soul winning, this could be the missing link.

19:13.400 --> 19:19.700
Now look at Luke 19 and verse 41 and we'll see a parallel with Jesus himself, Luke 19 and verse 41.

19:20.500 --> 19:21.300
The Bible says there,

19:21.300 --> 19:25.700
And when he was come near, he beheld the city and wept over it.

19:26.200 --> 19:34.200
Just as Jeremiah wept over Jerusalem, Jesus, excuse me, Jesus does the same exact thing.

19:34.800 --> 19:40.240
And he weeps over Jerusalem because we know it would end up being compassed about with armies.

19:40.240 --> 19:46.000
And it was Jeremiah who preached against, I should say he preached about the coming

19:46.000 --> 19:51.440
Babylonian captivity and it was Jesus who pointed to the Roman Empire invading.

19:51.440 --> 19:54.960
And these be the days of vengeance, he says in Luke 21.

19:54.960 --> 20:00.720
And he weeps over Jerusalem because he knows that they are going to end up getting that judgment.

20:02.600 --> 20:08.840
Basically, he realizes and he understands there's a future annihilation coming.

20:08.840 --> 20:12.480
And both men understood this and it made them emotional.

20:12.480 --> 20:16.160
So we see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah through his emotion.

20:16.700 --> 20:21.740
And look, you know what? Not only do I think it's appropriate for us to apply this in the context of

20:21.740 --> 20:27.260
salvations and getting people saved and reaching the lost and being sad about the fact that most

20:27.260 --> 20:32.620
people are going to hell, but you know what? I also think, you know, it is appropriate to feel some

20:32.620 --> 20:39.420
sorrow about the spiritual state of America today. The fact that this country, by and large,

20:40.000 --> 20:43.440
You know, has embraced iniquity rather than righteousness.

20:43.440 --> 20:46.080
The fact that it's rejected the word of God.

20:46.080 --> 20:51.840
The fact that in our society today, we have exalted the vilest of men.

20:51.840 --> 20:55.600
And in Psalm 12, we know that when we do that, the wicked walk on every side.

20:55.600 --> 21:00.560
And make no mistake about it, the wicked are walking on every side in America.

21:00.560 --> 21:02.880
And that's something to feel emotional about.

21:04.240 --> 21:05.360
Look at who we're electing.

21:06.200 --> 21:08.680
Look at the cast of characters in Washington, DC.

21:08.680 --> 21:09.960
It makes me want to vomit.

21:09.960 --> 21:10.760
It's so bad.

21:10.760 --> 21:11.560
It's so awful.

21:13.160 --> 21:15.640
This is the representative leadership that we have.

21:16.520 --> 21:18.520
A bunch of insider trading,

21:20.680 --> 21:27.240
beholden to Jews, puppets that have rejected the word of God and righteousness

21:27.240 --> 21:32.920
and have embraced just the worst evils that I can't even describe.

21:33.800 --> 21:35.800
And that's worth getting upset about.

21:35.800 --> 21:39.000
It is worth weeping over America as a result of that.

21:39.000 --> 21:40.440
Let's go back to Jeremiah.

21:40.440 --> 21:42.840
We'll look at chapter seven now, Jeremiah chapter seven.

21:44.280 --> 21:48.280
Now, what's another way that we see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah?

21:48.280 --> 21:48.920
How about this?

21:48.920 --> 21:52.600
We see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah through his preaching.

21:54.200 --> 21:55.640
And I could spend all day on this.

21:55.640 --> 21:56.840
There's so many.

21:57.900 --> 22:03.400
comparisons that can be made between the preaching of Jeremiah and the preaching

22:03.400 --> 22:08.760
of Jesus and in particular I wanted to highlight this one. Jeremiah 7 look at

22:08.760 --> 22:14.380
verse 11 Jeremiah 7 and verse 11 the Bible reads there is this house which is

22:14.380 --> 22:20.440
called by my name become a den of robbers in your eyes behold even I have

22:20.440 --> 22:22.900
seen it saith the Lord

22:23.500 --> 22:31.900
So he's rebuking Jerusalem for embracing sin, exercising what you could describe as empty religion,

22:32.700 --> 22:39.500
meaningless, trying to say good things about God with their mouth, but then in their behavior,

22:40.200 --> 22:41.500
doing the complete opposite.

22:42.600 --> 22:45.000
But he also mentions that

22:45.300 --> 22:48.800
The house of God has become a den of robbers.

22:48.800 --> 22:50.700
And that sounds a lot like what Jesus said.

22:50.700 --> 22:52.700
Let's look at it in Matthew chapter 21.

22:52.700 --> 22:54.800
Matthew chapter 21.

22:54.800 --> 22:59.400
The thing about the Jews at this time is that they thought that the building itself

22:59.400 --> 23:02.800
would somehow shield their own immorality.

23:02.800 --> 23:03.800
That's not the case.

23:03.800 --> 23:05.800
God saw what they were doing.

23:05.900 --> 23:09.400
God saw all the evils that they were partaking in,

23:09.400 --> 23:13.300
and in particular, Jeremiah laments the fact

23:13.300 --> 23:18.700
that the house of God had become a den of robbers

23:18.700 --> 23:22.400
in this preaching right here in Jeremiah chapter 7.

23:22.400 --> 23:26.300
It is a condemnation of hypocrisy.

23:26.300 --> 23:28.300
And Jesus does the same thing.

23:28.300 --> 23:31.100
In Matthew 21, we'll look at verse 12,

23:31.100 --> 23:33.100
and we'll see how they're preaching.

23:33.300 --> 23:34.900
mirror each other.

23:35.200 --> 23:39.360
And I would argue he's actually quoting Jeremiah here, but look at Matthew 21 in verse 12.

23:40.080 --> 23:46.000
Verse 12 it says, and Jesus went into the temple of God and cast out all them that sold and bought

23:46.000 --> 23:52.400
in the temple and overthrew the tables of the money changers and the seats of them that sold doves

23:52.400 --> 23:57.920
and said unto them, it is written, my house shall be called the house of prayer, but ye have made it

23:57.920 --> 24:00.440
a den of thieves.

24:00.440 --> 24:02.160
Jeremiah refers to.

24:02.600 --> 24:06.360
What the Jews did to the house of God, turning it into a den of robbers.

24:06.360 --> 24:10.360
And Jesus says that they've made it a den of thieves.

24:10.360 --> 24:14.040
Spiritually speaking, he's talking to the same group.

24:14.040 --> 24:19.000
The spiritual descendants of those that Jeremiah was preaching against.

24:19.000 --> 24:21.880
Back in his time, Jesus is talking to them.

24:21.880 --> 24:25.080
He says, you've turned the house of God into a den of thieves.

24:25.600 --> 24:30.320
And this is wildly inappropriate, obviously, to do in the house of God.

24:31.040 --> 24:34.640
And he overthrows the tables because of this.

24:35.280 --> 24:37.600
So this goes to show you that, hey, you know what?

24:38.320 --> 24:45.040
Jeremiah, for sure, you can read the book and you'll see that he gets scathing angry at times.

24:46.240 --> 24:50.000
Well, you know what? Jesus got angry as well during his earthly ministry.

24:50.000 --> 24:51.920
He wasn't some hippie with long hair.

24:52.700 --> 24:56.540
like the orthodox make him out to be with a lazy eye.

24:56.540 --> 24:58.700
No, he actually did get angry.

24:58.700 --> 25:00.260
He actually did preach against sin,

25:00.260 --> 25:02.580
and he preached against those who turned the house of God

25:02.580 --> 25:04.740
into a house of merchandise.

25:04.740 --> 25:06.180
He overthrows the tables.

25:06.180 --> 25:07.100
He chases them out.

25:07.100 --> 25:12.180
This was unjust gain, and unjust gain makes Jesus angry.

25:12.700 --> 25:14.540
It makes God angry.

25:14.540 --> 25:16.620
It made Jeremiah angry.

25:16.620 --> 25:20.300
And yet, churches today, even though that passage,

25:20.300 --> 25:23.820
you also have John 2, you have other accounts in the Gospels

25:23.820 --> 25:27.500
that show that you shouldn't be buying or selling in the house of God.

25:27.500 --> 25:32.380
But in spite of that, churches today still flagrantly violate this

25:32.380 --> 25:35.020
and they buy and sell things inside the church.

25:35.820 --> 25:38.140
It's amazing to me that this occurs.

25:38.900 --> 25:42.900
You've got churches today that literally will charge you for tracts.

25:46.300 --> 25:51.100
Why? I thought we're supposed to empower people to preach the gospel.

25:52.100 --> 25:54.900
And the way some of us grab tracks, that would be really expensive.

25:58.000 --> 25:59.500
I've seen how some and me too.

25:59.700 --> 26:02.800
I seen how, you know, we're literally just like grabbing a whole thing.

26:02.900 --> 26:04.900
What is that? $100 worth of tracks or something?

26:04.900 --> 26:06.400
Like how much are they charging?

26:06.400 --> 26:07.500
I'm not even sure.

26:07.600 --> 26:09.700
But the fact is this does happen.

26:10.300 --> 26:16.700
You've got churches today where in spite of the clear condemnation of turning the house of God into a house of merchandise,

26:16.700 --> 26:20.000
you see it in Jeremiah, we also see it with Jesus.

26:20.000 --> 26:25.600
In spite of that though, you've got churches that'll sell books in the church service.

26:25.600 --> 26:33.700
Even worse, they'll sell books that are just nothing more than Israeli propaganda in the church service.

26:34.500 --> 26:40.420
how God's blessing Israel today, how, you know, God will bless America if we give money to Israel today,

26:40.420 --> 26:42.180
a bunch of Christ-rejecting Jews.

26:42.180 --> 26:47.700
So it's like, not only are you violating what Jesus said about buying or selling things in the house of God,

26:47.700 --> 26:51.100
but then you're going to sell lies in God's house?

26:51.100 --> 26:54.940
You're going to profit from lies in God's house?

26:54.940 --> 26:57.660
Look, I personally feel that...

26:57.800 --> 27:02.360
There's no other way to practically apply this passage

27:02.360 --> 27:06.760
if buying or selling in the house of God is permitted.

27:06.760 --> 27:09.160
I just don't know how else you would apply it.

27:09.160 --> 27:12.840
And you know, the Bible says all scripture is profitable.

27:12.840 --> 27:16.440
So I would love to know what profit there is in reading a story like this

27:16.440 --> 27:20.280
if we can't actually practically apply it in our lives.

27:21.100 --> 27:24.780
There should not be any buying or selling going on in the house of God.

27:24.780 --> 27:31.100
It is not a house of merchandise, but unfortunately churches have turned themselves into that today.

27:31.100 --> 27:34.620
And make no mistake about it, it makes God very angry.

27:37.300 --> 27:42.100
Not only that, but Jeremiah and Jesus, they both prophesied of the fall of Jerusalem.

27:42.100 --> 27:47.780
I alluded to that a few minutes ago. Jesus famously does so in Luke 21.

27:48.500 --> 27:55.460
Jeremiah uses a no figs on the fig tree illustration, and then Jesus plays that out

27:55.460 --> 28:02.500
by cursing the fig tree. You have Jeremiah and Jesus both preaching about the destruction of

28:02.500 --> 28:04.100
of the temple that would come.

28:04.200 --> 28:08.500
Jeremiah talking about the destruction of the temple through the Babylonians,

28:08.500 --> 28:13.400
and Jesus talking about it through the Roman Empire in 70 AD.

28:13.400 --> 28:16.600
Jeremiah and Jesus both preached about the new covenant.

28:17.000 --> 28:22.280
Jeremiah 31 talks about this, that there would be a new covenant given to the house of Israel

28:22.280 --> 28:27.800
and the house of Judah. This is then quoted in Hebrews 8. And then Jesus talks about it,

28:27.800 --> 28:32.680
the new covenant. He said, this is the new covenant in my blood. So both of them preach about

28:32.680 --> 28:38.120
the new covenant. But here's something else you have to realize about Jeremiah and Jesus. I just

28:38.120 --> 28:43.160
gave you a few topics that they both touched on, but here's something else that both of them touch

28:43.160 --> 28:44.600
because again...

28:45.000 --> 28:51.000
We see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah through his preaching.

28:51.000 --> 28:52.600
Gave you some topics there.

28:52.600 --> 28:54.900
Here's something else they both talk about.

28:54.900 --> 28:58.000
A little something called vengeance.

28:58.000 --> 29:01.200
They both cover the topic of vengeance.

29:01.200 --> 29:04.500
They both preached vengeance.

29:04.500 --> 29:09.200
Both Jeremiah and Jesus both preached vengeance.

29:10.000 --> 29:11.800
And that leads me to my next point.

29:11.900 --> 29:14.600
We see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah

29:14.700 --> 29:19.140
through his prayers as well, through his prayers.

29:19.240 --> 29:24.180
Look at Jeremiah 18, Jeremiah chapter 18.

29:24.280 --> 29:28.480
Jeremiah wanted to see vengeance.

29:28.580 --> 29:32.480
And in chapter 20, he even gets a little bit frustrated

29:32.580 --> 29:33.400
about the fact that he was not going to see the Lord.

29:33.800 --> 29:38.520
the fact that it's taking a little while for him to be avenged.

29:38.520 --> 29:41.720
He talks about, hey, Lord, thou hast deceived me and I've been deceived.

29:41.720 --> 29:46.440
He talks about how he's been mocked and he's been ridiculed and he's been persecuted for preaching the truth.

29:46.440 --> 29:48.760
Just what God told him to preach.

29:49.600 --> 29:52.000
Jeremiah preached what God told him to,

29:52.000 --> 29:55.100
just as Jesus preached what the Father told him to.

29:55.100 --> 29:56.700
So there's another comparison there.

29:56.700 --> 30:00.500
But both of them cover the topic of vengeance,

30:00.500 --> 30:03.400
and in fact, the way that they articulate themselves

30:03.400 --> 30:07.500
about vengeance is very, very similar.

30:07.500 --> 30:12.400
Look at Jeremiah 18 and verse 19.

30:12.400 --> 30:14.600
In verse 19, the Bible reads there...

30:15.200 --> 30:18.000
Jeremiah 18 and verse 19, he says,

30:18.000 --> 30:22.100
Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them

30:22.100 --> 30:26.900
that contend with me, shall evil be recompensed for good,

30:26.900 --> 30:29.700
for they have digged a pit for my soul.

30:29.700 --> 30:32.400
Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them

30:32.400 --> 30:34.200
and to turn away thy wrath from them.

30:34.200 --> 30:37.800
So he's saying, look, these people, my countrymen...

30:38.000 --> 30:40.440
I asked you for mercy on these people,

30:40.440 --> 30:42.700
and yet they've returned evil for good.

30:42.700 --> 30:44.940
Think about how frustrating that is.

30:44.940 --> 30:47.840
Think about people in your life who you've done good to.

30:47.840 --> 30:50.240
You've blessed them. You've only done good to them.

30:50.240 --> 30:52.080
And then they stab you in the back.

30:52.080 --> 30:54.980
That's what Jeremiah feels like has happened to him.

30:54.980 --> 30:57.880
He feels betrayed by his own countrymen.

30:57.880 --> 31:01.820
Because like Jesus Christ, Jeremiah came unto his own,

31:01.820 --> 31:03.420
and his own received him not.

31:04.100 --> 31:06.500
He went to the Jews, they rejected him.

31:06.500 --> 31:09.460
The Bible literally says that the Jews killed their own prophets.

31:09.460 --> 31:13.940
They wanted to kill Jeremiah for preaching about judgment,

31:13.940 --> 31:17.140
the judgment to come, the righteous consequence for their sin.

31:18.660 --> 31:22.260
And like Jesus, hey, his own countrymen rejected him.

31:22.820 --> 31:24.740
And he was very upset about it.

31:24.740 --> 31:27.700
Said they've recompensed good for evil.

31:28.400 --> 31:30.100
Okay, I'm sorry, evil for good.

31:30.100 --> 31:32.100
Sorry, the recompense evil for good.

31:32.100 --> 31:33.400
Let's look at verse 21.

31:33.400 --> 31:38.100
Therefore deliver up their children to the famine,

31:38.100 --> 31:41.400
and pour out their blood by the force of the sword,

31:41.400 --> 31:44.700
and let their wives be bereaved of their children,

31:44.700 --> 31:48.300
and be widows, and let their men be put to death,

31:48.300 --> 31:52.500
let their young men be slayed by the sword in battle.

31:53.600 --> 31:56.400
So who's he talking to? The people of Anathoth, the priests.

31:57.360 --> 32:01.200
And he delivers a scathing prayer right here.

32:01.760 --> 32:07.920
Let their wives be bereaved of their children and be widows.

32:08.880 --> 32:11.920
The same people who plotted against the preacher,

32:11.920 --> 32:20.240
he is now asking God to be avenged of them by literally asking for these women to become widows.

32:21.700 --> 32:23.300
That's Bible tonight.

32:23.300 --> 32:24.800
You say, I don't like that.

32:24.800 --> 32:28.000
Then you just don't like the Bible.

32:28.000 --> 32:29.200
I don't know what else I could tell you.

32:29.200 --> 32:31.000
I'm literally just reading the scripture.

32:34.000 --> 32:37.000
And the thing is, you know, he's in deep distress.

32:37.000 --> 32:38.000
I get that.

32:38.000 --> 32:39.600
You know, he's appealing to God.

32:39.600 --> 32:41.520
But what is he appealing to God for?

32:41.520 --> 32:42.520
Calamities.

32:42.520 --> 32:43.520
Is he praying good?

32:43.520 --> 32:45.640
No, obviously not.

32:45.640 --> 32:47.360
He's praying for calamities to happen.

32:47.360 --> 32:49.640
He's praying for justice to happen.

32:49.640 --> 32:52.960
And here's the reality of the situation.

32:52.960 --> 32:54.560
This is just one place.

32:54.560 --> 32:59.840
Jeremiah's got a lot of other places where he's asking God to be avenged.

32:59.840 --> 33:00.840
All right.

33:01.200 --> 33:06.200
because it is a Christian act to pray for vengeance.

33:07.440 --> 33:11.840
It is a Christian act to ask God to avenge you.

33:11.840 --> 33:14.120
We don't avenge ourselves, I get that.

33:14.120 --> 33:15.440
But if we don't avenge ourselves,

33:15.440 --> 33:17.120
then there's gotta be somebody who avenges us

33:17.120 --> 33:19.200
on our behalf, it's God.

33:19.600 --> 33:21.100
And the Bible teaches that.

33:21.100 --> 33:25.600
And Jeremiah, in practice, is employing the principle

33:25.600 --> 33:27.100
that he's not going to avenge himself,

33:27.100 --> 33:29.900
but he's going to rely on God to do it for him.

33:29.900 --> 33:33.300
And that's why he asks for vengeance in this chapter

33:33.300 --> 33:35.500
in what some people would look at

33:35.500 --> 33:37.200
and kind of get uncomfortable with.

33:37.200 --> 33:38.000
But you know what?

33:38.000 --> 33:39.700
At the end of the day, we need to cast aside

33:39.700 --> 33:42.500
whatever our feelings may be and uphold the Word of God,

33:42.500 --> 33:44.500
whether we like it in the flesh or not.

33:47.900 --> 33:53.100
You know, allowing God to deal with those who oppose God's people, that is a Christian act.

33:54.780 --> 34:01.340
Okay, it is expected of us, it is the appropriate response to persecution to ask God to shut their

34:01.340 --> 34:10.380
mouth, to ask God to end it for us in whatever way he deems appropriate. What is this? It's called

34:10.380 --> 34:11.980
imprecatory prayer.

34:13.000 --> 34:17.080
Yeah, I know. There's a lot of people out there that laugh about this concept, and they

34:17.080 --> 34:21.800
make fun of me for praying this kind of prayer, and they make fun of you for praying this

34:21.800 --> 34:23.600
kind of prayer. They think it's funny.

34:24.700 --> 34:28.700
And they want to laugh about it and they want to mock it and they don't want to take it seriously

34:28.940 --> 34:32.560
But let me tell you something if you have a brain in your head

34:32.560 --> 34:38.460
And you know that there's a bunch of spirit-filled Christians who right now are praying for your demise

34:38.660 --> 34:40.660
Then you ought to be shaking in your boots

34:42.460 --> 34:48.240
You know that would make any normal person with a functioning mind actually afraid of what might happen to them

34:49.220 --> 34:51.580
But instead they make videos

34:52.300 --> 34:54.300
to laugh about it together.

34:54.940 --> 34:56.380
Because, let me tell you something,

34:56.380 --> 34:59.180
they have no fear of God whatsoever.

34:59.180 --> 35:02.540
The kind of person that laughs about imprecatory prayer

35:02.540 --> 35:04.380
and mocks it as a concept

35:04.380 --> 35:06.540
is essentially mocking the Word of God

35:06.540 --> 35:09.100
and has no fear of God at all.

35:10.060 --> 35:11.100
Zero. Done.

35:14.700 --> 35:19.260
So what is imprecatory prayer? To implicate, it's to call down curses.

35:20.140 --> 35:25.660
That's what it means to implicate. And judgment on someone.

35:26.780 --> 35:34.780
I wouldn't word an imprecatory prayer against a saved person in the exact same way as a reprobate.

35:34.780 --> 35:39.900
For example, you're not going to find me praying for a saved person to die and go to hell,

35:39.900 --> 35:41.340
for example. That's never going to happen.

35:41.800 --> 35:47.320
But you know what? It is appropriate, even if the person is saved, to ask God to avenge you.

35:47.320 --> 35:54.120
This is what Saul did. Excuse me, Saul. This is what David did against Saul when he said directly

35:54.120 --> 36:00.360
to him, the Lord avenge me of thee. That's what he said. If it's good enough for him, it's good

36:00.360 --> 36:02.680
enough for me. But in this instance,

36:03.000 --> 36:05.000
We're talking about a Judas Iscariot.

36:05.000 --> 36:07.500
We're talking about someone who's not even saved,

36:07.500 --> 36:11.000
and, you know, it is appropriate to call down

36:11.000 --> 36:14.500
a precatory prayer on them.

36:14.500 --> 36:18.900
This word imprecate, I believe it's evolved today.

36:18.900 --> 36:22.800
People use the term precarious now to mean,

36:22.800 --> 36:25.700
like, you're in a dangerous situation or something like that.

36:25.700 --> 36:28.000
But the original meaning of precarious...

36:28.300 --> 36:32.100
had to do with petitioning God, asking God for something.

36:32.100 --> 36:34.240
And that's what the word has evolved into.

36:34.240 --> 36:36.600
And this is Jeremiah's petition,

36:36.600 --> 36:41.500
is to let their wives be widows and bereaved.

36:41.500 --> 36:43.900
That's what he said.

36:43.900 --> 36:47.200
Now look at Psalm 109, Psalm 109.

36:47.200 --> 36:48.200
Again, what's the sermon?

36:48.200 --> 36:50.200
Jesus in the life of Jeremiah.

36:52.800 --> 36:58.960
I believe in Psalm 109 we can attribute this to Jesus himself.

37:00.160 --> 37:05.920
The Psalms can be messianic and what I mean by that is you could apply it to Christ.

37:08.100 --> 37:10.100
Sometimes they apply to David.

37:10.100 --> 37:13.900
They could there could also be dual fulfillment.

37:14.700 --> 37:18.300
And I think we see that you could argue that David is

37:18.300 --> 37:19.900
referring to a Hithophel here.

37:19.900 --> 37:22.700
But I think you could also apply it to the Lord Jesus Christ

37:22.700 --> 37:25.500
himself in the context of Judas.

37:26.000 --> 37:27.000
You say I don't believe you.

37:27.000 --> 37:30.900
Well, Psalm 109 is quoted in Acts 1 about Judas.

37:30.900 --> 37:31.500
All right.

37:31.500 --> 37:32.900
So there you go.

37:33.900 --> 37:35.900
But let's look at Psalm 109 and verse 7.

37:35.900 --> 37:39.340
Notice the similarity with Jeremiah 18.

37:39.340 --> 37:41.580
The Bible says in Psalm 109 and verse 7,

37:41.580 --> 37:44.220
when he shall be judged, let him be condemned,

37:44.220 --> 37:45.900
and let his prayer become sin.

37:45.900 --> 37:49.180
Let his days be few, and let another take his office.

37:49.180 --> 37:50.500
That's quoted in the New Testament.

37:50.500 --> 37:53.620
Verse 9, let his children be fatherless,

37:53.620 --> 37:56.580
and his wife a widow.

37:56.580 --> 37:59.420
That's what Jeremiah prayed in Jeremiah 18.

37:59.800 --> 38:03.800
I'm applying this to Jesus in Psalm 109 because you can.

38:03.800 --> 38:08.600
And so therefore I can conclude based on what the scripture is indicating

38:08.600 --> 38:16.100
that Jeremiah prayed for vengeance and even the Lord Jesus Christ himself communicating with the Father

38:16.100 --> 38:21.700
does the same thing in the context of praying against Judas Iscariot.

38:22.300 --> 38:28.380
And we all know that there's a Judas Iscariot that you can think of right now that we should not be

38:29.260 --> 38:33.900
actually going after carnally ourselves, but rather there should be someone that you can think of

38:33.900 --> 38:39.660
right now who is a Judas that you ought to be praying against. That's part of the prayer life.

38:39.660 --> 38:43.900
Now it's not the whole thing. It's not like every time I pray I'm like, God, please destroy

38:43.900 --> 38:47.980
X, Y, and Z person. Obviously we should pray good for people. I understand that there's

38:48.700 --> 38:53.460
More positive prayers that we need the negative ones. There's a whole prayer list

38:53.980 --> 38:58.980
Alright, it's not like I'm some angry man. That's just always just like curse curse curse like I'm not I'm not like that

38:58.980 --> 39:01.500
But the reality is though there is a time for it

39:03.220 --> 39:06.020
You say I don't like that well again. You just you just don't like the Bible

39:07.580 --> 39:13.440
Because I'm just reading the Bible tonight, and if you don't like the here's why I say this because folks

39:14.600 --> 39:22.600
I'll put on social media, hey, you know, we should pray for people, for God's people to be avenged.

39:22.600 --> 39:27.160
And then, look, you won't even believe it. Like, I'll get a whole bunch of comments from people,

39:27.160 --> 39:32.600
and they're just like, it's never right to pray for vengeance. You should never pray for vengeance.

39:32.600 --> 39:37.720
I'm like, what Bible are you reading? You might as well just admit to me you've never read

39:37.720 --> 39:41.720
the Bible at all. You've never read Psalms. You've never read Jeremiah. You've never read Luke 18.

39:42.300 --> 39:44.620
which I'll quote, I believe in a little bit here.

39:45.740 --> 39:49.820
But here in this petition, the wife is asked to become a widow.

39:49.820 --> 39:51.580
This is shades of Jeremiah 18.

39:52.220 --> 39:54.060
And you know, you have to understand Jesus,

39:54.060 --> 39:57.980
he's a righteous and innocent sufferer who was stabbed in the back.

39:58.200 --> 40:00.900
It makes sense for this to occur.

40:00.900 --> 40:04.600
He entrusts the Father to dull out the consequences though.

40:04.600 --> 40:05.800
And that's the same thing with us.

40:05.800 --> 40:09.500
We should entrust God the Father to dull out the consequences

40:09.500 --> 40:13.300
against those who want to stop the work of God from going forth,

40:13.300 --> 40:15.600
who want to hinder the cause of Christ.

40:16.900 --> 40:18.860
Jeremiah's prayer is vengeance.

40:18.860 --> 40:20.540
And here's what Jesus said,

40:20.540 --> 40:23.340
shall not God avenge his own elect,

40:23.340 --> 40:25.580
which cry day and night unto him,

40:25.580 --> 40:26.980
though he bear long with them.

40:26.980 --> 40:30.080
I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.

40:30.080 --> 40:31.980
Nevertheless, when the Son of Man cometh,

40:31.980 --> 40:33.620
shall he find faith on the earth.

40:33.620 --> 40:34.980
Hey, you know what the Bible teaches?

40:34.980 --> 40:37.820
God avenges his elect.

40:37.820 --> 40:39.220
That's what the Bible says.

40:42.000 --> 40:43.600
Let's look at Jeremiah 11.

40:46.200 --> 40:50.040
Jeremiah 11, and this will be the last point I make.

40:50.040 --> 40:53.940
We see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah through his affliction.

40:53.940 --> 40:56.980
Through his affliction.

40:56.980 --> 41:02.220
Both came unto their own, their own received them not.

41:02.220 --> 41:05.020
Both of them were plotted against.

41:05.020 --> 41:09.400
Both of them were declared to be worthy of death.

41:09.400 --> 41:12.600
And here in Jeremiah 11...

41:13.600 --> 41:19.400
He's describing himself in the same way that the Bible describes Jesus.

41:19.400 --> 41:21.800
In Jeremiah 11, look at verse 19.

41:21.800 --> 41:25.100
Jeremiah 11 and verse 19.

41:25.100 --> 41:25.600
It says,

41:25.600 --> 41:29.800
But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter,

41:29.800 --> 41:33.700
and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying,

41:33.700 --> 41:37.400
Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof,

41:37.400 --> 41:40.600
and let us cut him off from the land of the living.

41:40.700 --> 41:44.300
that his name may be no more remembered.

41:44.300 --> 41:49.580
Jeremiah comparing himself to a lamb being brought to the slaughter.

41:49.580 --> 41:54.140
Of course reminds us of the Lord Jesus Christ who was also a lamb

41:54.140 --> 41:59.260
brought to the slaughter. Notice what the enemy says here though. Let's destroy

41:59.260 --> 42:03.100
the tree with the fruit. Folks they want to get

42:03.100 --> 42:06.900
rid of the man and his preaching because

42:07.000 --> 42:09.240
That's what they're actually mad about.

42:10.120 --> 42:11.400
It's the preaching.

42:11.400 --> 42:14.280
It's the fruit of what is coming out of Jeremiah's mouth

42:14.280 --> 42:17.240
that they want to be stopped because they oppose truth.

42:18.280 --> 42:19.800
They are enemies of truth.

42:22.120 --> 42:24.600
It's always about the preaching.

42:24.600 --> 42:27.640
The enemy is threatened by our preaching.

42:28.440 --> 42:30.680
They are threatened by what we have to say

42:30.680 --> 42:33.320
because they're threatened by the word of God.

42:34.900 --> 42:36.740
Let's look at Isaiah 53.

42:36.840 --> 42:37.740
Isaiah 53.

42:41.300 --> 42:44.900
You say, what role do the Jews have to play in scripture?

42:44.900 --> 42:50.340
The role of the villains, going all the way back to Jeremiah.

42:50.340 --> 42:54.900
And villain is a very mild term that I could use for them.

42:54.900 --> 42:56.340
You say, that's anti-Semitic.

42:56.340 --> 42:58.260
Well, you know what?

42:58.260 --> 43:00.380
Semetic is not just about Jews, all right?

43:00.380 --> 43:02.700
And you know, that's kind of insi- I'm Semetic.

43:02.700 --> 43:03.860
It's Arab.

43:03.860 --> 43:05.100
It includes a bunch of Arabs.

43:05.100 --> 43:07.740
Why are you lumping me in with a bunch of Christ-hating-

43:08.000 --> 43:10.000
Insurance, or not insurance, sorry.

43:10.000 --> 43:16.000
Interest, bankers, and all these people ripping people off and doing the worst evils imaginable.

43:16.000 --> 43:17.000
Don't lump me in with them.

43:17.000 --> 43:19.000
They're white anyway.

43:19.000 --> 43:20.000
They're Ashkenazi.

43:23.300 --> 43:26.660
I don't like this. Well, can't really do anything for you.

43:26.660 --> 43:33.460
Isaiah 53, the priests of Judah, they respond to truth with contempt.

43:33.460 --> 43:39.380
All right. And so that's why Jeremiah describes himself as a lamb that is brought to the slaughter.

43:39.380 --> 43:42.980
That's how Jesus is described as well. Isaiah 53 in verse seven.

43:43.400 --> 43:48.940
Notice this Isaiah 53 in verse 7 he was oppressed and he was afflicted and he opened not his mouth

43:49.080 --> 43:51.940
He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter

43:52.640 --> 43:53.680
and

43:53.680 --> 43:56.360
By the way, I know I keep kicking that Jewish dog

43:57.000 --> 44:01.520
But you know the Jews will totally deny this has anything to do with Jesus

44:02.320 --> 44:05.320
Now you would have to be blind and stupid to believe that

44:06.880 --> 44:09.680
Which they are they're blind and stupid

44:11.200 --> 44:14.880
says he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before her

44:14.880 --> 44:19.760
sheers is dumb so he opened on his mouth jeremiah describes himself as a lamb

44:19.760 --> 44:24.240
brought to the slaughter and that's exactly what jesus was i think you can

44:24.240 --> 44:28.300
connect that with isaiah 53 and verse seven

44:29.000 --> 44:33.240
You know, another thing that we could connect the two with is the fact that Jeremiah, he

44:33.240 --> 44:39.240
was mocked, he was derided, he was taunted as well, and the same thing happened to the

44:39.240 --> 44:40.600
Lord Jesus Christ.

44:40.600 --> 44:47.120
We see that with the narrative of the Gospels and how, you know, directly before his crucifixion,

44:47.120 --> 44:51.200
they spit on him and they mocked him and they ridiculed him, and the same thing happened

44:51.200 --> 44:52.200
to Jeremiah.

44:52.200 --> 44:53.920
Go to Matthew 27, Matthew 27.

44:55.300 --> 44:58.100
In addition to that, they're both smitten.

44:58.100 --> 44:59.180
They're both smitten.

44:59.180 --> 45:03.740
Jeremiah was smitten just as Jesus was,

45:03.740 --> 45:06.940
because this is the cost of faithfully preaching

45:06.940 --> 45:10.180
an unpopular message.

45:10.180 --> 45:12.180
His affliction.

45:12.180 --> 45:15.060
And Jeremiah, they viewed him as treasonous

45:15.060 --> 45:18.100
for preaching about judgment against Judah.

45:18.100 --> 45:19.940
But all he was doing was preaching

45:19.940 --> 45:21.820
what God told him to, which was this.

45:22.200 --> 45:26.500
If you acquiesce to Nebuchadnezzar's army, you'll live.

45:26.500 --> 45:30.600
But if you try to stay here and fight against it, you will die.

45:30.600 --> 45:33.100
That's the theme of Jeremiah's preaching.

45:33.100 --> 45:36.100
Which again, from a broader perspective, all he's saying is,

45:36.100 --> 45:38.300
take the punishment you deserve.

45:39.500 --> 45:43.300
Don't try to run away from the chastisement and the judgment of God.

45:43.300 --> 45:47.500
You got to take the punishment that you deserve, the consequences of your actions.

45:47.500 --> 45:49.100
And the Jews don't want that.

45:49.100 --> 45:50.300
They don't want to hear that.

45:50.300 --> 45:53.300
They don't want to hear that they've done wrong.

45:53.300 --> 45:56.700
And so they persecute the prophet.

45:56.700 --> 45:58.300
I had you turn to Matthew 27.

45:58.300 --> 45:59.700
The Bible says in Jeremiah 2,

45:59.700 --> 46:03.700
then Pasher smote Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks

46:03.700 --> 46:06.700
that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.

46:06.900 --> 46:11.900
Pasher, a priest, the chief governor in Jerusalem,

46:11.900 --> 46:13.900
of the temple specifically,

46:13.900 --> 46:16.600
he ends up beating Jeremiah for preaching.

46:16.600 --> 46:18.600
Jeremiah is smitten.

46:18.600 --> 46:20.900
And in the same way, Jesus was also smitten.

46:20.900 --> 46:24.900
Look at Matthew 27, where it had you turn in verse 30.

46:24.900 --> 46:28.900
Matthew 27 and verse 30.

46:28.900 --> 46:32.900
And they spit upon him and took the reed and

46:32.900 --> 46:33.000
you

46:33.200 --> 46:37.200
Pay attention to this right here, smote him on the head.

46:37.200 --> 46:44.560
Now Jesus, despite being sinless, smitten like a common criminal.

46:44.560 --> 46:47.280
That's what happened.

46:47.280 --> 46:52.800
And this is before he's led to be crucified, having done nothing wrong.

46:52.800 --> 46:56.240
And that is the agony, that is what he went through for us.

46:56.240 --> 46:57.520
But it didn't end there.

46:58.600 --> 47:02.400
Jesus declared to be worthy of death, Jeremiah was as well.

47:02.400 --> 47:04.500
And that brings me back to Jeremiah 38.

47:04.500 --> 47:06.800
So let's go back over to Jeremiah 38.

47:11.000 --> 47:15.000
And I'll spend the rest of the sermon here in Jeremiah 38.

47:17.700 --> 47:21.700
There's so many parallels between Jeremiah and Jesus.

47:21.700 --> 47:27.700
And I believe this chapter right here gives us some that are really powerful.

47:27.700 --> 47:31.700
And in verse 4, this is after Jeremiah preaches...

47:34.000 --> 47:40.800
I'll just back up to verse 2. The Bible says in verse 2 here in Jeremiah 38, just for some

47:40.800 --> 47:41.440
context,

47:41.440 --> 47:46.400
Thus saith the LORD, he that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine,

47:46.400 --> 47:51.360
and by the pestilence. But he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans, that's the Babylonians,

47:51.360 --> 47:55.360
shall live, for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

47:55.800 --> 48:01.800
Thus saith the Lord, this city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it."

48:01.800 --> 48:08.300
So the gist of it is this. The Babylonians are coming. You've done wrong. You need to take the punishment.

48:08.300 --> 48:16.300
You need to go with them. You need to go into captivity. If you try to stay here, implying that, you know, if you try to fight it, you're gonna die.

48:16.300 --> 48:18.300
In verse 4.

48:18.700 --> 48:21.100
Therefore the princess said unto the king,

48:21.100 --> 48:22.400
How do they respond to this?

48:22.400 --> 48:26.400
We beseech thee, let this man be put to death."

48:26.400 --> 48:29.000
So just as sure as the Lord Jesus Christ,

48:29.000 --> 48:31.100
He preached judgment against Jerusalem,

48:31.100 --> 48:33.600
He preached the gospel, He preached truth,

48:33.600 --> 48:35.100
and they wanted to put him to death.

48:35.100 --> 48:38.000
And Jeremiah, he does the same thing.

48:38.000 --> 48:40.900
He's preaching truth, he's preaching what God commanded,

48:40.900 --> 48:42.600
and they want him dead.

48:44.400 --> 48:50.800
And you know what? There's profits today in 2026 America that the enemy wants to die.

48:51.920 --> 48:52.800
It's that simple.

48:55.100 --> 48:59.500
For thus he weakened at the hands of the men of war that remain in this city."

49:00.380 --> 49:07.340
That's a false accusation. Just as Jesus is falsely accused, Jeremiah is falsely accused of

49:07.340 --> 49:12.940
weakening the men of war that remain in the city. That was not his motivation. It was for them to

49:12.940 --> 49:20.140
take the punishment they deserved. He wasn't some spy for Babylon's team trying to weaken Judah and

49:20.140 --> 49:22.380
and make them easier for the taking.

49:22.600 --> 49:23.600
It says here,

49:24.500 --> 49:29.000
for thus he weakened at the hands of the men of war that remain in this city and the hands of all the people,

49:29.000 --> 49:35.100
in speaking such words unto them, for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

49:35.100 --> 49:38.100
Well, he actually literally told you how you can survive this onslaught,

49:38.500 --> 49:44.500
which is to just go along with Nebuchadnezzar's army, again, take the punishment you deserve.

49:45.200 --> 49:51.200
Well, in response, the ruling class here, they view Jeremiah as worthy of death.

49:52.320 --> 49:57.120
But you know what? And I made mention of this. There are prophets today

49:57.120 --> 50:00.400
who the enemy wants to die. It's just the reality of it.

50:02.000 --> 50:07.040
But it's better for the enemy to look at you. Those who hate the gospel, those who hate God.

50:07.700 --> 50:09.540
those who hate Steadfast Baptist Church,

50:09.540 --> 50:11.940
it's better for them to look at you

50:11.940 --> 50:13.540
and wish that you were dead,

50:13.540 --> 50:16.500
or it's better for them to look at you as worthy of death

50:16.500 --> 50:20.020
if it means that you get to stand in front of Jesus one day

50:20.020 --> 50:21.380
and hear him say,

50:21.380 --> 50:23.300
well done, good and faithful servant.

50:23.500 --> 50:30.020
You know, if being hated by the worst scum imaginable means that God's gonna reward me

50:30.020 --> 50:34.060
for all of eternity when I get to heaven or at the judgment seat of Christ or that God

50:34.060 --> 50:37.940
is gonna look on us and he's gonna say, well done, good and faithful servant, I will take

50:37.940 --> 50:44.340
that trade every single day of the week twice on Saturday too.

50:44.340 --> 50:45.400
I think it's Sunday.

50:45.400 --> 50:48.020
But my point is, I'll take that.

50:48.020 --> 50:49.540
Yes, please.

50:50.600 --> 50:56.200
I want to be the bad guy in their eyes so I can be the good guy in the eyes of God and his people.

50:57.960 --> 51:03.400
And you know what? Jeremiah was the bad guy in the eyes of these wicked Jews who hated the truth,

51:03.400 --> 51:08.200
who hated the preaching, who hated the word of God, and you know what? He was a hero in God's eyes.

51:09.320 --> 51:14.520
And he's someone that we should look to as a positive example. He's a hero in our eyes as

51:14.520 --> 51:17.960
well. He's forever in the scripture as a positive example.

51:19.400 --> 51:20.240
Look at verse 5.

51:20.240 --> 51:22.200
Then Zedekiah the king said,

51:22.200 --> 51:24.400
behold, he is in your hand,

51:24.400 --> 51:27.760
for the king is not he that can do anything against you.

51:27.760 --> 51:29.320
So King Zedekiah relents.

51:29.320 --> 51:32.920
He allows Jeremiah to be physically assaulted

51:32.920 --> 51:34.640
and to be physically afflicted

51:34.640 --> 51:36.960
and thrown into the dungeon,

51:36.960 --> 51:40.360
which we read about earlier and I'll get back to it.

51:40.360 --> 51:42.680
But look at the cowardice.

51:42.680 --> 51:43.500
He says,

51:43.500 --> 51:43.600
you

51:43.600 --> 51:46.400
The king is not he that can do anything against you.

51:46.400 --> 51:49.200
He's acting like he's powerless to stop it,

51:49.200 --> 51:50.800
when that's not the case.

51:50.800 --> 51:51.800
He could have.

51:53.400 --> 51:55.000
And it reminds me of Pilate.

51:55.900 --> 51:59.800
And this is what he said in an act of cowardice,

52:00.400 --> 52:02.600
when the Jews brought Jesus to him,

52:02.800 --> 52:05.600
knowing that Jesus was innocent,

52:06.200 --> 52:08.900
having had private conversations with him.

52:09.300 --> 52:10.500
It was obvious.

52:11.000 --> 52:12.500
But you know what he says?

52:12.500 --> 52:15.340
See ye to it.

52:15.340 --> 52:20.240
Just as Zedekiah here, he says, he is in your hand.

52:20.240 --> 52:23.440
So that's another connection between Jeremiah and Jesus.

52:23.440 --> 52:24.540
Let's look at verse 6.

52:25.700 --> 52:30.700
Then took they Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah, the son of Hamalek,

52:30.700 --> 52:32.700
that was in the court of the prison.

52:32.700 --> 52:39.700
And they let down Jeremiah with cords, and in the dungeon there was no water but mire.

52:39.700 --> 52:43.700
So Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

52:43.700 --> 52:48.700
Jeremiah sinks in the mire, the muck of this dungeon.

52:48.700 --> 52:51.600
After Zedekiah hands him over,

52:51.600 --> 52:58.600
And, you know, the princes, they throw Jeremiah into this muddy, like, cistern-type thing,

52:58.600 --> 53:03.600
and they lower him with ropes into a pit where there is no water.

53:03.600 --> 53:08.240
And the intention was to leave him there until he dies.

53:08.240 --> 53:13.760
The intention was for Jeremiah to die a miserable and slow and painful death.

53:16.900 --> 53:19.900
This reminds me of hell.

53:19.900 --> 53:24.200
Jeremiah sunk in the mire where there was no water.

53:24.200 --> 53:30.800
And in the same way, the Lord Jesus Christ went to hell for us.

53:30.800 --> 53:35.200
So that we would not have to pay the penalty for our sins.

53:35.200 --> 53:37.800
Again, there's no water here.

53:37.800 --> 53:39.800
Reminds me of what the rich man said.

53:39.800 --> 53:43.300
While he was in hell, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus,

53:43.300 --> 53:47.300
that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,

53:47.300 --> 53:50.300
for I am tormented in this flame.

53:50.300 --> 53:53.800
Folks, in hell, there is no drink of water.

53:53.800 --> 53:55.300
In hell...

53:55.300 --> 53:57.700
You can't have even just a drop of water.

53:57.700 --> 54:00.900
And notice the rich man, he wanted just a drop.

54:00.900 --> 54:07.400
Even just one drop would have soothed the agonizing feeling of thirst that he was feeling in hell.

54:07.400 --> 54:13.200
This wretched, just torturous feeling of wanting water so badly and it being unavailable for you.

54:13.200 --> 54:15.100
Because in hell, there is no water.

54:15.100 --> 54:19.200
There's only eternal fire and punishment that lasts forever.

54:20.200 --> 54:23.100
And he's asking, just one drop.

54:23.600 --> 54:26.960
to soothe the torment just a little bit.

54:26.960 --> 54:29.840
But all he gets is, is Meyer instead.

54:32.000 --> 54:34.480
Just one single drop of water,

54:35.360 --> 54:38.080
and he would have been assuaged,

54:38.080 --> 54:39.280
but it didn't happen.

54:41.500 --> 54:45.700
Jeremiah sunk in the mire where there was no water.

54:45.700 --> 54:50.380
And folks, that's exactly what Jesus did for you.

54:50.380 --> 54:54.240
The Lord Jesus Christ, not only did he take your sin,

54:54.240 --> 54:59.520
he took the penalty for your sin and descended into hell.

54:59.520 --> 55:03.720
And in Psalm 69, the Bible alludes to this.

55:03.720 --> 55:06.360
Let's look at Psalm 69 and verse 2.

55:07.800 --> 55:11.640
I might have said that we're not leaving Jeremiah anymore. I apologize I was wrong.

55:11.640 --> 55:15.000
Let's look at Psalm 69. We'll go right back to Jeremiah afterward.

55:20.800 --> 55:25.100
Jesus, after his death, takes our sin of course.

55:25.100 --> 55:26.500
We know that he took our sin on the cross,

55:26.500 --> 55:29.300
but he also took the punishment for that sin,

55:29.300 --> 55:32.100
and he went to hell as a burnt offering.

55:32.100 --> 55:33.700
The Bible says that he, seeing this before,

55:33.700 --> 55:35.500
spake of the resurrection of Christ,

55:35.500 --> 55:38.000
that his soul was not left in hell.

55:38.000 --> 55:39.000
And if it wasn't left there,

55:39.000 --> 55:42.200
it had to have been there at one point.

55:42.200 --> 55:43.300
The Bible teaches that.

55:43.300 --> 55:45.800
Acts 2.31 is what I quoted.

55:45.800 --> 55:48.500
He sunk in the mire so that you wouldn't have to.

55:49.600 --> 55:51.700
And Jeremiah foreshadowed this.

55:51.800 --> 55:55.480
Now in Psalm 69, again, I think this can be applied to Christ.

55:55.580 --> 55:57.580
Look at verse 2.

55:57.680 --> 55:59.280
Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

55:59.380 --> 56:04.180
And as far as Jesus is concerned, Psalm 69 in verse 2,

56:04.280 --> 56:05.920
I sink in deep mire.

56:06.600 --> 56:08.100
where there is no standing.

56:08.100 --> 56:09.700
I am come into deep waters,

56:09.700 --> 56:11.500
where the floods overflow me.

56:11.500 --> 56:13.200
I am weary of my crying,

56:13.200 --> 56:14.900
my throat is dried,

56:14.900 --> 56:19.700
my eyes fail while I wait for my God."

56:19.700 --> 56:23.000
So just as Jeremiah sunk in the mire,

56:23.000 --> 56:25.700
that typifies what happened to Jesus.

56:25.700 --> 56:27.900
He also sunk in the mire,

56:27.900 --> 56:31.200
figuratively meaning he went to hell.

56:31.200 --> 56:32.700
He went to hell for us.

56:32.900 --> 56:38.500
And this chapter, it describes the pains of hell and the torment of hell.

56:39.220 --> 56:45.820
And this, you know, excretion, this pain, it's unimaginable.

56:46.180 --> 56:50.100
And it's what Jesus walked through so that you can go to heaven for free.

56:52.100 --> 56:52.820
Think about that.

56:53.820 --> 56:54.740
Matthew 12.

56:55.500 --> 56:59.200
You don't have to turn there, I'll just quote it for you in Matthew 12.

56:59.200 --> 57:03.500
Jesus said, for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly,

57:03.500 --> 57:08.200
so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

57:08.200 --> 57:11.700
Hey, Jeremiah is lowered into that dungeon where there was no water.

57:11.700 --> 57:16.400
Jesus also was lowered into the heart of the earth where there was no water.

57:16.400 --> 57:18.700
That's what the Bible teaches.

57:18.700 --> 57:22.100
But Jeremiah didn't stay there.

57:22.500 --> 57:25.300
He was eventually brought back out.

57:25.300 --> 57:28.800
And in the same way, Jesus Christ didn't stay in hell

57:28.800 --> 57:30.540
because we know on the third day,

57:30.540 --> 57:33.340
He rose again physically from the dead.

57:33.700 --> 57:40.000
Unlike Joseph Smith the pervert founder of Mormonism, which is basically Islam for white people

57:40.000 --> 57:46.160
You know, he's dead and he's in hell today burning every single day and he will be forever

57:46.740 --> 57:50.300
Muhammad as well burning in hell forever

57:50.300 --> 57:55.760
He didn't rise from the dead. None of these false prophets who started fake religions rose from the dead

57:55.760 --> 58:01.700
But what makes Jesus Christ distinct and different is that he is who he said that he is and he rose from the

58:01.700 --> 58:06.940
dead on the third day. He went back up into heaven today he's at the right hand

58:06.940 --> 58:09.900
of God the Father. Let's look at Jeremiah 38 again.

58:13.200 --> 58:18.400
Yes, you know, Jeremiah, he's lowered into that dungeon, sinking in the mire.

58:18.400 --> 58:23.880
Jesus, in the same way, he descended into hell for three days and three nights, taking

58:23.880 --> 58:25.580
our place there.

58:25.580 --> 58:28.320
But he didn't stay there.

58:28.320 --> 58:34.360
Verse seven, Jeremiah 38 and verse seven, let's read this here, Jeremiah 38 and verse

58:34.360 --> 58:37.480
seven as I begin to wind this thing down.

58:37.480 --> 58:39.980
Now when Ibad Melek the Ethiopian...

58:40.800 --> 58:42.800
Isn't that interesting? The Ethiopian.

58:42.800 --> 58:46.400
One of the eunuchs, which was in the king's house,

58:46.400 --> 58:48.800
heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon.

58:48.800 --> 58:51.600
The king then, sitting in the gate of Benjamin,

58:51.600 --> 58:55.360
Ibn Melik went forth out of the king's house and spake to the king, saying,

58:55.360 --> 58:59.680
My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet,

58:59.680 --> 59:01.360
whom they've cast into the dungeon.

59:01.360 --> 59:05.520
And he has liked to die for hunger in the place where he is,

59:05.520 --> 59:07.920
for there is no more bread in the city.

59:08.700 --> 59:13.920
Ebed melek he says he know what Jeremiah is going to die. We got to get him out essentially

59:13.980 --> 59:19.640
He's about to die of hunger and and you know, he says there's no more bread in the city

59:19.720 --> 59:24.980
Which by the way, that's like a microcosm of the spiritual state of Jerusalem at the time

59:24.980 --> 59:29.380
There wasn't any carnal bread, but you know what there wasn't any spiritual bread there either

59:29.380 --> 59:35.660
They've rejected the Word of God. There was no bread in that city. That's why they were doing what they were doing to Jeremiah

59:38.600 --> 59:43.300
And there's something interesting about this passage.

59:43.400 --> 59:48.700
The Jews want Jeremiah dead, but then here we have a Gentile.

59:48.800 --> 59:54.740
We have the Ethiopian, you know, bro from South Dallas.

59:54.840 --> 59:58.140
He doesn't want Jeremiah dead.

59:58.240 --> 59:59.440
Why?

59:59.540 --> 01:00:02.920
Because it was the Gentiles who were receptive to the gospel

01:00:03.020 --> 01:00:03.820
in the New Testament.

01:00:06.900 --> 01:00:11.900
You know, it's Jewish rejection, Gentile reception.

01:00:11.900 --> 01:00:14.900
That's the theme in the scripture.

01:00:14.900 --> 01:00:21.700
Jewish rejection, Gentile reception, and we see a shadow of that here in Jeremiah 38.

01:00:23.200 --> 01:00:28.640
Because it was Jeremiah's countrymen, the Jews, they demanded that he was lowered into the prison,

01:00:28.640 --> 01:00:34.880
into the dungeon rather, and to sink in the mire until he dies a slow and horrible death.

01:00:34.880 --> 01:00:39.520
And they mocked him and they threatened him. But then it was this Ethiopian that the Bible says,

01:00:39.520 --> 01:00:45.280
actually in the next chapter, in chapter 39, it literally ends by telling you that he trusted in God.

01:00:46.160 --> 01:00:50.480
This, uh, Ebed Melek, we could just look at it if we just go one page over.

01:00:52.000 --> 01:00:54.500
Not too far away here.

01:00:54.600 --> 01:00:59.900
And look at verse, let me find it, verse 16.

01:01:01.900 --> 01:01:05.200
says in the next chapter, chapter 39, verse 16,

01:01:05.200 --> 01:01:07.540
go and speak to Ebed-Mellek the Ethiopian,

01:01:07.540 --> 01:01:10.040
saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

01:01:10.040 --> 01:01:13.080
behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil

01:01:13.080 --> 01:01:15.320
and not for good, and they shall be accomplished

01:01:15.320 --> 01:01:17.720
in that day before thee, but I will, notice,

01:01:17.720 --> 01:01:20.520
deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord,

01:01:20.520 --> 01:01:23.280
and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men

01:01:23.280 --> 01:01:26.400
of whom thou art afraid, for I will surely deliver thee,

01:01:26.400 --> 01:01:28.720
and thou shalt not fall by the sword,

01:01:28.720 --> 01:01:29.900
but thy life shall be.

01:01:29.900 --> 01:01:36.820
for a prey unto thee, because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord."

01:01:36.820 --> 01:01:37.820
So you know what?

01:01:37.820 --> 01:01:43.640
Just as sure as it was a Gentile, the Ethiopian, who spoke good unto Jeremiah, in the same

01:01:43.640 --> 01:01:49.660
way we know that the gospel was received by the Gentiles in the New Testament.

01:01:49.660 --> 01:01:52.420
And they are the ones who trusted in God.

01:01:52.420 --> 01:01:53.220
This is why.

01:01:54.800 --> 01:01:56.540
Paul concludes in Acts 28,

01:01:56.540 --> 01:01:57.740
be it known therefore unto you

01:01:57.740 --> 01:02:00.640
that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles

01:02:00.640 --> 01:02:02.220
and they will hear it.

01:02:04.340 --> 01:02:07.820
Again, Jewish rejection, Gentile reception.

01:02:07.820 --> 01:02:09.320
That's the theme in scripture.

01:02:09.320 --> 01:02:11.120
Let's keep going here and I'm gonna finish up.

01:02:11.120 --> 01:02:13.620
Jeremiah 38 and verse 10.

01:02:15.420 --> 01:02:17.160
Jeremiah 38 and verse 10.

01:02:17.400 --> 01:02:20.640
Then the king commanded Ebed-Mellek the Ethiopian, saying,

01:02:20.640 --> 01:02:25.540
Take from hence thirty men with me, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he die.

01:02:25.540 --> 01:02:29.740
So Ebed-Mellek took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury,

01:02:29.740 --> 01:02:33.540
and took thence old cast-clouds and old rotten rags,

01:02:33.540 --> 01:02:38.740
and let them down by cords into the dungeon of Jeremiah.

01:02:38.900 --> 01:02:40.900
So Jeremiah didn't stay there.

01:02:40.900 --> 01:02:48.100
He was taken out of the dungeon, out of this mire that he was sinking in, that had surrounded him.

01:02:48.100 --> 01:02:54.740
And he's taken out despite the fact that they were using old rotten rags.

01:02:54.740 --> 01:02:59.940
And in the same way, the Lord Jesus Christ, he rose again from the dead,

01:02:59.940 --> 01:03:04.660
despite the fact that he took the sins of the whole world on himself.

01:03:06.500 --> 01:03:11.000
And this right here is reminiscent of Jesus,

01:03:11.100 --> 01:03:15.840
as the Bible says, being loosed from the pains of death.

01:03:15.940 --> 01:03:17.140
Let's look at verse 13.

01:03:17.240 --> 01:03:19.440
Let's skip down a verse to verse 13.

01:03:19.900 --> 01:03:26.140
So they drew up Jeremiah with cords and took him up out of the dungeon and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

01:03:26.140 --> 01:03:34.620
So Jeremiah is delivered from the dungeon with cords just as it was Jesus who rose again from the dead.

01:03:34.620 --> 01:03:39.900
Jeremiah came back from the mire and you know what? Jesus defeated death and hell for you.

01:03:41.260 --> 01:03:43.740
So that all you have to do is believe.

01:03:43.740 --> 01:03:46.620
And...

01:03:47.000 --> 01:03:51.320
You know, something else I want to mention to you is that we noticed Jeremiah,

01:03:51.320 --> 01:03:56.760
he's taken up out of the dungeon, out of the mire, before he dies.

01:03:56.760 --> 01:04:00.280
In the sense that, you know, Ebed-Mellek, if you pay attention to what he said,

01:04:00.280 --> 01:04:03.080
said, hey, he's going to die if we leave him here.

01:04:03.080 --> 01:04:06.280
So he's taken out just in time, in a sense.

01:04:06.280 --> 01:04:09.080
Because if they had left him, who knows, he might not have survived.

01:04:09.400 --> 01:04:13.560
Well, obviously Jesus did die, we know that, so there's a distinction there.

01:04:13.560 --> 01:04:18.480
But Jesus rose again before his body could see corruption.

01:04:18.480 --> 01:04:24.420
Because if Jeremiah had died, his body would have seen corruption, and Jesus, he rose again

01:04:24.420 --> 01:04:28.320
the third day before his body could see corruption.

01:04:28.320 --> 01:04:33.600
The Bible says, thou shalt not suffer thine holy one to see corruption.

01:04:35.200 --> 01:04:40.800
So there's a lot of powerful comparisons here in this chapter and in this entire book.

01:04:40.800 --> 01:04:46.000
But I'm going to go ahead and wind it down and just provide an application for us and then

01:04:46.000 --> 01:04:52.080
and then we can go home. You know we see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah through his emotion,

01:04:52.080 --> 01:04:59.760
through his prayer, through his preaching, through his affliction. And so what do we take from this?

01:04:59.760 --> 01:05:00.260
Swamp.

01:05:01.200 --> 01:05:08.160
If Jeremiah is like Jesus, then my challenge for you is to be like Jeremiah.

01:05:08.880 --> 01:05:12.480
Be like Jeremiah. You know what? Preach the same way that he did,

01:05:12.480 --> 01:05:18.000
or support the men of God who are preaching the same way he did. You know? How about that?

01:05:19.920 --> 01:05:23.600
Pray the same way he did. And you know what? That does mean...

01:05:24.600 --> 01:05:29.160
For those of you bleeding hearts out there, that does mean that you're gonna have to pray for vengeance once in a while.

01:05:30.280 --> 01:05:36.200
And if you don't know who to pray against, I'm not joking. You come to me after the service,

01:05:37.240 --> 01:05:39.240
I will give you a list.

01:05:42.600 --> 01:05:44.600
I'll give you a prayer list.

01:05:50.000 --> 01:05:52.300
How about, you know what, understand this,

01:05:52.300 --> 01:05:54.140
that if you're going to be like Jeremiah,

01:05:54.140 --> 01:05:58.000
realize you may end up getting afflicted by him.

01:05:58.000 --> 01:05:59.240
Excuse me, by him.

01:05:59.240 --> 01:06:01.280
You may get afflicted like him.

01:06:01.280 --> 01:06:04.440
And look, I'm not saying it'll be the exact same thing,

01:06:04.440 --> 01:06:05.640
but you know what, though?

01:06:05.640 --> 01:06:07.440
When you stand for truth,

01:06:07.700 --> 01:06:10.300
Expect persecution. Just expect it.

01:06:10.300 --> 01:06:12.900
The Bible says, yeah, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus

01:06:12.900 --> 01:06:14.900
shall suffer persecution.

01:06:14.900 --> 01:06:15.900
So what's the point here?

01:06:15.900 --> 01:06:18.800
Hey, preach like Jeremiah, pray like Jeremiah.

01:06:18.800 --> 01:06:22.600
Have the same emotion that Jeremiah did toward the lost.

01:06:22.600 --> 01:06:25.500
Actually feeling sorrowful for the fact that there's so many people

01:06:25.500 --> 01:06:28.100
dying and going to hell.

01:06:28.100 --> 01:06:29.800
And additionally, hey, you know what?

01:06:29.800 --> 01:06:31.800
Be prepared for affliction.

01:06:32.300 --> 01:06:34.080
Be prepared for persecution.

01:06:34.080 --> 01:06:38.580
Be prepared for the cost of standing for truth.

01:06:38.580 --> 01:06:43.180
Because that is the result of standing for truth,

01:06:43.180 --> 01:06:44.180
is affliction.

01:06:44.180 --> 01:06:46.520
You may end up, if you want to be like Jeremiah,

01:06:46.520 --> 01:06:50.620
take heed to this warning, you may end up getting afflicted.

01:06:50.620 --> 01:06:53.660
The way, in similar fashion to him.

01:06:56.200 --> 01:06:58.360
Remember, they've called the master of the house Beelzebub.

01:06:58.360 --> 01:07:00.200
How much more shall they call them of his household?

01:07:01.160 --> 01:07:02.160
Just be prepared for that.

01:07:03.680 --> 01:07:08.640
So we see again through his emotion, his preaching, his prayer and his affliction.

01:07:09.040 --> 01:07:11.240
We see Jesus in the life of Jeremiah.

01:07:12.360 --> 01:07:15.360
So let's bow our heads for a word of prayer.

01:07:15.360 --> 01:07:18.320
Father in heaven, we thank you, Lord God, for this church.

01:07:18.320 --> 01:07:20.720
And I pray that you would help us to be like.

01:07:21.300 --> 01:07:28.380
Jeremiah and to take these lessons in scripture and apply them to our lives and use him as a role model for us to preach

01:07:28.380 --> 01:07:32.700
Like him to have his emotion to pray like him and to be ready to be afflicted

01:07:33.300 --> 01:07:35.980
Like he was afflicted and and Lord

01:07:35.980 --> 01:07:41.500
I pray that you continue to put your hedge of protection over this church and help us to continue to bear fruit for you

01:07:41.500 --> 01:07:43.400
We love you in Jesus name. I pray

01:07:51.200 --> 01:07:54.960
Amen. For our last song we're going to go to song number 336.

01:07:59.900 --> 01:08:06.900
Song number 336, Constantly Abiding.

01:08:06.900 --> 01:08:16.900
Song 336, Constantly Abiding. Watch me for the timing on the chorus.

01:08:16.900 --> 01:08:19.900
Sing it out all together on the first.

01:11:39.800 --> 01:11:41.800
Great seeing everybody. You are all dismissed.
