This is God's word, but this is Paul's mind, right? 27:20.900 --> 27:24.900 This is Paul writing this down. This is how Paul feels about things. 27:24.900 --> 27:26.900 In verse 1, it says, 27:39.900 --> 27:43.900 You know, a lot of preachers today could learn some lessons from Paul, 27:43.900 --> 27:46.900 in that when Paul's coming on the scene, 27:46.900 --> 27:50.900 Paul is not super worried about sounding high and mighty. 27:50.900 --> 27:53.900 Not only is he not super worried, he's not worried about it at all. 27:53.900 --> 27:58.900 He's not coming, like he says in verse 1, with excellency of speech or of wisdom. 27:58.900 --> 28:04.900 Paul's not coming to explain to you soteriology and eschatology using those terms, 28:04.900 --> 28:08.900 which what do those even mean? Soteriology means salvation, right? 28:08.900 --> 28:11.900 The doctrine of salvation. Eschatology is the salvation, or excuse me, 28:11.900 --> 28:13.900 the doctrine of the end times. 28:13.900 --> 28:16.900 You know, a lot of preachers will use those rather than just be clear and just tell you, 28:16.900 --> 28:18.900 hey, let's talk about salvation. 28:18.900 --> 28:22.900 They're like, well, we're going to talk about soteriology throughout the Scriptures. 28:22.900 --> 28:24.900 Why do people do this? Why do preachers do this? 28:24.900 --> 28:27.900 Because a lot of preachers, they don't have Paul's mentality. 28:27.900 --> 28:30.900 They do want to come at you with excellency of words. 28:30.900 --> 28:35.900 They do want to come to you with these big swelling words and to sound like they're really intelligent. 28:35.900 --> 28:39.900 But Paul's like, hey, you know what? I'm not coming with excellency of speech. 28:39.900 --> 28:44.900 I'm not coming to you of all this great, you know, worldly wisdom. 28:44.900 --> 28:46.900 Verse 2, he says, 28:52.900 --> 28:55.900 See, Paul's mentality is here's the main thing, right? 28:55.900 --> 28:57.900 Let's keep the main thing the main thing. 28:57.900 --> 29:00.900 And what's the main thing when it comes to all things preaching? 29:00.900 --> 29:04.900 It's Jesus Christ and him crucified. 29:04.900 --> 29:07.900 Now, what is the context, though, for the sermon this evening? 29:07.900 --> 29:13.900 I want to preach a sermon titled Effective Soul Winning. Effective Soul Winning. 29:13.900 --> 29:17.900 Now, I'm talking to a room of people in various stages of soul winning, right? 29:17.900 --> 29:20.900 Maybe you're very new. Maybe you've never been soul winning. 29:20.900 --> 29:23.900 Maybe you're a silent partner. Maybe you go every week. 29:23.900 --> 29:27.900 Maybe you have your own times that you go to in the middle of the week, right? 29:27.900 --> 29:29.900 There are a lot of different. 29:29.900 --> 29:33.900 There's a there's a large spectrum is what I'm trying to say of where we're at. 29:33.900 --> 29:36.900 Each of us in our soul winning life. 29:36.900 --> 29:41.900 But sometimes it's good to have a reminder of what makes soul winning effective. 29:41.900 --> 29:45.900 Right now, here's the number one point. If you get nothing else from the sermon, 29:45.900 --> 29:48.900 here's one thing that I want you to do. Go soul winning. 29:48.900 --> 29:49.900 Come on. 29:49.900 --> 29:52.900 Even though he didn't believe it's true. 29:52.900 --> 29:56.900 See the Bible says he knew what his soul did and how his soul won. 29:56.900 --> 30:00.900 Paul is telling us that when he came to these churches, 30:00.900 --> 30:05.900 when he's writing this epistle to Corinth of all the things that Paul experienced, 30:05.900 --> 30:11.900 of all the great travels and experiences that Paul had and I mean, 30:11.900 --> 30:14.900 think about how he could bestow upon them wisdom. 30:14.900 --> 30:16.900 How it relates to the Jews religion. 30:16.900 --> 30:22.060 He has all this knowledge, he would have all this worldly wisdom, but his mentality was, 30:22.060 --> 30:24.580 hey, you know what, let's keep the main thing the main thing. 30:24.580 --> 30:26.940 It's about Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 30:26.940 --> 30:29.140 You know what, I want you to keep the main thing the main thing. 30:29.140 --> 30:31.060 I hope you're coming to church. 30:31.060 --> 30:32.980 I hope you're reading your Bible. 30:32.980 --> 30:35.100 I hope you're praying every day. 30:35.100 --> 30:37.940 Those are all very important, but you know what else I hope that you're doing? 30:37.940 --> 30:39.740 I hope you're going soul winning. 30:39.740 --> 30:43.260 I hope you're opening your mouth boldly and making known the mystery of the gospel, because 30:43.260 --> 30:49.700 a lot of people will get into arguments about grammar and just Facebook, you know, arguments 30:49.700 --> 30:50.700 for no reason. 30:50.700 --> 30:53.980 Yet, these same people will never open their mouth boldly and make known the mystery of 30:53.980 --> 30:54.980 the gospel. 30:54.980 --> 30:55.980 Why? 30:55.980 --> 30:57.940 A lot of people, they just want to be really smart at work. 30:57.940 --> 31:01.140 They want to be really smart at maybe, you know, a lot about video games, right? 31:01.140 --> 31:02.260 I speak as a fool, okay? 31:02.260 --> 31:03.420 I the more. 31:03.420 --> 31:04.420 You know what? 31:04.420 --> 31:07.660 That's not the main thing that I want to focus on with my life and just dedicate my whole 31:07.660 --> 31:08.660 life to. 31:08.660 --> 31:10.220 We need to dedicate it to the gospel. 31:10.220 --> 31:11.740 And what's the best way to do that? 31:11.740 --> 31:14.340 To be an effective. 31:14.340 --> 31:19.380 You know, Mark 16, 15, the Bible says, and he said to them, go into all the world and 31:19.380 --> 31:22.780 preach the gospel. 31:22.780 --> 31:25.900 You know, if Jesus Christ, none of us believe in imminency here. 31:25.900 --> 31:27.060 If you do, you're wrong. 31:27.060 --> 31:30.260 But if Jesus Christ did come back right now, like the old IFB wants to say is going to 31:30.260 --> 31:34.700 happen all the time, and you did stand before Jesus Christ right now, if you do pass away 31:34.700 --> 31:38.860 on the way home today and you're saved, you're going straight to heaven, would you be able 31:39.340 --> 31:41.340 to say, hey, I preach the gospel to every creature. 31:41.340 --> 31:43.740 I went into the world and I was preaching the gospel. 31:43.740 --> 31:47.220 I determined not to know anything with my life except Christ and Him crucified. 31:47.220 --> 31:52.380 And I would bet all of us, myself included, would probably feel like if we died today, 31:52.380 --> 31:54.380 man, I could have done some more soul winning. 31:54.380 --> 31:56.140 Man, I could have been a little bit bolder. 31:56.140 --> 31:59.180 Man, I could have improved my soul winning, right? 31:59.180 --> 32:02.420 Now when it comes to effective soul winning, I have five points for you this evening. 32:02.420 --> 32:06.620 We'll look at a couple of verses for each on what I personally believe makes soul winning 32:06.620 --> 32:08.260 extremely effective. 32:08.260 --> 32:13.780 Now we're going to start with one that's probably dead stop easy, but that goes to what Paul's 32:13.780 --> 32:14.780 saying here. 32:14.780 --> 32:19.300 Here's number one, effective soul winning is biblical. 32:19.300 --> 32:21.940 Effective soul winning is biblical. 32:21.940 --> 32:22.940 Turn if you would. 32:22.940 --> 32:23.940 Actually, don't turn anywhere. 32:23.940 --> 32:25.100 You're still in 1 Corinthians 2. 32:25.100 --> 32:27.180 Stay there. 32:27.180 --> 32:30.700 People like cute sayings and maybe that helps them remember. 32:30.700 --> 32:34.660 Let me help you out, okay, because cliche sayings are not my forte. 32:34.660 --> 32:35.660 But here's one. 32:35.660 --> 32:42.780 Why don't you win people with the word, not with the world? 32:42.780 --> 32:46.260 Win people with the word, not with the world. 32:46.260 --> 32:47.740 And you say, well, yeah, that's obvious. 32:47.740 --> 32:48.740 Yeah, I get that. 32:48.740 --> 32:49.740 Yeah, I've heard that before. 32:49.740 --> 32:50.740 But here's the thing. 32:50.740 --> 32:54.620 I drive down Northwest Expressway every Sunday to come to church and Wednesday as well. 32:54.620 --> 32:57.580 But every Sunday, they've got the live church people out there doing their little wave with 32:57.580 --> 32:58.580 the signs. 32:58.580 --> 33:02.180 And so many people, look, they're only doing that because it works. 33:02.180 --> 33:04.500 They're doing that because people, and I've heard this before where they're like, I'm 33:04.500 --> 33:05.500 just looking for a sign. 33:05.500 --> 33:07.980 I'm looking, and they literally have the sign. 33:07.980 --> 33:09.260 They're like, I'm just looking for a sign. 33:09.260 --> 33:11.620 Oh, that person's waving at me to come into church. 33:11.620 --> 33:12.740 What are they being won with? 33:12.740 --> 33:15.700 They're being won with, let's be honest, hospitality. 33:15.700 --> 33:17.020 Is there anything wrong with hospitality? 33:17.020 --> 33:18.540 No, not at all. 33:18.540 --> 33:19.540 We should be hospitable. 33:19.540 --> 33:24.660 But you know what these people flocking into live church or mosaic church or whatever, 33:24.660 --> 33:27.900 the one attached to Incredible Pizza, yeah, I'm sure they're going there for the doctrine. 33:27.900 --> 33:29.580 What is it that these people are going there for? 33:29.580 --> 33:30.580 It's not the doctrine. 33:30.580 --> 33:33.340 Now, look, there's nothing wrong with recreation. 33:33.380 --> 33:35.260 There's nothing wrong with hospitality. 33:35.260 --> 33:38.860 There's nothing wrong with having a very welcoming, loving church. 33:38.860 --> 33:40.560 We should strive for that. 33:40.560 --> 33:45.060 But I would rather everything else fail and have Christ and him crucified. 33:45.060 --> 33:46.060 Because you know what? 33:46.060 --> 33:49.780 I don't care how many people, I don't care if it's 15 minutes of the turn to your left 33:49.780 --> 33:53.100 and right and shake your neighbor's hand, right, that I've been in churches like that. 33:53.100 --> 33:54.100 And I cringe at that. 33:54.100 --> 33:55.100 I don't like that. 33:55.100 --> 33:57.100 Some people though, they really like that. 33:57.100 --> 33:58.740 Some people really like the, oh, I want to meet people. 33:58.740 --> 34:00.300 Oh, I want to get to know them. 34:00.340 --> 34:04.460 I just want to show up at a church where even if nobody ever says hello to me, it has Christ 34:04.460 --> 34:05.460 and him crucified. 34:05.460 --> 34:06.460 And you know what? 34:06.460 --> 34:10.420 Applying this to soul winning, when we go out soul winning, when I go soul winning with 34:10.420 --> 34:15.560 people and I'm showing someone or leading someone or let's just say I'm myself soul 34:15.560 --> 34:17.100 winning, you know what? 34:17.100 --> 34:20.300 I have seen this a lot of times where people trip over themselves trying to be just like 34:20.300 --> 34:22.660 the nicest person at the door. 34:22.660 --> 34:25.420 But then you like never tell someone that they're unsaved. 34:25.420 --> 34:27.140 And we'll kind of get to that as a specific point. 34:27.140 --> 34:29.260 Or they're like trying, it's like the Mormons, right? 53:40.300 --> 53:44.460 Or you're preaching somewhere which is insanely unreceptive and you need to move on. 53:44.460 --> 53:47.220 But here's something else effective soul winning is. 53:47.220 --> 53:48.580 Effective soul winning is biblical. 53:48.580 --> 53:51.060 It's also clear. 53:51.060 --> 53:52.860 Effective soul winning is clear. 53:52.860 --> 53:56.220 Now you'll notice as we go through, a lot of these points may overlap a little bit, 53:56.220 --> 53:58.260 but here's another thing. 53:58.260 --> 54:03.860 Some people are worried that they're not going to be able to explain the gospel well. 54:03.860 --> 54:08.940 Other people need to worry about just keeping it simple because they go out and way over 54:09.420 --> 54:13.820 explain things and get what they snow people with big words and they just want to make 54:13.820 --> 54:16.340 it this big show. 54:16.340 --> 54:18.220 So we don't want to be on either side. 54:18.220 --> 54:22.660 Look, you don't want to be totally inept when it comes to preaching the gospel because you 54:22.660 --> 54:24.860 could be saved and just be a bad soul winner. 54:24.860 --> 54:25.860 Let's just be honest. 54:25.860 --> 54:26.860 Here's how you're going to get better though. 54:26.860 --> 54:27.860 Go soul winning. 54:27.860 --> 54:29.180 You're never going to get better unless you do it. 54:29.180 --> 54:30.180 It's like learning a second language. 54:30.180 --> 54:34.480 You're not going to learn that second language fully until you start speaking and immersing 54:34.480 --> 54:36.500 yourself in that language. 54:36.500 --> 54:39.980 But another thing, moving on to point two, right, is that it's clear. 54:39.980 --> 54:41.420 First Corinthians 14, look at verse six. 54:41.420 --> 54:45.820 The Bible says, now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit 54:45.820 --> 54:50.500 you except I shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying, 54:50.500 --> 54:55.180 right, preaching or by doctrine and even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or 54:55.180 --> 55:00.500 harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped 55:00.500 --> 55:01.500 or harped? 55:01.500 --> 55:06.100 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 55:06.100 --> 55:11.940 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood. 55:11.940 --> 55:14.020 How shall it be known what is spoken? 55:14.020 --> 55:16.900 For ye shall speak into the air. 55:16.900 --> 55:26.060 You know, Paul here in chapter 14, he gives this example, he's drawing this parallel between 55:26.060 --> 55:31.580 kind of explaining things in a convoluted way to speaking with tongues. 55:31.580 --> 55:34.060 Now this is not obviously the Pentecostal Charismatic. 55:34.380 --> 55:37.180 I shouldn't say obviously because there's a lot of people that get this wrong. 55:37.180 --> 55:39.980 This is not talking about some angelic language. 55:39.980 --> 55:44.700 When the Bible talks about speaking with tongues or speaking in another tongue, it's talking 55:44.700 --> 55:47.460 about other languages. 55:47.460 --> 55:51.300 I speak a little bit of Japanese, right? 55:51.300 --> 55:55.020 It's a language that I just personally like that I've studied on my own. 55:55.020 --> 55:58.800 There would be no point in me getting up and trying to preach anything or saying anything 55:58.800 --> 56:02.300 to you in Japanese because you wouldn't understand it. 56:02.300 --> 56:05.340 That's what Paul's getting across here is like, hey, if I came to you speaking with 56:05.340 --> 56:11.060 tongues, if I came speaking like another language, what's it really going to profit you guys 56:11.060 --> 56:15.060 unless by revelation or knowledge or prophesying or doctrine? 56:15.060 --> 56:19.700 Unless these things are somehow making it across to you, you have someone translating, right? 56:19.700 --> 56:22.940 Like you're preaching in English but someone's translating it into that other language. 56:22.940 --> 56:26.860 Sure that's profitable, but it's not profitable for me to get up here and preach in a language 56:26.860 --> 56:28.380 that you don't understand. 56:28.380 --> 56:29.580 We all understand that. 56:29.940 --> 56:36.060 That's what Paul's drawing this parallel to though of talking in a way in verse 9, uttering 56:36.060 --> 56:39.500 by the tongue words easy to be understood. 56:39.500 --> 56:44.900 When you preach the gospel, a way to be an effective soul winner is to make your presentation 56:44.900 --> 56:47.340 very clear. 56:47.340 --> 56:51.380 Here's a couple ways to do that practically that I see and it's the kids that do this 56:51.380 --> 56:56.260 and I'm not against the kids doing this because they're at least going soul winning more than 56:56.260 --> 57:02.180 some adults I know, but I am against just staying here where it's like, I think there's 57:02.180 --> 57:04.500 a card here just so that we get the full effect. 57:04.500 --> 57:07.500 It's like here's how kids do it and I see adults do this too. 57:07.500 --> 57:09.860 Hey, we're thinking about going to church and finding people to church. 57:09.860 --> 57:11.700 Do you go to church anywhere?
